Green-Grigg Notes

update - looks like an oops, that someone replaced the profile of his mother with that for his aunt. Profile for his mother (Susannah Grigg) has been put back as his mother. ~ Noland-165, 10 August 2020

A recent edit brought to my attention that in WikiTree, Burwell Green is the son of siblings:

Burwell Green (aft. 1668-1733), Charles City County-Surry County. Parents:

Green Profiles

Green-15277: Lewis Green (abt. 1625), born Charles City County; father of Susannah and Lewis
  • Green-4376: Susannah Green (abt. 1645), Virginia; as of 9 August 2020, she is not attached to a husband, although her profile shows her as Susannah (Green) Grigg[1]
  • Green-15299: Lewis Green (abt. 1645-1730), Virginia; husband of Susannah Grigg

William Grigg, wife Susan/Susannah

More than one generation had a William Grigg with wife Susan/Susannah.
Susannah Green, daughter of Lewis Green, was born about 1645. She was "probably m. to William Grigg, son of William & Miss (Burwell) Grigg".[2][3] Her grandmother is said to possibly have been a Grigg (see Research Notes on her father's profile).
Susannah Lockett was born in 1671, died in 1727, and was named in her mother's and brother's wills, both broved 1708. Neither named her husband, but other records imply William (not clear which one). In WikiTree, Susannah Lockett is attached to William Grigg, son of William Grigg & Frances Burwell (the same William that Susannah Green is "probably" married to).
The will of Margaret Lockett, proved 1708, names daughter Susan Grigg, but does not name her husband. The will of James Lockett, also proved 1708, names his sister Susan Grigg.[4]
  • WILL - LOCKETT, Margaret - Will of Margaret Locket of Bristol Parish, dated May 22, 1708, recorded July 1, 1708. To daughter Elizabeth Standley, items. To my sons, Benjamin and Thomas Locket, and to my daughters, Susan Grigg and Mary Mitchell, each one shilling. All the rest of estate to son, James Locket, and he to be sole executor. Witnesses were John Bolling and Mary Pucket. (Wills and Deeds 1706-1709, page 99, Henrico County, Virginia.)
  • WILL - LOCKETT, James - Will of James Lockett of Bristol Parish, dated December 4, 1708, recorded February 1, 1708. To brother, Thomas Lockett, my plantation and land. He is to make over within 6 months, 1/2 acre to John Bolling where Bolling's store stands. Also to Thomas, Livestock. To sisters, Susan Grigg and Mary Mitchell, each a cow. All the rest of estate to brother, Benjamin Lockett, and he to be executor. Witnesses were William Weathers, Susan Featherstone, and John Hall. (Wills and Deeds 1706-1709, page 135, Henrico County, Virginia.)
The 1726 will of William Grigg Jr. names sons Lewis Grigg, Burrell Grigg, and Jess Grigg, daughter, Susannah Grigg, father, William Grigg, mother, Susannah Grigg, and brother, James Grigg.[4]
  • WILL - GRIGG, William, Jr. - Will of William Grigg, Jr., dated April 22, 1726, and proved on September 13, 1726 at Court held at Fitzgerrald. To son, Abner Grigg, Plantation on mouth of Great Branch thence up to Edward Mitchells line. Devises to sons, Lewis Grigg, Burrell Grigg, and Jess Grigg, daughter, Susannah Grigg, father, William Grigg, mother, Susannah Grigg, and brother, James Grigg. Also devise to Thomas Hackney. (Deeds, etc. 1713-1728, page 924, Prince George County, Virginia.)

Father of William Grigg Jr. would be a good candidate for the husband of Susanna, daughter of Lewis I, except - Burwell descendants? Maybe 2nd wife of son William? (1st?) More details on two generations of kids & wives Burwell & Lockett needed. Still, I think, based on dates, that it's possible Susannah, daughter of Lewis I, was the 2nd wife of William Grigg after his wife Miss (Frances) Burwell died. In WikiTree, both Frances and William (b 1632, m Frances 1665) are shown with a death date of 1715.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=deloreswilley&id=I29774 has a daughter Susannah of William Grigg & Miss Burwell, but I think that's Susannah Green, 2nd wife. maybe.

and maybe not - dates for William Grigg immigrant has death between 1688 & 1704 Grigg genealogy

Generations

WikiTree:
  1. William Grigg (1632-1715) m Frances Burwell (1645-c1715)
  2. William Grigg (c1666-1726) m Susannah Lockett (c1671-c1727), daughter of Margaret (Osborne) Lockett (d 1708), sister of James Lockett (d 1708)
  3. William Grigg (abt. 1689-1726) m Elizabeth Mitchell, children Abner Grigg, Jesse Grigg, Burwell Grigg, Lewis Grigg and Susannah (Grigg) Featherstone - 1726 will names the children (although not "Featherstone"), parents William and Susannah Grigg, brother James Grigg.
  1. Lewis Green (abt. 1625)
  2. Lewis Green (abt. 1645-1730) note: improbable lifespan for the times m Susannah Grigg (1646-1709), brother of Susannah Green (said to have "probably" married William Grigg (the same one connected to Susannah Lockett in WikiTree), children Frances Green, Mary (Green) Eppes, Burwell Green, Peter Green Sr. and Susanna (Greene) Gilliam (only Frances & Burwell attached to Susannah Grigg, the rest are motherless - and there's a "Sarah Francis Green", daughter of Susannah Grigg attached to a second profile for a Green husband: John Lewis Green) .
    - note - text on profile says he married (1) "possibly a Miss Parham or Miss Grigg"; m (2) Susannah Grigg, b. 1668, "Baly’s Creek, Westopher Parish," Charles City county, the "daughter of William & Miss (Burwell) Grigg". List of children, which includes the following Lewis, says only child whose mother is known is Frances (born c1672), daughter of Susannah Grigg.
    1. son Burwell Green (aft. 1668-1733) m 1700 to Anne Poythress (bef. 1682-aft. 1733)
      1. Burwell's daughter: Sarah Green (c1712-1766) m Miles Thweatt (abt. 1703-abt. 1767)
  3. Lewis (no profile)... born 1680, married (1) Sarah _____, (2) Susanna _____, (3) Frances _____
A comment on the profile of Susannah Green, sister of Lewis Green (apparently when she was attached as wife of Lewis Green... she had been previously moved to be his sister) says:
  • My research shows that Susannah's maiden name was Grigg, daughter of William Grigg & Ellenor Unknown. She married John Lewis Green in 1669. She was the mother of Burwell Green and died about 1710 in Charles City, Colony of Virginia. Any comments? comment made in 2019... I saw it August 2020
Another, unrelated (I believe), Lewis Green: See Green-15299#Another Lewis Green.2C son of Robert Dunn Green

At least two generations of William Grigg (Jr & Sr), Lewis Jr, more:

From Green-15277

Copied 9 Auguste 2020 from the profile for Lewis Green, born about 1625:

Note: The line between this Lewis and Lewis Green Jr. (b May 5, 1751, married to Esther Kilgore) hits a snag at the father of that Lewis. Currently in WikiTree, Lewis Jr. b 1751 is connected as the son of Lewis Green Sr., b 1724 and Elizabeth Lauderdale. In Windows Into Our Past (#Smith), Lewis Green Sr. b 1724, m Lauderdale is son of a different line & Lewis Green Jr. b 1751, m Kilgore (styled Lewis Green V by Smith) is the son of Lewis Green b 1710 by his wife Sarah (unknown), who was the son of Lewis Green (b c1680, styled III by Smith) by his wife Sarah (unknown), who was also the mother of at least two other children by Lewis Green III: Burwell Green (b c1714) and Sarah Green (b c1712, m Miles Thweatt).[5] Lewis (b c1680) had a son Peter by (2) wife Frances[6] and Susanna by (3) wife Susanna.[6][7] Smith's conclusion is that Lewis Green b May 5, 1751 is the son of Lewis Green b 1710, who is a different person than Lewis Green b 1724, m Lauderdale. Information available appears to be open to interpretation that can support either Lewis Green as father.

Biography

Lewis Green, born in Charles City County, Virginia about 1625 or 1630, is surmised to be the son of William Green who was transported in 1620 and survived the 1622 massacre.[2][8]

"There were close ties between the Greens and the early Grigg, Gowers, and Parhams; it is "It is possible [emphasis in original] that the mother of Lewis Green I (wife of William Greene) was from one of these families."[9]

In 1660, Lewis "was awarded 100 lbs tobacco for a wolf head (at Merchants Hope Church in present-day Hopewell; the church was built in 1657)."[2]

His son was Lewis of High Peake (land purchase by son Lewis in 1702; he was owner of two mills, the first along the tributary, Easterly Run, which was later known as Manchester Creek, of Bayley’s/Bailies Creek that today forms "the dividing line between Prince George County and the present city of Hopewell").[2][10]
Lewis's daughter Susannah, born about 1645, was "probably m. to William Grigg, son of William & Miss (Burwell) Grigg".[2][11]

Vitals

Parents: no proof; "possibly had Lewis Green I, b ca. 1630, Prince George Co., VA"[12]
  • Father: best guess is William Greene, imported 1620 & living at Jordan's (now in Prince George County), Virginia in 1622[12]
  • Mother: maiden name possibly Grigg, Gower, or Parham - speculative at best that she may have been "from one of these families."[9]
Birth: no proof, except existence in court records in 1656[13] (presumed of age, so born before 1635) and 1659, Charles City county.[12]
  • Location: Charles City county based on location of (possible) father and no evidence of Lewis Green's importation[12]
  • Date: about 1625[14]
Wife: not named, date & place not found
Children:
  • Lewis Green[12]
  • Susannah Green, b. bef. 1645; probably m. to William Grigg, son of William & Miss (Burwell) Grigg.[15][16]
correction: Mary Green who married Edward Epes was daughter of the son of Lewis Green, also Lewis Green, and called "Sr." in his lifetime. He left "land to his daughter Mary who had married Edward Epes with the stipulation that it be passed on to her sons."[17]
Died: not known

1650s Records

Smith did not include a transcription of the 1656 mention,[13] and the following 1659 transcription states it is the "first mention." Both of the following transcriptions are from Smith's Windows Into Our Past.[12]
The first mention of a Lewis Greene is in the Dec 3, 1659 Court of Charles City County (from which Prince George County was formed in 1704), VA which reads: “Att a Co’rt holden Att Westo’er Dec. 3, 1659 Walter Brookes age 36 yeares or thereabouts exai’ed and sworne Saith – That Jarvis Hicks called to the Dept. and sayd there was a fellow agst whom there was a hue and cry issued, whereupon the Dept. put forth with his boat and Robert Ffarmer, the Dept. servant and pursued the fellow, who turned into a creeke whereupon the dept. called one Lewis Green, a neere neighbor to come with his cannon (canoe) to help apprehend a man who was disturbing the peace.18” [Note: the present Prince George County was formed in 1702 from part of Charles City County. The area of Ward’s Creek was 1) in part of Westover Parish that was on the south side of the James, 2) briefly a part of Jordan’s Parish, formed from the south side of Westover, 3) part of Westover again when Jordans and Westover reunited, and 4) part of Martin’s Brandon when that Parish was enlarged in 172019.]

Note

See a quick chart for William Green's family (descended from Robert Green of Culpepper). Research by Ardath Jo Green concluded that the family lines for Lewis Green of Prince George & Robert (of Culpepper) are different.
Citations for a lot of the information posted about William Green go to Appalachian Ancestors by Darlene (Mitchem) Dingess.
A son of that line, James Green, died 6 Oct 1851 in Harlan County, Kentucky. Of interest: A pension application[19] by Lewis Green (b 1751; enlisted in Russell County, Virginia) was filed in Harlan County, Kentucky (see next section).

In DAR (see next section for full citations).
Note: The DAR's public database includes Patriot Ancestors of DAR members. If a person is not listed by DAR, it does not mean the person did not serve or support the War for Independence; children of Patriot Ancestors (and their spouses) listed by DAR are those who are ancestors of DAR members. The list may not be complete (for children or for spouses).
Lewis Green Sr. (Patriot Ancestor #A047197), service: VA
b c1720s, died before August 6, 1785 in Washington County, Virginia
wife unknown
children:
  • Lewis Jr., m Esther Kilgore

DAR has corrections for the children listed, but corrections (if I followed them correctly) bring the children/spouses listed by DAR into agreement with Smith's listing of their 10 children (and spouses),[26] which includes Lewis Jr. and his wife Tabitha/Telitha "Letty" Arnett.

Patriot Ancestors

DAR has both Junior (Patriot Ancestor #A047198) and Senior (Patriot Ancestor #A047197), with a note that service previously attributed to Senior was actually that of Junior.

Locations

Jordan's (plantation, assumed); residence of (possible) father William Greene in 1622
"Jordan’s is now in Prince George County, which was formed in 1704 from the part of Charles City County situated on the south side of the James River."[12]
Wikipedia: Jordan Point
Merchant's Hope Church:
"The traditional date of the building's erection, 1657, is cut into one of the beams of the roof trusses. The church was built to serve as the parish church of Jordan's Parish, but became a chapel of ease of Westover Parish in 1688 and the upper chapel of Martin's Brandon Parish in 1720. Jordan's Parish was created by 1655 out of the western portion of Westover Parish that lay south of the James River. All of the parishes of Prince George County (except Bristol Parish) were united with Martin's Brandon Parish in 1720. Martin's Brandon Parish was a plantation parish in 1618 and its final establishment as a separate parish occurred in 1655."

Prince George County: the present Prince George County was formed in 1702 from part of Charles City County. The area of Ward’s Creek was 1) in part of Westover Parish that was on the south side of the James, 2) briefly a part of Jordan’s Parish, formed from the south side of Westover, 3) part of Westover again when Jordans and Westover reunited, and 4) part of Martin’s Brandon when that Parish was enlarged in 172019.[12]
When Bristol Parish was formed in 1643, it extended from the mouth of the Appomattox River (present day Hopewell), along both sides of the river indefinitely to the west. Other parishes, including Dale in Chesterfield County were later created out of Bristol.
Martins Brandon Parish when first created in the mid 1600’s extended from upper Chappokes Creek (now the eastern boundry of Prince George County) to Flowerdew Hundred. Jordan’s Parish was between Martins Brandon Parish and the mouth of the Appomattox, which marked the beginning of Bristol Parish, Jordan’s was later united with Westover Parish for a short time but

in 1720 it became part of Martins Brandon when that parish was enlarged.

update: the siblings shown by Smith (Volume 6 link) are the children of this Burrell's brother Lewis (noted as "Lewis III" by Smith).

hmm. Seems Burrell, Lewis & Sarah were siblings, children of Lewis. (Sarah m Thweatt... sister, not daughter). see p 25 http://www.crossedbrushstudio.com/windowsintoourpast/Volume-pdf/Volume6.pdf & other sources.

Anne (Poythress) Green (bef.1682-aft.1733) - detached as mother of Sarah (Green) Thweatt ~ 4 July 2023

Biography

Anne Poythress was born in Virginia before 1682[29] to Francis and Rebecca Poythress.[30]

Anne married Burrell (sometimes Burwell) before 1721.[31] Their daughter Sarah Green married Miles Thweatt (b after 1702).[32]

"On 15 November 1721 Burrell Green and his wife Ann of Surry Co. and Francis Poythress of Prince George sold land to Robert Hunnicutt, part of a patent to Rebecca Poythress for 1000 acres of land ‘half of which land is in the possession of Littleberry Eppes, 300 acres of said land was given Rebecca Poythress, a daughter of said Rebecca and 200 acres to the sd. Anne Green. Burrell Green died intestate in Surry and his widow Ann was appointed adm. of his estate 19 Sep 1733. They appear to have lived in what was later Sussex County."[33][34]

Anne (Poythress) Green died after 1733[35] (she was appointed adm. of her husband's estate September 1733[33]).
