And.... this one - Help:Stickers for Veterans - is in the Stickers category & says...

Profile "Stickers" are little feature boxes that are inserted in a biography using a special bit code that looks like this: {{World War II}}. They're used to honor a person or highlight something important about them.

maybe the prohibition against extra line space does not apply to above/below stickers? from US Southern Colonies edit guidelines page (about the horizontal line).

[uncoded... copied from the displayed page, not the edit page]: Do not use a horizontal line in "people profiles". Although Help: Editing Tips recommends using a horizontal line to break up text, the US Southern Colonies Project does not - use subheadings instead. WikiTree guidelines do not allow a horizontal line above the =Biography= heading (see Help: Project Boxes) or with Stickers (Help:Stickers: "There should be no extra hard returns above or below it, and no horizontal rules").

  • Space:Templates_Project_Guidelines
  • Space:Template_Lessons (or not - quick look, Lessons 1, 2,* & 3 seem ok, Lesson 4 is "in progress" - also, Lesson 2 doesn't have a link to lesson 3 like 1 & 3 do). Lesson 2 is "Organizing Templates" so will probably need to be updated to address Type/Group/Subgroup as well as categories. And... Lesson 3, 2nd glance, probably needs updating (all parameters must be named, whether they're "unnamed" or not - at least for a creator of a template; user doesn't need to worry what the name is for the unnamed one... Unless by "name" you meant "number"? Also, you recently told me not to mix named & unnamed in the same template. The lesson should mention that. BUT... does this mean image= can't be used with a sticker that uses unnamed parameter/s?

Link to a separate checklist page (pages?) in this section (members section) for (1) reviewing existing templates, (2) creating a template.

Review e.g.s:

  • check that group/subgroup/etc. in the info box is correct (including timeframe)
  • check "what links here" to see if info is good
  • spot check some "profiles using this template" for problems
  • look for the template in DBE reports
  • analyze results of spot checking profiles & looking at DBEs ...
    • are changes needed
    • could template doc info explain usage better/have better examples
    • if template is project-managed, does the project have a space page that should be linked to from the template docs page (check that it's clear - if it was already linked to but is unclear, it may be causing problems rather than helping)
  • check all links from the template/docs page
    • check that they're still "live"
    • check that they link to what they say they link to
    • check that the info there is still good/appropriate

Notes about creating templates.

Note 1: about {{#ifeq:}} </nowiiki> (from TP/S via e-mail to Google Group 13 Sep 2021).... : "Use of <nowiki>{{#ifeq:}} technically works, but has a few of its own issues (e.g., case sensitive comparisons). I would prefer using {{#switch:}} as follows:

{{#switch: {{{lang|}}}
|pl=były członek Armii Krajowej
|en
|#default=was a member of the Armia Krajowa}}.
This also makes it easier to expand the possible languages later if needed. (e.g., Yiddish or Russian).

Help: Stickers

Profile Boxes are "templates" that insert a feature box on a profile using a special bit of code such as {{Unsourced}}.

Profile Stickers are a type of Profile Box, i.e. feature boxes that are inserted on a profile using a special bit of "template" code like {{Medal}}.

Stickers are used

  1. to honor a person or otherwise highlight something that's deemed to be very important about them, or
  2. by members on their own account profiles to tell others about themselves.

On ancestor profiles please abide by the agreed-upon style rules below. As appropriate, text should support the Sticker's use or expand upon it.

When used on members' own account profiles, Stickers can be used casually; you're encouraged to have fun with them and highlight anything you want other members and visitors to know about you.

How to Use Stickers

Here is an example:

[[Category:Halifax, Nova Scotia]]
[[Category:Fitchburg, Massachusetts]
== Biography ==
{{Migrating Ancestor
| origin = Canada
| destination = United States
| origin-flag = Flags.png
| destination-flag = Flags-1.png
}}
Joe Schmoe moved from Nova Scotia to Massachusetts when he was a young man. ...

... ... ... was awarded the Medal of Honor.
Flag of France
... ... ... migrated from France to Canada.
Flag of Canada
Flag of Oregon
Native Oregonian
Mining Emblem
... ... ... died in a copper mine explosion on 12 May 1854

Here are four examples of Profile Stickers: Medal, Migrating Ancestor, Nonmigrating Ancestor, and Mining Disasters.

For Stickers related to military service, see Stickers for Veterans.

See Category:Stickers for the full selection of Stickers.

Style Rules

Purpose

The purpose of a Profile Sticker is to honor a person or otherwise highlight something that's deemed to be important about them. Stickers support and decorate the biography. They are not intended to serve a unique functional purpose. <-- I'm not clear on what this means - obviously - since I created a sticker for use by the Magna Carta Project that was disallowed because of this statement (the "featured profile" sticker that linked to the article about them in the project's newsletter). It would be helpful if it could be clarified. I'd rather not use the sticker I had created in error as an example, but if that is exactly what the statement means, then maybe we should use it. I think I still have the coding for it somewhere & could put on one of my a sandbox pages - or a real template page but as "Development" (or Inactive? status) and only have it used here. (Actually, it would be good advertising for these features in addition to giving an example of a "unique functional purpose"... Yup, I've convinced myself. I'll add it (from a sandbox/Development for now; Inactive on it's own page - or a Project sandbox page later).

Rules on adding and removing

Profile Stickers can be placed on any profile on which they are appropriate by any contributor to the profile. In this context, "contributor" means anyone who is on the Trusted List and has been following changes or anyone who has been contributing to the profile - to include projects. As stated on the Help page for Project-Managed Profiles: "Profiles that are related to the subject matter of a project but not managed by it might have a profile sticker instead of a project box."

Note: If a Sticker adds a category, it may have usage instructions on the Template page that you should review. Go to Category: Stickers to find the link to the Sticker's Template page (it will be the same name as the Sticker to the first "pipe" - | - if there is one. For example, the Template page for {{US Southern Colonist Sticker|Georgia}} is Template: US Southern Colonist Sticker).

Stickers should not be placed by someone who does not actively follow the profile and who has not otherwise contributed to it, unless they communicate with the Profile Manager before or when the Sticker is placed.

Stickers can be removed by any contributor to the profile. They should not be added back without communicating with this contributor.

Stickers should not be included if any contributor does not want them there.

Maximum number per profile

There should be no more than five Profile Stickers on one profile. Three is better.

If more than five Stickers are applicable, contributors to the profile need to decide which five represent the most important things to highlight about the person's life.

This limit does not apply to members' own account profiles. The number of Stickers a member can use on their own profile is entirely up to the member.

This limit does not include Profile Boxes or other template types. That is, there could be five Stickers, a Project Box, and two Research Note Boxes.

Location on profiles

Profile Stickers go in the text section of the edit page below the Biography heading. There should be no extra hard returns above or below it, and no horizontal rules (----).

Stickers are usually placed directly below the Biography heading, but they can be placed elsewhere in the text, such as near where the information being highlighted is discussed.

They are usually grouped together but they can be spread out. In general, they should not be placed in or below the Sources section. <-- I added "In general" ... There are exceptions. I think the default text for documentation usage needs to be changed also:

[now] To add this sticker to a profile, place the string similar to the text in Code used: column of Examples table anywhere in the biography part of the profile. Usually you should put it next to the text describing a Sticker, but it should always be below the == Biography == heading and above the == Sources == heading.

[change to] To add this sticker to a profile, place the string similar to the text in the Code used: column of the Examples table (below) in the text section of the profile, below the == Biography == heading. Stickers are usually placed directly below the Biography heading, but they can be placed elsewhere in the text, such as near where the information being highlighted is discussed. .

Creation and Editing

Profile Stickers can only be created by the Templates Project. They should not be created independently.

If you would like a new Sticker, whether or not you are a member of the Templates Project, propose it in G2G using the Stickers tag. Include your thoughts on what it would say and give examples of profiles you manage that you would place it on. If three or more other active members say that they would also use it on profiles they manage, and there aren't strong objections from the community, it can be created.

All Profile Stickers must adhere to the following.<-- this statement will be changed... probably referencing template member's checklist.

new page... Creating and Editing a Profile Sticker

All Profile Stickers must adhere to the following.

Style Rules

See also the checklists.

Sticker Container

Profile Stickers must use the Sticker container. If a template does not use the Sticker container, it is not a Profile Sticker. Note that the Sticker container should never be used by itself. It is the container template used to create sticker templates.

The container template allows us to create and easily maintain uniform dimensions and styling, including font, border, margins, etc. It also enables us to make Profile Stickers "responsive" so that they display well on mobile devices.

Coding

Italics, bold, and links are allowed, but no custom styling should be done, i.e. no HTML or CSS is allowed.

Internal templates, such as {{Name}} and {{UK Flag}} are designed to be used in the creation of a template.

Images

Profile Stickers can have no more than two thumbnail images. They will be displayed at 50 pixels wide. Ideally they should be square, i.e. 50x50. They can be slightly taller but should never exceed 75 pixels high.

They should not be animated.

Categorization

Profile Stickers can do categorization, so that any profile with the sticker will be placed in a certain category or categories, but this is not necessary.

Text

Profile Stickers should have one sentence of text or one very short paragraph. It should never exceed 175 characters. 100-150 characters is preferred.

Examples:

  • {{Name}} was awarded the XYZ Medal.
  • {{Name}} migrated from Germany to England.

Profile Stickers, unlike Research Note Boxes, can be used to communicate information. That is, they can say something that is not said elsewhere in the biography. However, they usually highlight and summarize information that is discussed in more detail in the biography, with sources cited.

Template names

The name of the Sticker template should clearly communicate what it is used for. Acronyms should be avoided.

Examples:

Language: en | de | fr
