This page includes templates and examples of citations for sources frequently used for New Zealand genealogical research. This is not an official Wikitree page, I have simply added my personal source templates to this page in case they are of use to others.
They are based on the Evidence Explained citation style. They are far from perfect, but the aim is to clearly identify the source of the information by answering the key questions who, what, where, when and wherein.
For sources behind paywalls, the template aims to incorporate as much genealogically-relevant material as practicable.

Birth
Civil Registration Image
Notes
- This citation is for digital images of original entries in the NZ Government Civil Registration registers
- It can also be used for certificates by replacing "birth registration" with "birth certificate"
- While not essential, the second layer of the citation provides a reference to the index entry which enables the document to be ordered (for a fee). The registration number is not shown on the actual image, as they were created as part of the digitisation of the records in the early 2000s
Template

Civil Registration Index - BDM Online
Notes
- This is the current, official NZ Government index, from which images of registration events can be ordered
- The index was created afresh in the early 2000s (ie it is not just a digital version of the existing microfiche indexes)
- The index is also available on FamilySearch in the New Zealand, Civil Records Indexes, 1800-1966 database. FamilySearch has a more flexible search engine, so can be useful to search if the desired record cannot be found using the Births, Deaths & Marriages Online website
- While the exact date of the event is not provided in the index, it can be confirmed (if already known) by narrowing the "Search From Date:" and "Search To Date:" to only include the date of the event. If the exact date is not known, it can be determined by gradually narrowing the date parameters until only a single date remains
