The second column shows the date that the state was admitted to the union (according to Wikipedia) or "17th Century" if the state had been a colony (regardless of when the colony was first settled). The WikiTree+ search looks for profiles in the category with a birth year in the datafield that fits the century, so there may be search results in a century prior to statehood. For example, someone born in 1793 (the 18th century) may have lived in West Virginia, which was admitted to the union in 1863 (the 19th century). In addition, some areas were recognized territories before being admitted as a state.
The 16th century is not listed. Although the earliest colonists were born in the 1500s, the westward spread of settlers into the area known today as Appalachia was undertaken by later generations.
