Origin of Norman

Scandinavian Normans

Norman was a name that some Scandinavian families adopted when emigrating to the United States. The name Norrman may refer to people that are from Norrland - a region in northern Sweden. Vasterbotten is a county that is included in this region of Sweden and where siblings Erick Norman and Isak Norman had lived prior to emigrating to the United States.

Erick and Isak were siblings from a large family of Elias Edman Danielsson and Elisabet Margareta Olofsdotter. While in Sweden, the family continued to use patronymic naming conventions of using the father's first name as a surname variation (Eliasson or Eliasdotter). When Isak and Erick emigrated to the United States in 1891 and 1907 respectively they adopted the surname Norman and settled in Cass County, Minnesota. Both brothers had large families whose descendants span the United States as far west as California and as far east as __? (Wisconsin).Norman-1065 13:04, 22 July 2017 (EDT)

Arizona Normans

The person who was the beginning of the Arizona Norman's was Thomas Franklin Norman. It is unclear if he was born in South Carolina or Alabama. He moved to Missouri, then Texas where he died. His wife and children moved to Oklahoma, settling in Oregon and California. His son, William Houston Norman moved with his wife to Arizona due her health issues with tuberculosis. They founded the Norman Flower Shop and Nurseries and grew their family.
