Cayuga County, New York
Cayuga County 1853 |
These maps reflect the land transactions that tell us where our ancestors lived in the northern portion of Cayuga County. Cayuga County is located in the central part of New York State, and is bordered on the east by Onondaga County. Why did these ancestors settle here? There was a surge of western migration through New York after the Revolutionary War. It is likely that they traveled the Mohawk Trail west to it's terminus near Utica and then continued west on the Great Genesee Road and Seneca Turnpike. Did they stop because the travel was difficult, they were now in the wilderness, and they were weary of caring for young children? Did they find the gently rolling hills and fertile farmland attractive? Did they hear of the miserable Montezuma Swamp with its mosquitos and malaria just to the west? After they had remained for a while, did they find the opening of the Erie Canal advantageous to shipping and receiving goods? Although we can no longer ask our ancestors, their land transactions and the corresponding maps tell stories about where they, and their neighbors, lived.
Towns and Lots
Cayuga County 1829 Towns and Lots |
Cayuga County was part of the Onondaga Military Tract, set aside for payment of land bounties to Revolutionary War soldiers. By 3 Jul 1790 the county was surveyed in 26 towns, all given classical names by a clerk in the surveyor's office. Each township was to be six miles square with 156 lots of 150 acres each, and to contain 60,000 acres.[1][2] In deed records, the term States Hundred refers to the 6 lots in each township reserved for public purposes such as churches and schools
The Town of Aurelius was formed on 27 January 1789. It was enlarged on 5 March 1794 to include Brutus, Cato and Mentz. The town of Cato was formed 30 March 1802, comprised of all land north of the Seneca River within the county borders. Sterling was formed from Cato 19 Jun 1812. Conquest, Victory and Ira were formed from Cato 16 March 1821.[3] To compensate for the large areas of swamp lands in Cato, the southeast corner of Ira was re-annexed to Cato in 1824.[4] The 1875 map shows the line between the original towns of Cato and Brutus. The town of Sennett was created from Brutus on 19 March 1827.[1]
Cayuga County borders Onondaga County on the east. Towns in Cayuga from north to south: Ira, Cato, Brutus, Sennett. Towns in Onondaga from north to south: Lysander, Elbridge (formerly Camillus), Skaneateles (formerly Marcellus).

Cayuga County, Town of Cato, 1853 |
Who was living in on lots 100, 11, 22 and 33 in the town of Cato?
Did they use the ferry operated by Solomon Woodworth to travel to the Village of Jordan for trade and commerce?
Jonathan Shores and his wife owned property on lot 33 in Cato, although they appear in the town of Ira in census records.
Jacob David Putman and his family were in the area by 1839, with land on lots 100, 11, 22, and 33. It appears likely that the land on lot 33 was very close (or the same as) that owned by Jonathan Shores. Jacob's descendants remained in the area; his son Sebastian moved to the nearby Village of Jordan after retiring from farming. On 9 Apr 1852 Jacob D Putnam sold the land for School #9 on lot 22 via a quit claim deed.
From the maps, it appears that the Putman lived along the Cato/Jordan Plank Road.
Who Remained in 1875?
