The purpose of this team is:

To gather a group of Nordic Project members who enjoy working on removing the clutter from profiles created by old gedcom uploads. We separate out the trash from the treasure and eventually polish each profile to a shine. Once all the Nordic profiles in a Gedcom are clean, our work with that Gedcom is done.

What do members of this team do?

We mainly work on improving Nordic profiles by removing/replacing gedcom junk that was automatically added with old gedcom import procedures. The Gedcom junk database error only shows profiles with 3 or more "junk" headings. This leaves a lot that are still junky and need to be cleaned up.

Some members might also be part of other teams, like the Nordic Sourcing Team, and take on a more thorough approach to improving each profile.

Some members may only have time to add the biography heading or the unsourced template. Every little bit helps and is appreciated.

Any member of this team (or anyone not on this team, feel free to pitch in) can work from maintenance categories for gedcom cleanup, work on profiles from a specific gedcom import or go through the DBE Suggestions related to gedcoms. Any approach will improve Nordic profiles!

Introduction

While the Nordic Project really wants EVERY Nordic profile to look its very best, we are also aware of the many, many gedcom imported profiles that have barely been touched by anyone since they were imported. This is where the Nordic Gedcom Scrap Team can help make a difference!

• Please use caution when using the Automatic Gedcom Cleanup tool
  • There is a default user option to make the husband's LNAB the current last name that must be UNCHECKED when using this for most Nordic profiles.
  • Please also uncheck the Remove the Gedcom import information option
• BioCheck - Great for showing what's unsourced but not marked unsourced. You will need increase the max # in all 3 of the fields that say Max.

  • Under Search on the left, you can enter multiple search terms in the text box using the name of the search field. For example BirthCountry=Sweden GEDFile=Williams_AndersForWikiTree_ged will get you all profiles where the birth country is Sweden in that particular Gedcom. Separate the terms with a space. You can also copy and paste the below and fill in the blanks. More field names can be found on the Wikitree + help page

GedImprove Project

The GEDImprove project, which we coordinate with, is a bit more formal and mostly handles larger Gedcoms. They have certain criteria for publishing a Gedcom on their spreadsheet and those need to be handled a little differently. Karin_Blood_Ged is the only one as of May 2022.

If you are going to work on a profile for a GedImprove Gedcom, please open the GedImprove spreadsheet, find the tab for the Gedcom and put your name in the reviewer column next to the profile you're working on.

When you've finished with the GedImprove checklist (or as much of it as you intend to do), go back to the spreadsheet and pick a status from the reviewer status columnand enter a comment in the reviewer comment column. The goal of the comment is for the project to be able to tell if they can call that profile done or not. Gedi-challenge channel on Discord https://discord.gg/9EMSdccnn3

Tasks

These are the different things that can be done. One person doesn't have to do all of them for each profile. The Gedcom name shouldn't be removed until all are done (if post 1700), however.

• Review ? profiles in Biocheck and add the country appropriate unsourced template. You can do two countries in one unsourced template if needed: Unsourced|Sweden|Estonia with two squiggly brackets around it.
• Clean up the junk!
  • Only profiles with 3 or more "junk" heading show up in the suggestion reports so biocheck is the easiest way to see the others
  • Using the AGC app is the fastest way to do this. Most of the time with one click of a button, it's clean.
• Work on profiles by location (or no location) and Gedcom
  • BirthCountry=Denmark GedFile=Williams_AndersForWikiTree_ged can be pasted into the text search on Wikitree + or the search text box in Biocheck. You can mix and match countries and Gedcoms!
  • Many profiles don't have a country in the location fields and many of those are Nordic. You can use BirthCountry=UnknownCountry or BirthLocation=MissingLocation with the GedFile= and add countries.
  • You can also do a find a replace from Wikitree + for a faster way if many locations are the same and only missing the country. Find a replace will only replace the end of a location.
• Categories can be added at any time. Maintenance categories, parish categories, migration categories, etc.
• If a profile is post 1700, clean (no junky headers) with appropriate information and at least one primary source, you can and should remove the Gedcom information. This applies to Nordic profiles only, other projects may have different guidance. Suggested comment to add: This profile was cleaned and sourced by the Nordic Gedcom Scrap Team. <gedcom name> has been removed. If it's pre-1700, we need to keep the Gedcom name. You can, if you like, shorten the statement under acknowledgements to just the Gedcom name.
