General Discussion Notes
- The Linger Family History book makes too many assumptions about the start of the Linger Family in America. None are proven with sources. This book, for the beginning roots of this family, should be taken with a grain of salt.
- Why the Middle Name of Dahl
- Did the Lingers come from Germany? There is not evidence of this. Some DNA Ethnicities point to France, possibly England. Although those are not accurate they do provide clues. Craig-4574 18:43, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Do we care that the family story is he came to American in a barrel? Craig-4574 18:43, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Where is the mysterious brother, Thomas? Craig-4574 18:43, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Was his LNAB Lincker as this unresearched comment suggests? Craig-4574 01:49, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Was his LNAB Lingerman? And to the Lingerman's of Pennsylvania as this unresearched comment suggests??Craig-4574 01:49, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- He is not related to Nicholas Lingerman of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Craig-4574 19:13, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- No connection can be found to Conrad Lingerman of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His line was not prolific and Wife's LNAB is unknown. Craig-4574 19:13, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
Myths
Myth One
Where did the middle name Dahl Come from?
Proof or Disprove
- The Linger Family History Linger, Fred J, and Hartzel G. Strader. Baltimore, Maryland. The University of Georgia Press. 1989.
- Recommendation: Remove Dahl as there is zero proof. Removed Craig-4574 21:23, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
Myth Two
From the Original Biography:
- In 1776, at the age 13, [citation needed]. Nicholas was captured by Continental Army in Trenton, New Jersey. At that time, he was given the choice to remain a prisoner or fight for the American side. He chose the American side. Dec 25 1776
- The story goes that Joseph hid in a barrel on a ship from Europe to the United States. His older brother, Thomas Linger, was on the same ship and reportedly a Hessian soldier paid to fight in the American Revolution.
- Not only is there no proof of this sailing but very little is known about Thomas. The story of being hidden for an entire voyage is highly suspect.
Prove or Disprove
- There is ZERO proof of Nicholas being born in Hesse. Everyone that has this on Ancestry and Family Search has not even tried to source it. A tombstone erected in the 1990's stating born in Hesse, Germany. This appears to be another situation of a family line wanting their ancestors to be from a location without even trying to source it.
- The birth location came from the Linger Family Book which even states THEY DO NOT KNOW where Nicholas came from. And the barrel story is 100% UNSOURCED FICTION.
- Running away from the angry father? Why is William, the father listed as dying in the same County in Virginia as Nicholas if he was running away from him?
- Most, likely, the Lingers came from Hesse, France. Nicholas didn't arrive to America in a barrel. It is comical that a tombstone was erected based on zero sources.
- Want more proof? Try looking at DNA for proof of France Craig-4574 18:42, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- Recommendations:
- DNA test more with Big Y
- Remove these silly unsourced stories from the profile. Leave them here on this Sandbox for reference. Added a colored box stating that the researchers could find zero proof/sources for the barrel boy story and have removed it. Craig-4574 19:35, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
Disputed Parents
- See this comment thread for full details.
- While "a" William might be the father of Nicholas and Thomas, based on DNA and scarce sources, it is becoming evident that what you questioned about origins in Germany and birth date is correct to question. This William is either a separate person or has 100% folklore stories from the inaccurate The Linger Family History book as well as the Hacker's Creek "Don Norman files".
- By the way, those Don Norman files are based on one sheet piece of paper filled with names provided by the family. The family filled out the Linger sheet based on the completely unsourced origin story of William and his sons, Thomas and barrel boy Nicholas.... from the inaccurate and Unsourced book.
- DNA from family members is pointing to French orgins and not Germanic Germany/Switzerland which means: not Palatine.
- Proof of parents is still needed: Wilhelm Linger and Hester Catharine (LaPlante) Linger. Craig-4574 20:17, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
- The unsourced Linger Family History Book places Wilhelm Linger and Hester Catharine (LaPlante) Linger in current day Slainsville, West Virginia. This location is far from where Nicholas and Catherine settled in Hardy, now Lewis, County, West Virginia. It would be odd for the family to not stay together. Do we know the BMD dates for Wilhelm and Hester? Could this be a separate family or even a brother of Nicholas? Is Thomas Linger even a brother of Nicholas... or at this point even a real person?
- Research Notes will also show that William Linger/Linegar has been confused with another William Linger.
- Recommendation: Remove Wilhelm Linger and Hester Catharine (LaPlante) Linger as parents. Keep them referenced on this Sandbox for reference. detached parents Craig-4574 19:47, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Much has been asserted as fact for Nicholas Linger with out any substantiated proof. Unfortunately, many on other genealogical websites have followed "hints" without investigating and searching for actual sources. Below, in the Research Notes, actual research has occurred to find any proof of this family line being from Germany. Based on some DNA tests and early records from Virginia, now West Virginia, there is no evidence that he arrived from Germany.
The researchers for Nicholas Linger do not believe in the barrel boy story that is a part of family history/lore per the Linger Family History book. It is unsourced along with his parents being William and Hester Linger and his birth location of Hesse, Germany. DNA of descendents now points to non Germany locations. Please see Myths and also the Fiction section of the Sandbox for the complete "barrel boy" story as it has been removed from this profile. |
Proof of parents is still needed: There is no evidence of Wilhelm Linger and Hester Catharine (LaPlante) Linger being the parents of Nicholas. Currently, Wilhelm is managed by the Palatine Project. Of note, there is zero evidence that this Nicholas was a Palatine because his birth location and language can not be determined. Another reason his parents should be detached.
The Middle Name of "Dahl" has been removed. See Research Notes for additional information.
The Birth Location of Hesse, Heiliges Römisches Reich. Many research notes below document why this is probably inaccurate.
Following a simple DNA question of "where do the Lingers come from" led researchers to believe that this Linger family line probably did not come from Germany but rather outside of Germany with possibilities such as Hesse, Moselle or even England. While this still remains a speculation, more male family members are required to DNA test for further proof.
So, what do we know about Nicholas?
We know that he did marry Margaret (McNemar) Linger and is believed to have had nine children. This is the start of the Virginia and now West Virginia Linger Family lines, primarily, in Lewis and Upshur Counties and historically in Hampshire and Hardy Counties. We also know that his estate was appraised in 1819 following his death.
Marriage
Wife: Margaret Peggy Mcnemar ( 1764 - 1827) in Hampshire, Virginia, USA . He had 2 tithables, 3 horses and paying 36 cents tax. - 1811 Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia)

- Margaret Linger 1781 - 1835
- Mary Elizabeth Linger 1788 - 1860

- Sarah (Linger) Bonnett 1795
- Phillip Mcnemar Linger 1797 - 1877
- Joseph Linger 1798 - 1870
- William Linger 1803 - 1893
- Catherine (Linger) McDonald 1805

Middle Name
The Middle Name of "Dahl" has been removed. There are no sources to prove this name. It was not common to use a middle name, in Europe or early Virginia at the time of his birth. The Dahl name keeps showing up in other genealogical applications so the name keeps getting used over and over. As a commenter mentioned, it could be that the Dahl is getting confused with his grandson, John Dolly Linger whose middle name is his mother's maiden name.
Lingerman and Linkers
As suggested in a comment, could this Nicholas Linger be connected to the Lingermans and Linkers of Pennsylvania?
- Does not appear to be linked to Conrad Lingerman, as per suggestion in a comment. Conrad Lingerman arrived in American much later than Nicholas. Nicholas was already established in Hardy County, Virginia (now, Lewis County, West Virginia).
- Does not appear to be linked to John F Linker, as per suggestion in a comment for the same reason as Conrad Lingerman: Nicholas Linger was already established on these shores. But, this John Linker did arrive from Hesse, Germany and could be part of the confusion, and assumption, that this Nicholas Linger was from Hesse, Germany. Nicholas from Hesse, Germany has been proven as false.
Birth
Frankfurt
FamilySearch used to claim he was born in 1761 Frankfurt, Hesse.
Christine Hühn checked the birth registers and didn't find neither a Nikolaus nor a Thomas Linger or similar.
Mainz
Meanwhile the FamilySearch profile of Nicholas states that he was baptized on 2 September 1765 in the Catholic church of Sankt Quintin in Mainz, Hesse.
The index cards based on the church books state that on said day there was the baptism of a Johann Nicolaus Länger, son of Sebastian Länger and Elisabeth. Godfather was Nikolaus Länger.[4]
Erksdorf
Evelyn Linger Thorn assumes, he was from Erksdorf.[3] According to Christine Hühn Erksdorf belonged to the Protestant parish of Speckswinkel at that time. The church book at Archion contains a lot of records with the surname Lincker, but lacks a Thomas around 1748 as well as a Nicolaus between 1748 and 1757. The marriage book also doesn't contain matching parents before 1748.
LAGIS knows about some Hessian soldiers from Erksdorf and other places.
Parents
It is assumed, because of an unsourced family history, he was son of William Linger and Hester LaPlante.[citation needed]
Note from Christine Hühn : LaPlante is not really a German name.
Further Research
Going through the various county record books (court, etc.) as the area changed over time, I discovered this: 17 Feb 1816 Surveyors of Roads, page 109[5] Written out text on page 109 is found at this link:[6]
He is also found in Hardy County in 1791, District of Heath (before it became other counties over time), with actually 60 Acres in the Taxes. Appears year after year as 60 Acres. Found him in the taxes up to 1799 in Hardy with 60 acres. [7][8]
1786 and up to 1790 he is found in the taxes with no taxables or land, Seymore area of Hardy.[9][10]
I later discovered a handy index of people, each year, Taxes, in Hardy may be found here:[11]
Land Indenture between John Harress of Hardy (the oddly formed "f" is an s when you have two) and his wife Judy and Nicholas "Lingerman" no wife mentioned, 55 pounds current money of Virginia, Land Deed Volume 2 Page 52, April 12, 1790, acknowledges release agreed to Lingerman ? and his Heirs, 60 Acres , being a part of a larger tract of one hundred and seven acres granted to John by Patent. Begins at the Chesnut Oak corner ?Philip? Mcelemars land, line..... x oak.... black oak ... etc. All houses, buidings, yards garden, orchard woods to the water course, 60 Acres again repeated at end, to Nicholas Lingerman (that surname is used throughout). This would be really neat to fully transcribe into Nicholas' profile exactly as written, the full contents. 60 Acres is highlighted above, as it disagrees with the Linger book, there are a number of issues in the book...[12]
Received the day of April 1790, of within named Nicolas Lingerman, 50 pounds, page 55....At a court held the 12th day of April 1790.[13]
This Indenture 7th day of October 1802 between Nicholas Linger of Hardy County and Margaret his wife (take notice she is now mentioned) of one part to Christopher Martin of the same place, 200 pounds, a parcel of land, 60 acres, by Patent of John Harris by bargain of sale bearing the date of 12 April 1790. Beginning at a Chesnut Oak corner to Philip Macnamar running with his own line 872E130 poles...same buildings, gardens, orchards...to have and hold ...his heirs. At a Court held for Hardy County 13th day of Oct 1802. So the "first" land passed from the Linger family at this point and became Martin Land in 1802.[14]
See written vertically from bottom to top, middle by book seam, the final delivery (I assume all was satisfied at that point), "deliv-- to Ch. Martin 5 Oct 1803. Physically on page 147.[15]

41 Acres, Nicholas Linger and wife Margaret, on 22 day of May 1819 record an indenture to their son Nicholas Jr, whom paid 50 dollars granted bargain, lying on Stonecoal, a branch of the West Fork? river, being part of the survey of Sringer? and the end of said survey where Nicholas Jr now lives. At the end they both enter their Mark, X. Much more in the record, I picked out key things.[19] Appears again, looks like it was entered again 31st Mar 1838[20]
Nicholas Linger's Estate, deceased, taken on 23 Dec 1819. Appraisers George Bush, George Witzel?, Abner Abbot. Sworn before Jas Allen?. At a Court hed for the County of Lewis Feb Term 1820...This inventory of the appraisement of the Estate of Nicolas Linger deceased was returned to the Court by the Administrators there of and ordered to be Recorded. Test: D.Stringer. (see following pages after the first image)[21]
This census record is likely him (with one of his children's family living with him), unless that is his son with his parents are living with them. But Jr wasn't married yet, nor had kids? In the 1810 Census Nicholas was in Harrison, Virginia, United States.[22]
1820 Census is likely his son Nicholas Jr, as no male over 25, and he is deceased at this time.
I'd recommend a basic research of records in each of the counties (beyond this quick bombing run through the records I've added to Further Reseach section so he at least has some legit primary references), Taxes, Court, Land, etc. that this area became over time, during his lifetime, appears to be **so** much to find! It was really neat to find so darned much unfound stuff in just an evening while multitasking! Sometimes you will find them in someone else's Will, Executor, in Probate as witness or other people's Estate inventories, so on and etc. I tend to find the most important stuff in the non-indexed records, aka Search, Images, then entering the places for the records, at Family Search.

Fiction
In 1776, at the age 13, [citation needed]. Nicholas was captured by Continental Army in Trenton, New Jersey. At that time, he was given the choice to remain a prisoner or fight for the American side. He chose the American side. [26] Dec 25 1776
Arrival in US
[citation needed] It was stated in a family history book without any sources. With today's sources, this story has been determined to be complete fiction.
There are many stories as to how Nicholas arrived in the US, but the one we feel is nearer true follows. We believe that Nicholas had a brother, Thomas Linger. They may have been born in Erksdorf, Germany and surname may have been Lincker. Thomas was in the Hessian Army during the American Revolution, and Nicholas may have been a drummer in his regiment, however their are no documents to prove this. Some stories have Nicholas as a stowaway on the troop ship that his brother served on in 1776. It appears that both Nicholas and his brother were trying to get away from the stern laws of the German government and a very stern father. His brother may have served in the Revolutionary War in the 9th Virginia Regiment of continental Army, under Capt. John Blair and Capt. John Paulson about 12/1776. Laying aside family tradition we find that there were Linger and McNemar families in the Mifflin and York County area of Pennsylvania in the 1700's, but no proof linking them with Nicholas and Margaret McNemar Linger has been found. It is believed that Nicholas father was a hat maker.[3]
- [citation needed]Story has it that Nicholas was hidden in a barrel on a ship coming to America by either the captain or his brother, Thomas, who was bought from his parents to fight in the Revolution war.[citation needed]...His brother may have served in the Revolutionary War in the 9th Virginia Regiment of continental Army, under Capt. John Blair and Capt. John Paulson about 12/1776 as stated on Find a Grave
Birth
Godfather was Nikolaus Länger.[27]
Parents
It is assumed he was son of William Linger and Hester LaPlante.[citation needed]
Note from Christine Hühn : LaPlante is not really a German name.
Further Research
Going through the various county record books (court, etc.) as the area changed over time, I discovered this: 17 Feb 1816 Surveyors of Roads, page 109[28] Written out text on page 109 is found at this link:[29]
He is also found in Hardy County in 1791, District of Heath (before it became other counties over time), with actually 60 Acres in the Taxes. Appears year after year as 60 Acres. Found him in the taxes up to 1799 in Hardy with 60 acres. [30][31]
1786 and up to 1790 he is found in the taxes with no taxables or land, Seymore area of Hardy.[32][33]
I later discovered a handy index of people, each year, Taxes, in Hardy may be found here:[34]
Land Indenture between John Harress of Hardy (the oddly formed "f" is an s when you have two) and his wife Judy and Nicholas "Lingerman" no wife mentioned, 55 pounds current money of Virginia, Land Deed Volume 2 Page 52, April 12, 1790, acknowledges release agreed to Lingerman ? and his Heirs, 60 Acres , being a part of a larger tract of one hundred and seven acres granted to John by Patent. 60 Acres is highlighted above, as it disagrees with the Linger book, there are a number of issues in the book...[35]
Received the day of April 1790, of within named Nicolas Lingerman, 50 pounds, page 55....At a court held the 12th day of April 1790.[36]
So the "first" land passed from the Linger family at this point and became Martin Land in 1802.[37]
See written vertically from bottom to top, middle by book seam, the final delivery (I assume all was satisfied at that point), "deliv-- to Ch. Martin 5 Oct 1803. Physically on page 147.[38]

Much more in the record, I picked out key things.[42] Appears again, looks like it was entered again 31st Mar 1838[43]
(see following pages after the first image)[44]
This census record is likely him (with one of his children's family living with him), unless that is his son with his parents are living with them. But Jr wasn't married yet, nor had kids? In the 1810 Census Nicholas was in Harrison, Virginia, United States.[45]
