Contents

Welcome to the Norfolk Team page!

Team Leader: Andrew Turvey

The Norfolk Team is part of the England Project.

Goal

The goal of the Norfolk Team is to make all Norfolk profiles the best that they can be. It is our desire to leave a lasting legacy of work for future generations and current researchers that can facilitate their quest for family history, and bring them one step closer to discovering the myriad of people it has taken for them to draw breath.

Topics

In order to achieve our goal, there are a number of things we are currently working on:

Gary Bayes is leading the One-Place Study for Hemblington
Heather Lawn is leading the One-Name Study for Larn

If you are interested in helping with Norfolk, please feel free to look at the England Project page and sign up via the G2G post. If you have any questions about Norfok, please contact the team leader above.

Hi Norfolk team

I came across a gedcom with a number of 'Living Yaxley' people in with no dates or locations. I've worked my way through the Gloucestershire profiles and got back to the Yaxley family from Binham in Norfolk. Again there are siblings, some with names and some without but no dates or locations. I did notice you already have over 200 Yaxley's in Norfolk but would it be OK if I mark them unsourced Norfolk and leave them to you. I've spent a couple of days on the Gloucestershire profiles but if you find any more then do mark them up for me in Gloucestershire.

It seemed a bit rude to mark a bunch of profiles with no names, dates or locations as Norfolk unsourced without a little explanation. I've dome some Norfolk Profiles but need to go back to the project I was working on before I found them!

The top of the tree is Ellen Eleanor Pointer (1750-1786). I found some sources for her but her children are a different strory!

Thank you

Alison

Have done a FSP on early Norfolk marriage licences more to do but can be found here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Early_Norfolk_marriage_licences_from_the_Act_books_of_the_Archdeaconry_Court_of_Norfolk_and_the_Consistory_Court More PDFs will be added with images and links. These licenses are not indexed on the NRO site and I came across them by chance. First pdf is for Archdeaconry of Norfolk licences which are scattered in amongst the administrations. Have more to add also ongoing project at the moment.

Hi Norfolk team, I'm just expanding and sourcing some Norfolk Profiles with the surname Stangroom and it seems they were silk and worstead weavers. Do you have any free space pages or info about Norwich Weavers? I've added one so far to the English Weavers category but don't want to duplicate your info. All the best, Alison
That sounds interesting- thanks Alison. I can't see any space pages or categories specifically for Norfolk/Norwich weavers so please go ahead and add them to the English category.

I suspect a tweaking on the error reporting is why you now have less profiles than you did last week. Just in case you were wondering. Probably some exclusions added.

I see there's been a big increase in the stats for unsourced profiles - 224 for Norfolk but I notice some big jumps as well for the other counties in East of England.

However there are only 18 listed in the "new column". Does anyone have any idea what might be driving this?

posted by Andrew Turvey
The increase is common across most England counties. I'm not sure why this is, but wonder if it could be due to a change in how England is defined on Wikitree-plus (eg "Norfolk, England", "Norfolk, Eng", "Norfolk, UK", "Norfolk, Great Britain" are all "Norfolk, England")
posted by Nic Donnelly
Aleš has confirmed that the increase is due to marriage locations being added to the Wikitree-plus search index. So these additional profiles are ones that have "England" in the marriage location field, but not the birth or death location fields.
posted by Nic Donnelly
I've noticed the stats on the Space:Somerset_Team page include the number of profiles. Would it be possible to have this for the Norfolk stats? Would be really useful, although I've no idea whether this is readily available or not.
posted by Andrew Turvey
Added. Let me know if it would be better on the OTHER side of the table, instead of right next to the date.

I noticed the number of unsourced pages has gone up in the last week by 38:

1382↑ (+38)

My guess is that this is due to people finding unsourced pages and tagging them as such, which Data Doctors then duly picks up the next time it does a run, rather than any deterioration in actual quality. However, it could also be from newly created pages. At the same time, people have been working their way through finding sources for unsourced pages which then drop of the list. Is there a way to analyse this variance to understand what's causing the movement?

The simplest analysis would be to ask how many of the 1382 were also included in the 1344 from the week before?

Figures for new additions are displayed in the right column.
posted by [Living Ford]
Ah yes thank you I can see it now - very helpful. So in the last week I can see a net increase of 38, but total new 41 which means someone presumably cleared 3.
posted by Andrew Turvey
I do have an item on my to-do list to create a tool to identify the additions from week to week, but other things have taken priority.

Thanks Chris - that's good to hear. I'm sure this isn't urgent, although it would be a useful indicator to show how much progress (or otherwise) we are actually making.

It may be available on-line (through student or alumni packages) on university databases providing access to the Oxford University Press reference collection...

Hi All

From saturday, 1 February, we are running a month-long "Go Green" challenge.

This will be region vs. region, rather than counties, the winner will be the region with the largest drop in total numbers (sourcing + connecting + suggestions).

All the contributing county team members within the winning region will be given a sticker for their profiles :)

So if you fancy sourcing, connecting or correcting for our region comment below!

Here is a link to the regional data. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England%2C_Regional_and_County_Statistics_Page

If you have any questions just ask :)

Note that you don’t need to sign up if you are already a member of this team. There's something for everyone to do, whether it be sourcing, connecting, or working on suggestions. Also, if you are concentrating on connecting, you may be able to find your county/region of choice on our largest branches page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England%27s_Largest_Unconnected_Branches

We currently have 2610 unsourced pages in Norfolk and I've been having a look through these and chipping away where I can.

However, I've got two questions: first, is there any way to express this as a percentage of the total number of Norfolk pages? I'm not clear if this is 10%, 1%, 0.1% and this might be useful for context.

Second, I'm finding that this number is excluding a lot of pages that are actually unsourced. For instance, Nelson-2675 and Collison-369 were tagged but their children Nelson-2676, Nelson-2701 and Nelson-2677 weren't. Is there any way to have a more clever algo that doesn't rely on a particular tag or category? For instance, text that include < ref > ?

@Chris - I'm seeing a lot of Norfolk, ON. For instance 14 out of 16 Template errors were for men who served in the Norfolk Regiment in the War of 1812. I have also seen a lot of FindAGrave errors. As a rural county in southern Ontario it received a lot of United Empire Loyalist which results in quite a bit of activity.

@Andrew's concern has some legitimacy; if there were pages for Norfolk Island or Norfolk, Ontario their purpose would be clear, it is not immediately obvious that this is Norfolk, a County of England. That said, I can't see anyone getting to this page except via the England Project pages, so I'd say it's a moot point. I was very happy when Ales excluded Norfolk, VA from the Suggestion List, but there are so few suggestions for the other two Norfolks that I didn't think it worth raising.

@Andrew To change this page name would also require renaming all English County Teams, while Norfolk, Ontario is unlikely to have a county level team but rather a provincial team, just as Amy bas suggested that the US teams would be at a state level.

@Gary the report exclusion is not up to the Norfolk Team but is up to Ales, our handy report runner. I am happy to bring up the other Norfolks with him if you would like; following last year's Source-a-Thon and the separate county report pages, Virginia etc. were excluded, so I imagine that it is a solution able to be reached.

@Andrew, I believe that the name is okay because there is not likely to be a team-level page required for the other Norfolks. If it is Australia, it would be the Norfolk Island Team. Virginia? Would be a subset of the Virginia Team of the United States project, and therefore not necessarily likely to have their own team page.

Just my two cents :)

Regards, Amy Utting, England Leader.

@Gary - yes agree there is an improvement possible to the filters to exclude those. But why do you think the page name is ok, given there is more than one Norfolk on wikitree?

I think that the page name is okay. The problem is with the report filters. In addition to excluding location is Massachusetts,MA,Virginia,VA it needs to also exclude location is Ontario,ON,Australia,AU etc.

Should the page name for this team be "Norfolk, England Team", to distinguish from the other Norfolks in the world?
