Introduction to Guiding an Explorer

As a Guide for the Nordic Project's Nordic Trail, you will be working closely with your assigned Explorers. Your 'volunteer job' is to help them improve their skills, knowledge and understanding of the Nordic Project, Nordic research, and WikiTree as a whole.

Our Explorers are a mix of new members to WikiTree, new members to the Nordic Project, and experienced members. We have developed a two part process that requires our brand new Explorers to complete a minimum of three profiles in the first part, while our more experienced members can jump to Part 2 and are only required to complete two profiles.

Process for Guiding an Explorer: Part 1

You'll receive an email request from the Nordic Trail Project Coordinator asking you to take on a new Explorer.

You then adopt a profile to work on and, on behalf of the Explorer, you add the following image code to the top of the profile:

Nordic Trail Explorer Image
Please Note: A brief message to anyone on the Trusted List explaining what is happening with the profile would be appropriate.
  • Guides will select profiles for Parts 1 and 2.
  • Email 1 advises the Explorer that their place can not be held if they do not respond within 7 days. You should send them a reminder PM on the sixth day. (See PM1)

On the 1800-1899 Orphaned Profiles List, move the link for their selected profile to the Adopted section and note the names of the Guide and Explorer.

You then send an email to your Explorer with a link to the selected profile. See Email 1 at The Nordic Trail Process. Be sure to BCC our Nordic Trail Project Coordinator!

You need to receive a confirmation response from the Explorer within 1 week from the date of the email. If you do not hear from them, please inform the Nordic Trail Project Coordinator so that they can be removed from the waiting list.

Once your Explorer has begun their journey, it is recommended you touch base with them frequently in the beginning. Encourage and support their research efforts by providing a helping hand if needed.

When you receive your Explorer's completed profile, compare against Checklist Level 1 below. Provide your Explorer with constructive feedback and encouragement (as in Email #2 at The Nordic Trail Process). We are helping them improve their skills and knowledge. If you feel their profile meets the checklist requirements, select their next profile and repeat the process again with the second profile, starting at step 2. Repeat for a third profile.

Promote your Explorer to Part 2 and update the Orphaned Profile page to show the profile has been completed. On the 1800-1899 Orphaned Profiles List, move the profile with its link to the Completed section, removing Guide and Explorer names.

Remove the Nordic Trail image from the profile.

Remove yourself from the profile's Trusted List.

Process for Guiding an Explorer: Part 2

You adopt the selected profile and add the following image code to the top of the profile:

Nordic Trail Explorer Image
Please Note: A brief message to anyone on the Trusted List explaining what is happening with the profile would be appropriate.

On the 1700-1799 Orphaned Profiles List, move the link for the selected profile to the Adopted section and note it is in process.

You then send an email to your Explorer with a link to the selected profile. See Email 1 below. Be sure to BCC our Nordic Trail Project Coordinator!

Once your Explorer has begun this level, it is recommended you touch base with them periodically in the beginning. Encourage and support independent research efforts by providing a helping hand if they are stuck.

When you receive your Explorer's completed profile, compare against Checklist Part 1 at The Nordic Trail Process. Provide your Explorer with constructive feedback and encouragement. We are helping them improve their independent research skills and knowledge. If you feel their profile meets the checklist requirements, ask them to select their next profile and repeat the process again with the second profile.

After completing Part 1, whether or not they continue to Part 2, they have earned their Nordic Project Badge. Contact a Project Leader to have the badge awarded, and please advise the WikiTree member ID. A note on the Discord #Nordic-Trail-Guides channel should be answered fairly quickly for this purpose.

  • NOTE: There may be some people not continuing to Part 2, so a Graduate sticker has been created.

... ... ... has completed Part 1 of the Nordic Trail.
  • Additionally, please complete the following steps:
  1. On the Orphaned Profiles List, move the profile with its link to the Completed section, removing Guide and Explorer names.
  2. Remove the Nordic Trail image from the profile.
  3. Remove yourself from the profile's Trusted List.
