This is the companion space page for the category. It can be used to collect and collate research notes from profiles in the category. (For example, Buie research is getting out of hand - it can be collected here and, if warranted, can be used as the basis for a non-personal space page.)

See for example the research notes on Daniel Buie (abt.1760-1805).

The notes were the result of trying to resolve two sons named Duncan attached to the profile of Duncan who left an 1819 will:

  • Dad Duncan Buie (abt.1726-1819): Duncan Buie of Cumberland County wrote his will on 15 May 1819, naming sons Daniel (deceased), Duncan and John (executors). Witnesses were John McRae [sen?] and James Watson.[1]
Profiles attached as sons:

Looking for the witness John McRae, I found John McRae (1778-1824), who was the son of Margaret (McDuffie) McRae (-1845), but was born/died in Mississippi. His father was Daniel, but Daniel - who was born in Scotland - was the son of John McRae, and his profile cites as source "Notes Transcribed from Family Bible of Elizabeth McRae, MSGenWeb Special Projects. Submitted originally by Linda Mason. Retrieved July 22, 2022"

Research Notes

From text of duplicate profile, Buie-107:

His will was signed and sealed on Nov. 21, 1822 and proved in the June term of court and ordered to be recorded in Book B, page 105. The witnesses were: John McLeod, Norman McDonald and John Patterson Jr. Cumberland county was made out of Bladen county so this is in the Cumberland county wills.

John Patterson is probably his son-in-law, who is named in the will but not as a legatee.[3]

His wife is assumed to have died before he wrote his will, as he does not mention her. He names six sons and four daughters in his will. WikiTree profiles for his children/grandchildren as of 22 July 2023:

Duncan Brown-153870

In the 1850 census, Duncan Brown was a neighbor of Jane Patterson in Alabama.[8]

Buies of Robeson County, North Carolina

From Duncan Brown (1797-1880), 22 January 2023 -

See Buie-469#Buie_Family_History - I'm not sure that the Duncan Buie who died in Cumberland County in 183[5] at age 86 is lineally a member of the Buies of Robeson County. However, this Duncan Brown is covered in one of the letters written by cousins in the early 1900s attempting to document their family. The following is from a letter written in 1907, providing information on the children of "William Brown who married Mary Campbell":[9]

  • Mary - called Polly - married Archibald Brown moved to Mifs [Mississippi]
  • Katie Brown - married Neill Buie - moved to Mifs
  • Rebecca Brown - married - Matthew Smylie -moved to Mifs
  • Lovedy Brown - married - John McCallum - N.C.
  • Rev Joseph Brown - married - 1st Eliza Graham in S.C. 9 children
  • Rev Joseph Brown 2nd marrying to Amanda Patterson of Ala
  • Duncan Brown - married Sallie Ann Buie in N.C.
  • Janne Brown - married - John Smith who died & several children
  • Jane Browns 2nd marriage - to Malcome Patterson -N.C.
  • Susan Brown - married - married Daniel Smith N.C.
  • William Brown - married - Annie Graham - Ala
  • Annie Brown - died young

The Aunt Jane Patterson mentioned in the Research Notes of Duncan Buie's profiles is the Jane Brown who married (2) Malcome Patterson.

Daniel Buie-438

As of 22 January 2023, the profile for Daniel Buie (abt.1760-1805) includes a "McDuffie Connection" in its Research Notes.

Biography

Daniel Buie was born about 1760 in Cumberland County, North Carolina. He married Mary Margaret McDuffie, a daughter of Archibald McDuffie.[10]

Their son Duncan was born about 1797 and married Rebecca Atkinson.[10]

Research Notes

Which Daniel this is needs additional sources, so the Unsourced template was not removed during this edit. The DAR descendant record used to support the narrative above (as of 22 January 2023) is good for leads but only the main records have been vetted - that Daniel married Archibald McDuffie's daughter Mary Margaret is part of the main record for Archibald.[10]

Daniel Buie was the son of Duncan Buie.[citation needed]
Daniel died in 1805 in Fayetteville, Cumberland County.[citation needed]
... or after March 1811, in Cumberland County.[10]

The will of Duncan Buie of Cumberland County, North Carolina, written 15 May 1819, named three of his sons - Daniel (deceased), Duncan and John (executors). Witnesses to the will were John McRae [sen?] and James Watson.[3]

The Daniel who died before his father - Duncan Buie of Cumberland County - had children who were left bequests by Duncan in his 1819 will. Unfortunately, they were not named.[3]

McDuffie Connection:

  • The DAR descendant record has this Daniel married to Mary Margaret McDuffie.[10]
  • The profile attached as his brother John Buie is attached as husband to Flora McDuffie.
  • One of the witnesses to the 1819 will of Duncan Buie is John McRae. A search of possible profiles for this John McRae discovered one whose mother was a Margaret McDuffie (born in Scotland, died in Mississippi in 1845; married Daniel McRae 6 December 1779) - but although he would have been of age in 1819, he was born in Mississippi. Perhaps his grandfather John? From notes made by Elizabeth Mary McBae of Pascagoula, Jackson County, Mississippi in her family Bible:

John McRae the head of our family, was b. in N.C. 15 Feb, 1778. His parents were John and Margaret McRae. (He had no brothers that we know of. One sister, Mrs. McQueen, lived in Ala.)

Elizabeth Mary McRae w/o said John McRae, was b. 6 Sept, 1792. She was the d/o Daniel McRae and Margaret McDuffie, who were married 6 Dec, 1779.

Daniel McRae was the s/o John McRae and Elizabeth McKenzie, both of whom were from the highlands of Scotland.

John McRae and Elizabeth Mary McRae were married in Anson Co., N.C. 22 Nov, 1809 by Rev. T. Woods. John McRae d. at West Pascagoula, Ms. 14 Mar, 1835.[11]

John Buie and Flora McDuffie's daughter Mary married Duncan Patterson in Fayetteville, Cumberland, North Carolina on 28 Nov 1808.[12]

Elizabeth notes in her bible that "Margaret McDuffie was the d/o John McDuffie and Mary Pattison who also came from Scotland."[11] Duncan Patterson may have been a descendant of that Pattison family.

Duncan Buie-469

As of 22 January 2023, the profile for Duncan Buie (1748-1835) includes a "Buie Family History" section in its Research Notes.

Biography

Duncan was born about 1748 (he was 86 when he died on 20 January 183[5?]).[13]

He was the son of Duncan Buie.[citation needed]

Research Notes

Which Duncan with a tombstone in Cumberland County, North Carolina cannot be determined based solely on the tombstone inscription. The text of the memorial with additional information is unsourced.

From the tombstone image attached to the Find a Grave memorial for Duncan Buie born 1748:[13]

To the Memory of Duncan Buie a native of Argyle Shire, Scotland who died January 20th 183[3?5?] Aged 86 Years

The text of the memorial (as of 22 January 2023):

Parents: Duncan Buie, Birth 1724 in Jura, Argyll, Scotland; Death 10 Oct 1819 in Fayetteville, Cumberland, North Carolina, United States
Birth: 1730 in North Carolina, United States; Death 1800 in Buies Creek, Moore, North Carolina, United States
is this possibly information about an unnamed mother?
Wife: Sarah Susanna, Birth 1760 in Argyll, Scotland; Death 11 Nov 1836 in Cumberland, Cumberland, North Carolina, United States[14]
Inscription: Age 86 Native of Argyle Shire Scotland.

Unsupported text previously given as the biography for this profile was apparently copied from the Find a Grave memorial. Sources listed for the profile (prior to 22 January 2023) were the Find a Grave memorial[13] and http://www.capefearclans.com/BuieHistory.html - a Buie family history written by Flora McInnis Buie who died in 1910.[15]

Buie Family History

To try to see how (or if) this Duncan (died c1835) figures into the history written prior to 1910 by Mrs. Flora McInnis Buie, the following information from that history has been abstracted:[15]

  • Flora (McInnis) Buie (died 1910) married Archibald Buie, son of Daniel Buie and Flora McPherson
    • Children of Flora (McInnis) and Archibald Biue were "Duncan Alexander and Daniel Calvin twin brothers, Cartharine [sic] Jane, John Malloy, Annabella, Mary Malvuid, Malcolm Bunyan, Neill Archibald, Effie, Rebecca Downey. Duncan Alexander married Kate McGeachy. His p.o. address, Lumberton, N.C. Catherine Jane, Address Buie, N.C."
    • Daniel Calvin Buie "married Susan Salmon. Their childern [sic] are Malcolm Archibald, Almira Lee, Flora Lillian, Walter (died) John Oakley, Susan (died). Daniel Buie, P.O. adress Lumberton, N.C."
  • Archibald Buie, who married Flora McInnis (died 1910) was the son of "Daniel Buie son of Malcolm Buie married Flora McPherson [daughter of Daniel and Marian McNeill McPherson]. Their childern [sic] were Malcolm Buie, Sallie Ann, Archibald, Mary, Rebecca, Effie, Neill, Daniel McPherson, John, Annabel."
This translates to Flora McInnis's husband Archibald Buie being the grandson of Malcolm Buie and Flora McPherson, by their son Daniel Buie.
Malcolm and Flora also had a daughter, Mary, who married Neil McCorvey:
  • "Neil McCorvey married Mary Buie daughter of Daniel Buie [and Flora McPherson]. Their childern were Daniel Buie, Taylor, Catherine, Caroline, Laura."
  • Laura is linked to another page, which transcribes a letter that she wrote to her mother in 1854 from Union Church, Mississippi [in Jefferson County].[16] The following is excerpted from that 1854 letter:
    • "Uncle Peter is quite frail but rides about a little in the neighborhood / Uncle Charles McDougald is in tollerable health his age considered – aunt Caty was here just now is well / John Ray is also well / Uncle C & Aunt Caty and John Ray are anxious to sell and be off to Ark – I heard from Ark a few days ago all are tollerable well / Neill McCorvey [husband of Mary Buie McCorvey who was daughter of Daniel Buie Flora McPherson; Neill was son of Finlah McCorvey and Annabel "Nepsy" Buie of Robeson Co., NC who lived on what became the J.F. McKay land on the south side of Panther Branch in Philadelphus, Robeson Co. south of Red Springs.] & Catharine [dau. of Neill McCorvey; Catherine McCorvey married Daniel Galbraith] are better of the Palsey / Mary has a fine a Daughter and name enough Flora Laura Jane [Is this Laura McCorvey who married Daniel Wilkerson?] / I recon they think it the last / D. Brown has bought land in 9 miles of them and stock / they say he got a great Bargain good dwellings and out houses of all kind / 300 hundred acres under fence for 1200$ [end of page]

"He has been to texas since he bought with Newton and Dr. Buie his – nephews – he likes texas very well / they have bought land there / he (Duncan) did not / it is uncertain whether they will move or not if they go he may..."
I think the parenthetical Duncan may be referring to "D. Brown"? ~ Noland-165, 22 January 2023 (other annotations were made to the copy posted)
Just adopted a profile for John Buie (22 July 2023) that has his death in Union Church, Mississippi and added research notes with info from multiple John Buies. See John Buie Sr. (1751-1831). Other tabs/window open...
  • The page with the 1854 letter includes a 1907 letter with a lot of genealogical information, such as
    • Katie Brown - married Neill Buie - moved to Mifs
    • Duncan Brown - married Sallie Ann Buie in N.C.
The information will require some study to figure it out. The Katie who married Neill Buie is apparently the Katie listed as a daughter of William Brown, who was a son of Hugh Brown and Mary Buie. I haven't figured out the parents given in the letter for Duncan Brown who married Sallie Ann Buie, but they have WikiTree profiles, as do Hugh and Mary:

Location Notes

Robeson County (which borders South Carolina), Cumberland County & Bladen County are co-located, while the southwest point of Moore County (to the north) appears to touch the northwest corner of Cumberland County (see the maps on their Wikipedia pages).[18]

Bath County (1696-1739) was a Historical County in North Carolina. The city of Bath still remains. It was renamed Craven County.[19] "Craven County was organized by English colonists and named for William, Earl of Craven, who lived from 1606-1697. The county was created from the now-extinct Bath County in 1712." Craven County today does not border on the counties just mentioned. It borders Beaufort County (NE), Pamlico County (E), Carteret County (SE), Jones County (SW), Lenoir County (W), and Pitt County (NW).[20]

Bladen County was formed in 1734 as Bladen Precinct of Bath County, from New Hanover Precinct.[21]

Cumberland County was formed in 1754 from Bladen County, North Carolina.[22]

Moore County was formed in 1784 from Cumberland County. [23]

Robeson County was formed in in 1787 from part of Bladen County.[24]

Malcolm McNeill-2779

Malcolm McNeill (abt.1780-), son of Hector "the Sailor" McNeill, was guardian of Daniel Buie's heirs, Isabella & Margaret. From his profile:

Biography

Malcolm McNeill was the son of Hector "the Sailor" McNeill of Robeson County, North Carolina, who wrote his will on 20 December 1803.[25]

Abstract of Will dated 20 December 1803, presented in Robeson County court on 2 April 1804 for probate "by the men Hector named as his executors" (son Malcolm McNeill and son-in-law Daniel Buie).[25]
Witnesses: Neill Buie and Daniel Buie
Hector, Neill Buie, and Daniel Buie all signed with their mark

Research Notes

Estimated Birth: About 1780 - he had to be at least 21, since he was named an executor of his father's will, written in 1803.[25]

Wife: As shown in Hector's entry in the Cape Fear Clans website: Malcolm Culbreth McNeill (c.1785-1839) married Ruth Fitzrandolph. Hector's entry also shows that his daughter Isabella (c. 1775-Dec 1839) married Daniel Buie (died c.1831 in Robeson Co. leaving widow & children including two daughters, Isabella and Margaret Buie).[26]

Malcolm Culbreth McNeill (c.1785-1839), married Ruth Fitzrandolph

McRae Connection: An 1814 land transaction: Malcolm McNeill to McRee, two tracts previously grants to "Hector McNeill saler" near Bear Swamp on Mossey Neck Branch in Robeson Co., NC. (from Hector's entry - links to 1814, which includes details; e.g., "James McRee, 6 July 1814, Robeson County").[26]

Sampson A. Martin (1824-aft.1880)
  • managed by me but not a relative
  • the two were conflated; I need to stay manager of both. Non-relative has lots of profiles that could be created (mine 0): Mildred's FS PID has links to census records for her family with Samuel McCrary (1880, 1900,1910).[27]
Peter Jones (abt.1760-aft.1811) - father of Tennessee Gov. James C. Jones
  • I manage the son's profile
  • 1811 will names siblings of the governor who do not have profiles
Sarah Watson (Munford) Jones (1815-) - wife of Tennessee Gov. James C. Jones
  • orphaned profile
  • see comments (unsourced info posted, saying her parents were William Munford & Lettice Ball, led to finding to an FS PID for Letitia/Lettie Ball, which had good sources, including record of marriage to William Mumford [whose PID did not have any source but that - also, no parents]). So - add a profile for her mother. If one for Dad is added, it will need to be managed by a project so that parents cannot be added without sources.

Need a challenge? Isaac Bledsoe's named on the Salt Makers page but he wasn't actually a salt maker (at least as far as I can tell).

EEK! The Bledsoes. See Space: Salt Makers... Isaac is probably...
