Contents

Changes for Algeria

  • Aka template set for English There does not appear to be enough Arabic speaking members to support this. It is not necessary for a particular location category to be created in every language.

Locations

  • It appears all the Provincial categories have been added (albeit empty), these will be moved to Algeria, Places [Category to be created]
  • Example: {{Algeria|province=Algiers Province|city=Algiers}}

Changes for Egypt

  • Aka template set for EnglishThere does not appear to be enough Arabic speaking members to support this. It is not necessary for a particular location category to be created in every language.
  • Withdrawn observational comment on action required for history categories (As Egyptian Military History was added to Egyptian History). This will go against the current approved category structure. While this may the be correct format for Location, Topic, this requires a separate approval to proceed since it will impact many countries and projects. See: Category:World History Do take a closer look in that category and also Military History... both versions of "Location Topic" and "Location, Topic" exist, a convention is a convention for a reason...

Renames

  1. Cairo War Cemetery, Al Quahirah, Egypt Al Quahirah is the Sudanese name for Cairo. So the name would be Cairo War Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt

Locations

  • Egypt, Places [category to be created];
    • categories to be created (as required) for the Governorates which form the regions What does 'as needed mean'?
      • The cities (as required) What does 'as needed mean'?
      • Example (existing): {{Egypt|governorate=Alexandria Governorate|city=Alexandria }}
      • Example (existing): {{Egypt|governorate=Cairo Governorate|city=Cairo}}
      • Example (existing): {{Egypt|governorate=Giza Governorate|city=Giza}}
      • Example (existing): {{Egypt|governorate=Luxor Governorate|city=Luxor}}
      • Example (existing): {{Egypt|governorate=Beheira Governorate|city=Rosetta}}
      • Example (existing): {{Egypt|governorate=Matrouh Governorate}} Note: Spelt Matrouh not Matruh

Changes for Libya

  • Aka template set for English and Italian (if required)

There does not appear to be enough Arabic speaking members to support this. It is not necessary for a particular location category to be created in every language.

Locations

  • Top level: Libya, Places [Category to be created].
  • Example:{{Libya|district=Butnan District|city=Tobruk}}

Changes for Morocco

  • Aka template set for English, French and Spanish

There does not appear to be enough Arabic speaking members to support this. It is not necessary for a particular location category to be created in every language.

Missing categories

  1. Spanish Protectorate of Morocco
  2. French Protectorate of Morocco.
  • From 1913, Morocco was split three sectors which lasted until 1956 when the country reunited.

Correction of category naming

  • Tetuan Bay, Morocco. Tetuan Bay is supposed to be written as Tetuán Bay which is located in Tetuán. Tetuán is the Spanish spelling of Tétouan.
  • Tetouan, Morocco. Tetouan is supposed to be written as Tétouan.
    • After the renaming, the alias/aka template needs to be applied. Tetuán is located in Morocco and also in Madrid. The Tetuán Bay, Morocco would be linked to Tétouan via 'es' This location by the way was in the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco (hence the need for the category creation).
  • Moroccan Notables to Morocco, Notables

Locations

  • Addition of Morocco, Places.
    • As of 2015, there are 12 regions,
      • each region is comprised of multiple provinces and prefectures In what naming format? Apparently this was hard to understand, split into a bullet pointed list for extra emphasis and added a mock template for illustration
  • Example:{{Morocco|region=Rabat-Salé-Kénitra|city=Rabat}}

Changes for Sudan

  • Aka template variation for English There does not appear to be enough Arabic speaking members to support this. It is not necessary for a particular location category to be created in every language.

Locations

  • Sudan, Places [category to be created]
    • Sudan is comprised of 18 states.
      • In each state, you then have a number of cities. (The two location categories will get renamed) To what format?Apparently this was hard to understand, split into a bullet pointed list for extra emphasis and added a mock template for illustration
  1. Example:{{Sudan|state=Khartoum|city=Khartoum}}
  2. Example (existing):{{Sudan|state=Red Sea|city=Suakin}}
  3. Example (existing):{{Sudan|state=Red Sea|city=El Teb}}
  4. Example (existing):{{Sudan|state=Red Sea|city=Atbara}} Currently this exists as Atbara, Egypt which is incorrect

Changes for Sultanate of Darfur

  • There is a military history category, this should be under a category of Sultanate of Darfur (to be created).
    • This category should be listed under the resulting 5 Darfur State categories. (or vice versa, whichever is the appropriate form!)

Changes for Tunisia

  • Aka template set for English and French There does not appear to be enough Arabic speaking members to support this. It is not necessary for a particular location category to be created in every language.

Locations

  • First of the Tunisia, Places [category to be created].
    • Inside this category, would be 24 governorates
      • Inside these governorates is where these existing location categories will get moved to To what format?Apparently this was hard to understand, split into a bullet pointed list for extra emphasis and added a mock template for illustration
  1. Example:{{Tunisia|governorate=Tunis|city=Tunis}}
  2. Example (existing):{{Tunisia|governorate=Tunis Governorate|city=Carthage}}
  3. Example (existing):{{Tunisia|governorate=Béja Governorate|city=Medjez el Bab}}

Changes for Former Countries in Africa

  • Sultanate of Darfur is placed here as it no longer exists
  • Spanish Protectorate in Morocco is placed here as it no longer exists
  • French Protectorate in Morocco is placed here as it no longer exists

I agree with Steve's assessment that that aka does not need to be applied right away. WikiTree really does not have many speakers of Arabic, so that need not be done. Part of the categorization plan is to map the naming scheme. Recommend using the same scheme for all countries, just to be consistent. Also, what sort of records are available and how many profiles could be added? Right now, Sudan has three profiles using two locations. It'd be better to create the naming scheme to use when you need it. (Perhaps a reference page with the future categories in a list including the major cities using the link method [:Category:Port Sudan, Red Sea] and then when you need them, they're there for reference.) Or just create the state capital cities and leave the rest in a list. You really don't want a bunch of categories sitting there with no profiles in them. It looks like most of the profiles in any of these countries are in war cemeteries, so really, that's the bulk of your profiles at present. Also, I recommend that you run this by Emma McBeath, the leader of the Africa Project. She said, in your categorization post, "Since I'm the leader of the Africa Project, I'm also the liaison for the African categories. It would be good if you and I hammered some of this out together before proposing big changes here. " You should probably add her to the TL of this page.

WikiTree has nothing in Arabic. It's that simple. This isn't just looking at the 'here and now' but also the big picture down the track. It's looking at the convention for location naming, what you are suggesting is ignoring how they have their structure and impose our own inaccurate interpretation because of preferring a uniform application.

The whole reason I haven't updated the thread in the Categorization group is because I've been awaiting peer assessment by the Africa Project.
