What does a Trail Guide do?

The Nordic Trail is mostly self-directed. You, the Trail Guide, will be paired with a new Nordic Project member, called Explorer, to help with any questions they may have, give tips on where to look for sources and provide feedback on the content and presentation of the profiles worked on by the Explorer (chosen by the Coordinator).

As Trail Guides, we are friendly volunteers who like helping our new project members. You should have been through the Trail yourself and be knowledgeable about research and editing profiles from at least one specific Nordic country. You will then be paired with an Explorer who wants to learn to research the same country.

As a Trail Guide, you are not supposed to do the research for the Explorer. The Trail is designed to empower the researcher to do research on their own and to show them how to improve the many Nordic profiles that need some TLC.

If you and your Explorer agree that he/she needs more intensive help with the basics of WikiTree, or they have a disability, help from a Mentor or the Accessibility Angels would perhaps be more appropriate.

What happens if the Explorer does not stay in touch with you or doesn't complete the Trail? It is important that you and the Explorer stay in regular contact. If you have not heard from your Explorer for more than 2 weeks, you should...

a) you may email them to let them know their participation in the Trail has been paused and who to contact when they are ready to resume. Who should the Explorer contact? The Coordinator?

or? and?

b) let the coordinator know so the Explorer's participation in the Trail can be paused (or any other action taken). If they choose to continue at a later stage they may be assigned another Trail Guide than yourself.

(If the Explorer does not resume the Trail within 3 months, we will assume they no longer wish to participate in the Trail and have, for the moment, lost interest in becoming a member of the Nordic Project.)
