The purpose of this team is:

To gather a group of Nordic Project members who enjoy working on identifying, researching and updating the Nordic profiles that do not have a valid LNAB (Last Name At Birth).

What do members of this team do?

We mainly work on researching Nordic profiles that do not have a known Last Name At Birth, instead the have "Unknown", or any kind of translation of unknown in any of the Nordic languages.

In most cases, at least from 1700 and onwards, it should not be totally impossible to find a correct LNAB but it may take some time. And if a profile truly has not much info at all on it, not even enough to start research, we might be able to identify some profiles that can actually be subject for deletetion.

How to work on Unknown profiles

Use the country specific links below to find a profile to research.

Try to find the correct LNAB for the profile you choose to work on. It should, of course, preferrably have a source that verifies the correct LNAB, especially if it is pre-1700.

However, with the patronymic naming system you can sometimes guess a patronymic without having an actual source, in some rare cases "tradition" might be enough to determine a better LNAB than "Unknown". (Cases like this needs to be discussed further, it will depend on both time period and location.)

If the profile is orphaned, you can then add the source and edit the LNAB and also remove any maintenance category regarding LNAB. You will need to adopt the profile in order to change LNAB (you can then orphan it again).

If the profile is open but has a manager, please add the source to the bio and post a message on the profile asking the manager to change the LNAB. Also add the maintenance category "Category:Country, Needs LNAB Changed" so we can keep track on if it is changed or not.

If the profile is not open, post a message for the manager with your source, ask them to change LNAB of the profile in accordance to the source you found. (We need some way to keep tabs on profiles like this if the manager is not active so the profile can be opened.)

If you found a profile with minimal info that you can not even start to research.... (Perhaps cooperate with gedcom team and see if other family members from same gedcom can be found? We also need a way to report to team leader that this could be a possible candidate for deletion.)

Maintenance category for Swedish Unknowns For "truly unknowns?" who will never have a correct LNAB found? In that case, the maintenance category to work from would be "Category:Country, Needs LNAB".
