Still have a problem with her Price family though. Her first husband, John, by all accounts had at least three children by a wife named Mary. The Jamestown Muster of 1624/5 shows John and Ann together at Neck of Land. Hotten shows a 3-month-old daughter with them, named Mary.
For now, just looking at John's son John, but a comment that I posted on Price-760 also touches on son Mathew, who was also aboard the George in 1635, age 20. (See "Comment", below.)

John (40 in Muster)
I am beginning to think that more than one John Price was an early Virginian and that perhaps in WikiTree the John with the 1610-11 indenture and the John who is thought to have arrived in Virginia in 1611 aboard the Starr are being conflated. [See #Indenture section.]
At first, I thought that maybe the Henrico and Charles City John Prices were two different people, but they are not (keep reading).
Locations: England -> Virginia; Henrico -> Charles City
- In 1611, the Starr departed Land's End, England, on 27 March 1611 and landed in Virginia on 22 May 1611.[19]
- John Price was aboard the Starr (which sailing not stated) - shown in 1624/5 Muster as "May" arrival (no mention of year). The muster included persons aboard the Starr arriving in 1608 and 1610.[20]
- John Price was granted 150 acres, 20 February 1619[21]
- The "State of the Colony... when it was returned by the Company to the Crown in 1625" included a report on the condition of Henrico Corporation, which said, in part, that[22]
- prior to April 1622, "some 23 proprietors" had been granted 2800 acres, "but as a result of the massacre this corporation was almost depopulated in 1625, the only inhabitants then being on the college lands".[22]
- "the landowners of Henrico were either dead or living elsewhere.... John Price in 'the Neck of Land Charles City'"[22]
- "and thus the corporation became so small that at some time between 1625 and 1629 the bounds were extended down the river so as to include the upper part of Charles City, 'the Neck of Land' and 'the Curls of the River' below, making the dividing line as it was when the counties were formed in 1634."[22]
- In 1623/4 Living & Dead List and the 1624/5 Muster, he is living at Neck of Land, Charles Cittie Corporation (and shown in the muster with two houses, wife Ann & "a child" Mary, 3 months); William Price is head of his muster at Colledge Land,[23] with one "full armor", one piece, one house, 2.5 bushels of corn and 50 dry fish.[24]
- Hotten shows John Price as having 150 acres "by patent" at Henrico as of 1626.[25]

Son John
In researching Ann, I concluded that John's son John was the one said to have arrived in Virginia aboard the George in 1635, age 34. Her profile refers to John Price-760 (son of her husaband John Price-171) as born c1601. But the profile for Price-760, as of 21 January 2022, has his birth as 1627, which would mean that he would have to be Ann's son. The evidence I found does not support John born 1627. From Ann's profile:
- Two of the three children said to be Ann's by John Price are his sons Mathew and John, who arrived in Virginia aboard the George, 21 August 1635. Their ages at the time were 20 and 34, respectively.[26] This would make them the children of John's first wife, Mary Kemeye, with John born about 1601 and Mathew born about 1615. They are said to have been left in Wales to be educated when their parents went to Virginia, following in 1635 aboard the George (Jo. Severne, master).[27][28]
- Note - "Kemeye" is not found is a search of either John Price genealogy (B.L. Price's in 1910, V.C. Price's in 1988). The more accurate work (Price's 1988 genealogy) says that John and Mary had two sons and a daughter (snippit views from various searches do not find their names; if I were a Price descendant, I'd be buying her book!).
John Price, dead before 1 May 1662 and father of Daniel & John, supported by the will of John Rowen, dated 1 May 1662:[29]
- To nephew John Rowen, son of my brother, Henry Rowen, a cow.
- To my brother Henry, items, and he is to have the bringing up of the two sons of John Price, deceased, and the management of their estate.
- To the two orphans, Daniel and John Price, items.
- To Giles Carter, a cow and gift of a house and land on this plantation for one year, and then it to my brother Henry.
- All the rest to my son Henry. I desire he be brought up in the knowledge of letters by my brother-in-law Richard Ingram, whom I appoint as guardian and joint administrator to my estate with Francis Dancy.[30] Said child to be in the care of Richard Ingram and his wife and they to dispose of timber and cattle as to be most advantageous to said child.
- I give to Mr. James and wife a choice of a yoke of oxen.
- Wit: Richard Parker, William Fisher, Margaret Crewes.[31]
- Henrico Co VA Records, p.15.
- Wit: Richard Parker, William Fisher, Margaret Crewes.[31]
John Price's wife: "Adventurers of Purse and Person states that John Price's wife was a daughter of John Wall, but then cites a deed that is for the John in the next generation. They did conclude that John Rowen was her second husband."[32]
The preceding paragraph is from the profile of John Price, as are the following paragraphs:
- "The identity of the wife of the first John Price is unknown. She may have been a sister of John and Henry Rowen as evidenced by the Will of John Rowen, 1662, Henrico Co. Another more likely possibility is that she might have married John Rowen after the death of John Price and he was the stepfather of the young Price boys.
- "In his Will, John Rowen instructed his brother Henry to bring up the two sons of the deceased John Price and to manage their estates. He also made small bequests to the orphans, Daniel and John Price. Other bequests were made to his brother Henry, nephew John [son of Henry] and his own son Henry, as well as to Giles Carter. His brother-in-law Richard Ingram was asked to raise his son Henry.
- "At least one person has suggested that Giles Carter's wife Hannah was another Rowen and that is why he is mentioned in the will. I doubt that. I'm not sure she was old enough to have been married to Giles by 1662 - most estimate her birth as circa 1650. Of course if the estimate is wrong she could have been older. Then if she was older and married to Giles Carter as early as 1662, it seems her children would have been born earlier." ... could be... Hannah's profile now (22 January 2022) has birth year as 1638.

- http://www.pricedna.com/JohnPricetheEmigrant.pdf (starting on 11 of 64). See also archive.org's full text copy. Following bits relevant to children/wives/timeline (most known inaccuracies not listed):
- John Price born 1584 in Wales (Montgomery or possibly Brecknock)
- married Mary, with sons William and Matthewes
- married Ann, with daughter Mary
- 1620 patent for 150 acres in Henrico County
- implies John was a shareholder in the Virginia Company
- son Matthewes born in Wales in 1615, arrived aboard George in 1635
- possibly married a Miss Pugh of Wales or a Miss Nelson
- Mathew granted 150 acres in Henrico County, 23 May 1638
- John, son of Mathew - born about 1650 and married Miss Cannon, died 1711
- will for John "of Henrico County", attributed by B.L. to him, dated 15 December 1710, recorded in Henrico County, names daughters Mary Cannon and Eliza Price; sons John, Daniel, and Pew (all children of his wife Jane); proved by Jane and witnesses in a court held "at Varina for the County of Henrico the first Monday in June 1711"
- B.L. conclusion: William [age 19] arrived with John and Mary in 1620 while 5-year-old Matthewes was left in Wales
BL Price - Powys Club
- Note - this information provided, but Rev. Price himself includes information on page 10 that indicates this line ended without male heirs - citing Dwnn, he shows the line from Matthew Goch to Sir John Pryce & his son Mathew Pryce "whose line ran out, and Rev. Geo. Arthur Evors inherited and recovered the estate of Newtowne Hall. Notes made by Meyrick, editor of this volume, published 1846 says further that Newtowne Hall was at that time in possession of Air. Evors, a nephew of Rev. Geo. Arthur Evors. " - which argues against this family, from Newton, Montgomery, Wales, being the direct line for the American Prices (especially since "Sir Matthew Pryce, Baronet, sheriff" appears to be the son whose line ran out, and who was still in Wales in 1660). The Rev. Price may be proposing that the American Prices are probably from a branch of this family that emigrated to America, but I think there's a long way to go between "probably" and proof (especially considering how common the name "Price" is for a Welshman). ~ Noland-165, 23 Jan. 2022
- From the pdf (9-10 of 64), citing information from "The Powys Land Club, in 28 volumes (Powys land was the ancient name for Montgomeryshire). The Prices abound in these records and there are many pedigrees and other genealogical entries. Of them all, the most interesting is a photograph of the family tree of Richard Price, 1609 (see Vol. 18, p. 101). In Vol. 2, p. 398, a list of Prices who had been sheriffs of Powys with now and then an intervening generation is given. Note the (to us) interesting succession of proper names :
- Rhys, slain 1469.
- Thomas Pryse.
- Matthew Goch, sheriff of Montgomery Co., 1548.
- John Pryce, sheriff of Montgomery County., 1566-1586.
- Edward Pryce, sheriff of Montgomery Co., 1615
- Sir John Pryce, Baronet.
- Sir Matthew Pryce, Baronet, sheriff, 1659-1660.
- "In Vol. II. is found a Matthew Price, 1548, with an excellent chart containing names commonly used by the American family. Vol. VI., p. 45, gives Edward Price,1586, with brothers John, James, Charles and Thomas. In Vol. VIII., Elizabeth Pughe and her brother, John Price, 1633, are mentioned."

Indenture
- Indenture undertaken in 1610-11 would certainly seem to be related to John's immigration to America, but BLP says he was a freeman and shareholder... maybe by 1624/5 he was?
- Or... since the indenture mentions who his father was, can it be assumed that John was under age? If that's the case, then the date is just coincidence, because the John Price aboard the Starr in May [1611] was 40 in 1624/5... not a minor in 1610/11... this is more likely the John who was 34 aboard the George in 1635. Which means that John was not son of John & Mary.
- details from SGM[33]
- John Pryce, was described as son and heir of Richard Pryce in an indenture in 1610-11 from Richard Pryce of Manavon, Montgomery County, Gentlemen, and Ursula Pryce, his wife to ___ Robinson. Thomas Pryce, brother of Richard Price II, was one of the witnesses. [Indenture, British Museum, A.D.D. Charter 1036, PC]. The signature on this indenture corresponds in every detail with the signature of John Price on the Petition to the King sent from Virginia in 1625-26 when John Price signed as a member of the Burgess. [Public Record Office, London, England, C.O. 1/3, 17276, PC]." ...
- "This John Pryce was registered at the Shrewsbury School as John Pryce, gen. F. (i.e. 'son of a gentleman') 2 June 1600, two shillings sixpence. This was the entrance register. Two shillings sixpence were paid by those students not living in the town of Shrewsbury. Pupils generally entered at the age of fifteen or thereabouts. The three sons of Rev. Thomas [Pryce] of St. Chads entered in the following order: Daniel, Samson, John and each paid two pence because they were 'oppidans', (i.e. living in town). The John of this group, entering in 1603, therefore born about 1588 or 1589."
...
- Note from elsewhere in the SGM discussion... John son of Thomas did not immigrate.
- A Robinson found in Jamestown muster arrived 1622.
From VCP (p 511): "John Pryce was described as son and heir of Richard Pryce in an indenture in 1610-11 from Richard Pryce of Manavon, Montgomery..." (snippit view, that's all there is).
from BLP: "John Price lived on the "Neck of Land" in Charles City County, which was near to Jamestown, and later, near the "Falls of James River." Both he and his son William, who lived at "College Land," were planters, home builders and assisted in the founding of a Colony, but it is only in their muster that we find them in service.
- "All those colonists not indentured servants and not of the servant class, were mustered into service to help build the Empire, and of these Gentlemen Freeholders, John Price was one."
This Rootsweb page explains the land patents (1619 to John and 1638 to Mathew):[34]
- "There were two ways to acquire land in the Virginia Colony - either by paying for it or for laboring for seven years, after which one received a dividend for 100 acres of land. A "headright" of 50 acres could be earned by paying for one's own way or by paying passage for someone else. John Price received 150 acres in 1619; the first 100 apparently through his indenture; the 50 acres possibly acquired by paying passage for someone. If the first land was planted, he could become eligible for a matching tract. Son Matthew received the matching 150 acres after the death of his father. Henrico Patents 1623/43, p.551]. At the time Matthew received this patent, his mother and stepfather, Robert Hallom, were living adjacent the original patent."
Additional information from that Rootsweb page...
- In Appendix IV, p.527, of ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF JOHN PRICE, is a "Discussion of the Land Patent to John Price" written by Rupert Taylor, 9 Feb 1936 and found among the holdings of the VA Historical Society in Richmond. He platted the land of Robert Hallom, who married Ann, widow of the immigrant John Price, which was described as adjoining that of John Price - there is a sketch provided. Comparing this land with that of the land sold by Hatcher to Pleasant which had been sold to Hatcher's father by Daniel & John Price, sons of John Price, he determined this was definitely not the land granted to Mathew Price but the original land granted to the immigrant John in 1619. Comparison of dates was convincing that the said Daniel & John could not possibly be sons of the immigrant John, leaving the only conclusion that the immigrant had a son also named John that was their father. The three children and heirs of Robert Hallom, or their heirs, eventually sold the 1000 acres Hallom tract to William Randolph, each of these transactions further proving the location of the land of John Price.
- There was a Indian massacre on 22 Mar 1622, killing 347 people of the colony of Virginia. John Price was a survivor of the massacre and listed as living in "the Neck of Land, Charles City."
- The term "Ancient Planter" is applied to those persons who arrived in Virginia before 1616, remained for a period of at least three years, paid their passage, and survived the massacre of 1622. They received the first patents of land in the new world as authorized by Sir Thomas Dale in 1618 for their personal adventure. John Price is on the list of those designated as "Ancient Planter".
Order of Descendants of Ancient Planters is an incorporated non-profit society whose purpose is to honor and perpetuate the memory of the Ancient Planters; to promote historical and genealogical research; to inspire patriotism; and to enhance fellowship among those of similar interests.
- And... the Rootsweb page supports that the John enrolled in 1600 in Shrewsbury is the one in the Jamestown muster, with loads of explanation, including the "comparison of his signature on a petition of the Virginia House of Burgesses with the signature on a Welsh indenture shows he was son of Richard Price, of Manafon, Montgomeryshire, and his wife Ursula."
Jamestown Muster
Timeline has me confused. If John patented land in 1619 (1618-20) along Turkey Island Creek in Henrico, why was he listed in Living & Dead at Neck of Land, Charles Cittie. Or is that where the land was? Also, the land patented in 1638 by his son Mathew... it says was due John Price ... had John Price not claimed it? Is the John with the 1610 indenture and was aboard the Starr the same one due the 150 acres?

Son Mathew
B.L. Price says (56-57 of 64 in the pdf) that "William Price, who was born in Wales, was a son of John and Mary, emigrants, 1620. He raised a family at "College Land," and his descendants lived in Gloucester, Middlesex and other eastern counties." He goes on to give the following information (implying they are descendants of William), having cited "REGISTER OF CHRIST'S CHURCH, MIDLESEX COUNTY, VA." and stating that the "following record is given, because the crests and seals are found in Middlesex County, Virginia".
I wouldn't set too much store by William of the College Land raising a family (no indication he married), although he could have immigrated with John (either as adult son or brother... his age is not given in the 1624/5 muster). However, the following information is probably good for Robert & Jane's children & should be able to be verified in the parish register.
- Robert Price (1640-1689) appears to be the profile for this Robert (at least, he's the profile attached as father of John born 29 Jan 1672 as of 23 Jan. 2022).
- Robert and Jane Price, their children, viz (Mrs. Jane Price died March 27, 1687) :

Transported persons
From Early Virginia Families Along the James River: Henrico County, Goochland County, Virginia (page 6).[35] Jno. Price is one of of the 40 people transported, claimed by William Farrar:
- 11 June 1637: William was given the patent for 2,000 acres at Farrar's Island as payment for headright of 40 passengers - possibly for those who arrived in 1619, although some accounts say that the Garland never arrived in Virginia. The patent was posthumously awarded to to his son, William Farrrar. The patent reads:
- "Patent to Capt Wm Farrar, 2000 acres on the north side of James River Bounding and abutting lands of Varina, thence extending .... Due for transportation of 40 persons...And upon survey there shall not be found the said quantities of 2000 acres of lands within the aforesaid bounds, that then the said Wm Farrar measured his full quantities upon the northerly bounds of the said lands into the woods"[36]
The previous info from the profile for William Farrar (senior), which also had this information about the Garland.
- 17 June 1619: Court minutes stated that the ship Garland was carrying 130 passengers, 90 of them to be dropped off at Somers Island (now known as Bermuda) in the charge of Capt. Miles Kendall and the remaining 40 were to travel on to Virginia, where they would be under the charge of William Farrar.[37]
Newtown or Manafan or Glan Meheli
The very confusing conclusion from Kay Haden's site, which appears to be a copy of an SGM discussion:[34]
- Mail Group on Google: soc.genealogy.medieval, "Royal Ancestry: John Price of Jamestown", Exchange of 28 March 2004.
- Paul K Davis: Fellow Researchers & Family, I have concluded that John Price, who came to Jamestown, Virginia in 1611, was a descendent of king Malcolm II of Scotland and of king Ethelred "the unready" of England. This John Price is an ancestor of my paternal grandmother, Dorotha Ellen Repass.
- For nearly a century it has been claimed that this John Price was descended from barons who signed the Magna Carta, however some aspects of his ancestry have been the subject of divergent claims. I consulted GEDCOM databases made public through the internet and found quite a few discrepancies in what was said about who his ancestors were. I have compared these, eliminated those which could be disproved, and found one, by Jackie Watson, remaining. I have checked its conclusions using generally reliable library sources and citations of primary evidence, and concluded that it is indeed correct. I found that one line in this ancestry, when traced further, led to kings Malcolm II of Scotland and Ethelred II of England.
- Below I present this line, with comments where it seems appropriate, followed by a list of the important sources.
- John Price [1583/4 - 1628/30] was son of Richard Price and Ursula. John has often been listed as son of Thomas Price, vicar of St. Chad's in Shrewsbury, without citation of primary evidence, but comparison of his signature on a petition of the Virginia House of Burgesses with the signature on a Welsh indenture shows he was son of Richard Price, of Manafon, Montgomeryshire, and his wife Ursula. Close estimates from both sides of the Atlantic also agree concerning his age.
- Richard was son of Richard ap John Price and Elizabeth Herbert. Richard has often been listed as son of Richard ap John Price of Newtown, but there was also a Richard ap John Price of Glan Meheli, and Burke lists the Richard of Newtown as having died without issue. Furthermore, Richard the
father of the immigrant John Price is shown to have an association with the Glan Meheli branch of the Price family by common attendance of children at the same school in Shrewsbury. The above cited indenture shows Richard, the father of immigrant John, to have had a brother named Thomas, and the Visitation shows Richard ap John Price of Glan Meheli, to have had younger sons name Richard and Thomas. This Thomas is generally believed to be the one who was vicar of St. Chad's. While there is another Price family of Manafon, that Richard has a wife not named Ursula, and his son John evidently raised a family in Britain, not Virginia. Immigrant John was listed in the school records as son of a gentlemen, and the Glan Meheli family was such. Manafon is a bit north of Glan Meheli, and both are in the sector of Montgomeryshire which borders the portion of Shropshire containing Shrewsbury. I conclude we must accept this match, and reject the Newtown claim with its possible Magna Carta connections.
- Elizabeth Herbert [- 1574], the grandmother of immigrant John, was daughter of Richard Herbert [1468/70 - 1539] and Anne verch David. The Visitation pedigree, signed by her husband Richard and eldest son Edward, clearly shows this. This Richard was a son of Richard Herbert [1412-1469], of Coldbrook, and Margred verch Thomas. The signed Visitation pedigree clearly shows this. These relationships are also shown in the generally accepted pedigree of the Herberts as given in, for example, Burke's Landed Gentry, latest edition, which also gives further Herbert ancestry.
- Margred was the sister of the important Welshman, Sir Rhys ap Thomas [-1525], whose ancestry has been well studied. Their mother was Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Griffith [- 1471] of Wichnor in Staffordshire. John's parents were Thomas Griffith [1377 - 1431] and Anne Blount. Thomas' father was Rhys ap Griffith the younger [- 1381]. Rhys' parents were Rhys ap Griffith the elder [- 1356] and Joan Somerville [- 1376]. ... [more on Hayden's site]

- From Kay's site (apparently from Vina's book): "John Pryce, was described as son and heir of Richard Pryce in an indenture in 1610-11 from Richard Pryce of Manavon, Montgomery County, Gentlemen, and Ursula Pryce, his wife to ___ Robinson. 1/3, 17276, PC]."[34]

Parents: Either son of Griffith (Ap Rhys) Rhys (abt.1501-abt.1528), son of Richard Price (born 1530), or son of Griffith's brother (per WikiTree as of 24 January 2022) John Price (abt.1544-) and Elizabeth Blayney (1546-1547), John's wife (Elizabeth Blayney, born 1538, also said to have been wife of Richard Price - see below). Note - this profile, [Price-172], was detached from John and Elizabeth as parents on 24 January 2022.
Neither this profile - [Price-172]: Richard Price (1555-1638), previously attached as son of John and Elizabeth - nor Richard (Price) ap Rhys (abt.1554-abt.1638), attached as son of Griffith, included any reliable sources as of 23 January 2022. (It should be noted that a son of Griffith would be ap Griffith, not ap Rhys.)
Pre-merge - this profile appears to be a duplicate of Price-8010 and a merge has been proposed. At the time of the proposal, the datafields for this profile ([Price-172]) had the following information:
- Richard Price, born 1555 in Manavon, Montgomeryshire, Wales
- Husband of Ursula (Middleton) Price — married 1582 in Wales,,,England

"The Visitation text to which I refer is near the bottom of page 315 of volume one of Meyrick's edition of Dwn. It is captioned "The Pedigrees of Richd. ap John ap Meredith, one of the Gentlemen of the Parish of Kerie". The third paragraph begins - "The said Rich\d maried Elizabeth, y\e younger daughter of Sir Rich\d Herbert, K\t son to S\t Rich\d Herbert, K\t descended of Colebrook. They had issue Edward, James, John, Charles, Thomas, Rich\d, Marg\t, and Mary." Further information is provided on the ancestry of Richard Price and on the wives and children of his oldest son, Edward. The section concludes "Testified by Rich\d Jno. Meredith and Edward Price, vi. die Junii, Anno R. R. Elizabeth xxviii Anno Domini 1586." Since two children are given by Edward's first wife, and none by his second wife, I would assume the two children were young in 1586. This makes them probably just a little bit older than my immigrant, who was apparently born in 1584, as would be expected if they were cousins, with my immigrant's father being a younger brother."[45]

Comment posted 26 January 2022 on Price-171 (by me):
I'm not finding support for a mother named Ursula. I did find information that David Middleton is not known to have had a daughter named Ursula - see the discussion here - so his mother was not Ursula Middleton. There was an Ursula Middleton who was buried in 1637, in England, but she was the wife of John Middleton (maiden name not known - see this G2G discussion).
From what I've been able to determine, the FindAGrave memorial should not be used as a source for him. Is there another source that can be cited for his mother being a Middleton?
And on Ursula's profile the same day:
Please see the discussion here about "Ursula Middleton", daughter of David, which is persuasive that David had no daughter named Ursula.
That the mother of John "the immigrant" Price is named Ursula is based on a 1610-11 indenture cited in Vina Price's 1998 book (however, I have not been able to confirm that the indenture existed as transcribed, or that her book is citing it as having been confirmed by her or being shared from an unconfirmed source).
I think that this profile needs to be detached from David and Ellen & changed to "Unknown" Last Name at Birth (LNAB). If she is retained as wife of Richard or moved to be mother of William Middleton (b/d 1637) is another question.
- Vina's book... snippit view shows the indenture mentioned on p 511, which is the appendix, which I believe shares unconfirmed information. And the snippit does not include the full transcription (just Richard, not Ursula) - see this search of the Google Book
Comment posted 21 Jan. 2022 (by me) on Price-760:
I think that this John, son of John, is the one said to have arrived in Virginia aboard the George, 21 August 1635, age 34 - putting him as born in 1601 (before Ann, who was born about 1604).
The 1638 patent reference is confusing for two reasons - first, the same 1638 patent appears to be cited as being granted to Mathew, son and heir of John, and to John, son and heir of John. Both refer to the land that was granted to father John as being held "by his mother Ann Hallom"... which would support them both being sons of Ann, if the writer of the patent was being literal (that Ann was actually the mother of Mathew, rather than his step-mother... called then mother-in-law).
From what I can tell, the same book that uses the 1638 patent to refute that Mathew was a son of John and Mary says that John and Mary had two sons and a daughter (John and Mathew, and probably Mary). ~ See this search & the intro for the book.
The second problem with a 1638 patent granted to a son of John means that the son had to have been at least 21 years old at the time - only adults could patent land. So he would have been born in 1617 or earlier. The Ann who was listed as wife of John Price in the 1624/5 Jamestowne Muster was born about 1604 and arrived in Virginia aboard the Francis Bonaventure in 1620; John had arrived in 1611 aboard the Starr.
And trying to figure the timeline for John the father, considering a term of indenture to account for the 8 years between his arrival (in 1611) and patent for land (in 1619)... the following scenario works:
John (the father)
- arrived in Virginia in 1611, leaving a wife and son John (born c1601) in England,
- served several years of an indenture
- went home c1614/1615, where he fathered Mathew (born before 1617; per the George, born 1615)
- returned to America (right away? alone? with Mary? since his sons John and Mathew are said to have arrived in 1635 aboard the George, it seems that they grew up in England)
- patented 150 acres of land in 1619 (20 Feb. 1619 - 1618/19 or 1619/20?)
- 1623/4, living with wife (not named) at Neck of Land, per Living and Dead list
- 1624/5, living at Neck of Land with wife Ann, per 1624/5 Jamestown Muster; 3-month-old Mary Price listed with them by Hotten- note: search of Jamestown Muster for just "Mary" turns her up
- 1628, died
BUT... I don't see that John ever did patent land.

- ↑ Richard was the brother of Thomas Price, vicar of St. Chad's in Shrewsbury.
Their father was Richard ap John Price of Glan Meheli (m Elizabeth Herbert? - per SGM recap)... Richard ap Richard ap John Price of Glan Meheli "had younger sons named Richard and Thomas. This Thomas is generally believed to be the one who was vicar of St. Chad's." (SGM recap, citing "the Visitation") I infer that the Richard & Thomas brothers were Richard father of John the Immigrant and his brother Thomas, Vicar of St. Chad's, but the SGM post might be saying that the Vicar is a different generation. - based on "The above cited indenture shows Richard, the father of immigrant John, to have had a brother named Thomas, and the Visitation shows Richard ap John Price of Glan Meheli, to have had younger sons name Richard and Thomas." - ↑ 12.0 12.1 SGM and/or Kay Haden: "Elizabeth Herbert [- 1574], the grandmother of immigrant John, was daughter of Richard Herbert [1468/70 - 1539] and Anne verch David. The Visitation pedigree, signed by her husband Richard and eldest son Edward, clearly shows this. This Richard was a son of Richard Herbert [1412-1469], of Coldbrook, and Margred verch Thomas. The signed Visitation pedigree clearly shows this."

Copy of Space: Price Genealogy... (before re-do)
As of 1 February 2022, 5:24 PM, here's what the Space page had. I'm going to start over this evening.
Researchers and descendants disagree and sources are unclear and contradictory. This page is for reference to WikiTree family trees that are involved.
John the Immigrant
Price-171: John Price I (abt.1584-1628), arrived in Virginia aboard the Starr, probably the sailing which arrived 22 May 1611. He is shown as 40 years old in the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster with wife Ann (21) and a 3-month-old child named Mary.[46]
Birth about 1584 based on age reported in the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster (40). The Jamestowne Society has his birth as about 1586 and death in 1628.[47]
The 1626 report on the status of Virginia shows that John Price had 150 acres "by patent" in Henrico Corporation.[48] Mathew Price, "sonn and heire to John Price", was granted 150 acres in 1638, "[d]ue in right of his father who had a pattent of 150 acs. graunted 20 Feb. 1619 by Sir Georg Yeardly."[49][50] As explained on Kay Haden's site:[34]
- There were two ways to acquire land in the Virginia Colony - either by paying for it or for laboring for seven years, after which one received a dividend for 100 acres of land. [Henrico Patents 1623/43, p.551]. At the time Matthew received this patent, his mother and stepfather, Robert Hallom, were living adjacent the original patent.[34]
See this G2G discussion, which includes the following synopsis by Kathie Forbes (posted 26 January 2022):
- Dorman discusses this family at length in "Adventurers of Purse and Person,"[51] although there is no mention of John Price's antecedents. John arrived in Virginia in 1611 on the Starr, his wife Ann arrived on the Francis Bonaventure in 1620. John died in 1628 and his widow married a man named Robert Hallom. According to Dorman John and Ann were the parents of three children, a daughter Mary 3 months old in 1624/25, a son Matthew, alive in 1638, and a son John, age unknown. Matthew and Mary apparently died without descendants. Per Dorman, the sons of John Price sold in 1677 the land that Matthew patented in 1638 which "shows that John was the third child of John Price." (Vol. 2, p. 829). John the younger married the daughter of John Wall; they had two children Daniel and another John (identified as such in the will of John's widow's second husband, John Rowen).
Unknown-553968: Ann (Unknown) Llewellyn (1604-bef.1666)
- John's widow, Ann (maiden name unknown), married (2) Robert Hallom, (3) Daniel Llewellyn. She was the mother of Daniel's children, named in his will; she may have been the mother or Robert's heirs. See her profile for details & sources.
Father of John
Price-172: Richard Price (1555-1638) - dates need confirmation; wife needs source (currently Ursula Middleton-22, but no support that she was a Middleton).
Richard is father of John the Immigrant because...
- "John Pryce, was described as son and heir of Richard Pryce in an indenture in 1610-11 from Richard Pryce of Manavon, Montgomery County, Gentlemen, and Ursula Pryce, his wife to ___ Robinson.
See this 2004 SGM discussion (especially the posts by Paul K Davis) and this Rootsweb page (by Kay Haden).
- SGM discussion includes the following points:
- The above cited indenture shows Richard, the father of immigrant John, to have had a brother named Thomas, and
- the Visitation shows Richard ap John Price of Glan Meheli, to have had younger sons name Richard and Thomas. This Thomas is generally believed to be the one who was vicar of St. Chad's.
- While there is another Price family of Manafon, that Richard has a wife not named Ursula, and his son John evidently raised a family in Britain, not Virginia.
- Immigrant John was listed in the school records as son of a gentlemen, and the Glan Meheli family was such.
- Manafon is a bit north of Glan Meheli, and both are in the sector of Montgomeryshire which borders the portion of Shropshire containing Shrewsbury.
- I [PKD] conclude we must accept this match, and reject the Newtown claim with its possible Magna Carta connections.
Vina Price's 1988 Ancestor and Descendants of John Price says that the John who came to Virginia aboard the Starr is "of Breckonshire".[52] Research discussed in SGM concludes his father was of Glan Meheli, with ties to the Marafon Prices (not the Newtown Prices).[53]
Which Richard
- Which Richard (in the records and in WikiTree) is the father of John the Immigrant is a bit trickier to determine.
- The WikiTree profile being developed as the one representing the father of John the immigrant is
- Price-172: Richard Price (1555-1638) work in progress as of 27 January 2022
- Apparent duplicates: Richard (Price) ap Rhys (abt.1554-abt.1638) in a proposed merge ... added note that he's not "ap Rhys" - that Richard's son John is not John the Immigrant. 8010 also had a warning: "A father's death date (Ap Rhys-54 died 1528) should not be more than nine months before one of his children's birth dates (Price-8010 born 1554) ."
- The History of Parliament Online has two biographies for the Richard Price who is son of John, with a brother Thomas (but this Richard's wife is listed as Gwen/Gwenllian, not Ursula):
- Sir Richard Price (1561-1623) of Plâs Gogerddan, Gogerddan, Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire, "m. bef. 1591, Gwen (Gwenllian) (d.1639) da. and h. of Thomas ap Rhys ap Morys ap Owen of Aberbechan, Newtown, Mont., 4s (1 d.v.p.), 6da.(2 d.v.p.)4 suc. fa. 1584;5 kntd. 28 June 1603.6 d. 5 Feb. 1623.7 sig. Rich[ard] Pryse." biographical information in the 1604-1629 section
- Richard Price (1562-1623) of Gogerddan, Llanbadarnfawr, Cardiganshire married "Gwen (or Gwenllian), da. and h. of Thomas ap Rhys ap Morus of Aberbechan, Newtown, Mont." from the 1558-1602 section
- Brother of Thomas Price (-1623)
- Richard and Thomas were sons of John Price (by 1532-84) of the Inner Temple, London and Gogerddan, Card., who married (1) Elizabeth Perrot, (2) Bridget, daughter of James Price of Monaughty, Rad. This John Price has a second History of Parliament Online biography:
- So, these WikiTree profiles are not the Richard (and family) that we're looking for:
- Richard Price (1545-1623) - attached as son of John Price-5793 & Elizabeth Perrot; husband of Gwenllian Pryse (1545-) duplicate is apparently Richard Pryse (abt.1562-abt.1623) (cites HOP bio for Richard who married Gwen)
- Catherin Price (1575-1623), daughter of Richard and Gwen, married
- John Price (1570-1623) of London
- Richard Pryse (1505-) - was attached as son of Thomas Pryce (abt.1489-aft.1509), brother of Matthew Price (abt.1510-abt.1556), and father of John Pryse Esq (abt.1531-bef.1584)
- Elizabeth (Perrot) Price (1528-abt.1605), married
- John Price (abt.1532-1584)
- John Pryse Esq (abt.1531-bef.1584) in a proposed merge with Pryse-35, attached as Bridget's husband
- James Ap Rhys (1502-) (James Price), father of
- Bridget ferch James ap Rhys (1532-), married
- John Pryse (abt.1530-bef.1584)
- James Pryse (abt.1571-1642) (son of John & Bridget)
- Also not the Richard who was father of John the immigrant:
- Richard Pryse (abt.1562-abt.1623)
- Richard ap Rhys (abt.1565-abt.1630) married Gwen Salusbury
- Richard Price MP (abt.1538-bef.1587)
- Richard Price (1530-) attached as son of Joyce Gwynne, who was Matthew Goch's wife:
- Matthew Price (abt.1510-abt.1556)
- Joyce Gwynne (1515-1550) in proposed merge with Gwynne-63 and Rhys-1

I think that nothing had been changed after the previous save, but a LOT of changes made on a different copy, so I didn't save it.
This research page is for the ancestry of "John the Immigrant". Members of the two main branches - descendants of Thomas and Meredith, sons of Rhys ap Dafydd Llwyd[4] - are often confused, as are those members of more distantly related branches.
For more information about John Price in America and his descendants, see their profiles and the research space page Price Family - Jamestown and Virginia Patriots.
Lineage of John Price "the Immigrant"
John Price immigrated to Virginia aboard the Star, arriving in May - probably in the year 1611.[54] He was the son of Richard Pryce of Glan Meheli,[55][56] who was the son of Richard ap John ap Meredith, gent.[3]
To give John's ancestry in the Welsh way, from information in the Visitations of Wales:
- John ap Richard ap Richard ap John ap Meredith ap Rhys ap Dafydd Llwyd ap Dafydd ap Einion ap Howell ap Tudor ap Einion ap Ieva ap Grownwy ap Ivor ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan, etc.[2]
- The estimated dates that work for the lineage of John of Virginia as portrayed in WikiTree (see their profiles for details and sources):
- John Price born about 1586
- Richard Price born about 1555/60
- Richard ap John ap Meredith born about 1530, living June 1586, when he testified (along with his oldest son Edward Price) in the Visitations of Wales[3]
- John ap Meredith born about 1500
- Meredith ap Rhys ap Dafydd Llwyd born about 1465-9
- Rhys ap Dafydd Llwlyd born about 1440
- Dafydd Llwyd born about 1400
- Dafydd ab Einion born about 1375
- Wives are named in the Visitations of Wales.[4][3] See also the tabular pedigree for descendants of "David Lloyd of Llanfair in Cedewaen, now called Newtown Hall" (through his grandsons Thomas and Meredith) at "Newtown Hall and Vaenor" in The History of the Princes,... and the Ancient... Lords of Arwystli, Cedewen, and Meirionydd (starting on page 374).[57]
Welsh Patronymic: The Visitations uses the English version of names; e.g., Meredith instead of the Welsh Maredudd (or its variant, Meredydd).[58]
Surname: Although it is said that from the time of Thomas and Meredith ap Rhys, the descendants of Rhys ap Dafydd Llwyd went by the surname based on his name (Pryse, Pryce, Price). However, John's grandfather Richard, son of Meredith, had apparently not adopted a surname in 1586. The report of his family and that of Edward, his oldest son, are "[t]estified by Richd Jno. Meredith and Edward Price".[59]
Anchor Dates
1625: John Price was 40 in the 1624/5 Jamestown Muster[54] and his birth year was estimated as 1586 by the Jamestowne Society[60] The 1586 estimate seems to be confirmed by the Visitations of Wales: testimony in June 1586 by Richard Jno. Meredith, John's grandfather, names Richard among his children but does not mention any grandchildren (although his oldest son, Edward Price, reports two children by his first wife, and a second wife).[3]
1610/11: John Price signed an indenture in 1610/11, in which he was described as "son and heir of Richard Pryce of Manavon, Montgomery"[61]
1586: Richard ap John ap Meredith was the source of information for his family in the 1586 Visitation of Wales. His oldest son Edward Price reported two children by his first wife, and a second wife.
1485-1509: Meredith ap Rhys was "Esquire of the body to K. Henry 7th" - Henry Tudor, king from 22 August 1485 to 21 April 1509 (according to his profile)
1461-1470: Rhys ap Dafydd Llwyd was "Esquire of the body of Edward the 4th" - Edward York was king from 4 Mar 1461 to 3 October 1470 and from 11 Apr 1471 to 9 Apr 1483 (according to his profile)
