Family lore says 3 sons came from Germany as mercenaries to fight in Washington's Continental Army, went AWOL and then married into the Dutch in upstate NY. That makes sense for a deserter since NY was Dutch and an escape from being on the wrong side of politics or otherwise fleeing Colonial America. But no info on this. The marriage to Olla does seem to indicate that she was Dutch, as the children are recorded in a Dutch church. Could Nicholas have been Dutch? |
