The purpose of this page is to describe the Nordic Trail and how it works

What is the Nordic Trail?

The Nordic Trail Team consists mainly of Trail Guides who help new project members, called Explorers, research and improve some of the current orphan profiles of people who lived in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden and that needs some attention. An "orphaned profile" is a profile that does not have a Profile Manager.

The Nordic Trail focuses on freely-available online research resources, as many people don't have access to subscription services such as Ancestry and ArkivDigital (a Swedish paid website), for example.

We hope, in time, that all new Nordic Project members can be offered to start their Nordic Project membership with the Nordic Trail. That the first step would be to become an Explorer and be paired with a Trail Guide to show you the ropes, as you learn how to find sources for your country of choice. However, for the time being, the Nordic Trail is optional as we only have the trail set up for these countries:

In the future, we hope to continue build on this first step of the trail and even create a second step, learning about even more advanced research.

How does it work?

The first person an Explorer get in contact with is the Nordic Trail Coordinator, who then will pair the Explorer with an available Trail Guide. The Trail Guide adopt an orphan profile suitable to work on, prepares it for the Explorer, and then makes contact with Explorer by email.

Once an Explorer are set up with a guide, we hope they will be able to start the trail straight away and to show commitment to completing the trail. If you think of become an Explorer but know you won't be able to dedicate yourself to the Trail over the next month or so, please wait until you have more time.

The Explorer will improve a total of 3 orphaned profiles, one at a time, and the Trail Guide will be there to help and answer questions. After an Exlorer finish the work of the first profile, the Trail Guide will give feedback and/or suggestions and prepare a new profile for to work on, until 3 in total are done by the Explorer

What will Explorers learn?

Current available "trail path" is simply called "Step one". In this part you will learn about;

  • How and where to find reliable sources for the Nordic country of choice and how to cite them.
  • How to edit the data fields of profiles according to both Wikitree's Style Rules as well as to any guidelines of the specific country chosen to work on.
  • How to give structure to biography section, adding links to other profiles and web pages.
  • Using location categories, stickers and templates
  • Info on Nordic Names customs and spelling, using Nordic "special letters"

The Trail is designed to empower you to be able to do your own family history research. And since the Nordic Project's goals is to make every Nordic profile the best it can be, we hope examinated Explorers want to continue to contribute with that, now with additional skills learned in the Nordic Trail.

How long does the Trail take?

It depends on the Explorer and how much time they have available, and of course also to some degree on how much time the assigned Trail Guide have at the moment. If an Explorer are well-organized and give the Nordic Trail priority, it is estimated that the first step could be finished in about 2 weeks.

If an Explorer should be busy with other things or are very new to researching the country of choice, it could take longer. We strongly encourage Explorers to get the Trail finished as soon as possible. A Trail Guide will only handle one Explorer at a time so if one is busy with an Explorer who is not responding due to lack of time, another Explorer might have to be put on a waiting list.

It is also important that an Explorer stay in regular contact with the Trail Guide. If a Trail Guide has not heard from the Explorer for more than 2 weeks, the Explorers participation in the Trail will be paused so the guide can be assigned someone else. If the Explorer do not resume the Trail within 3 months, Nordic Project will assume there is no longer any interest in participating.

What will a Trail Guide do?

Trail Guides are friendly volunteers who like helping members fairly new to WikiTree and/or Nordic research. A Trail Guide will be assigned only one Explorer at a time by the Nordic Trail Coordinator. If accepting an assignment, the Trail Guide should estimate to have time to work with/be in communication with the Explorer for the next few weeks at least.

The Nordic Trail should be mostly self-directed but a Trail Guide should be able help out with any questions an Explorer might have along the way as they work on their three assigned profiles (one at a time). A Trail Guide can give tips on where to look for sources and additional info but should not do the work for the Explorer. Once the Explorer finished the first profile, the guide gives feedback on the content and prepare a new profile for Explorer to work on.

The preparation of a profile includes the Trail Guide adopting the profile, on behalf of the Nordic Trail, and adding some info to the profile so nobody else edits it during the time the profile is reserved for the Explorer to work on.

Communication and regular contact between Explorer the Trail Guide is important. If a Trail Guide has not heard from the Explorer in a while, the Trail Guide might be assigned to another Explorer.

If a Trail Guide think an Explorer need more intensive help, it would be possible to refer an Explorer back to the Nordic Trail Coordinator. Perhaps another Trail Guide can help out or the help from a Mentor is needed before becoming a Nordic Trail Explorer.
