Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery

The cemetery serves as a place of rest and reflection where eligible veterans, their spouses and eligible dependents are remembered and honored in perpetuum

The cemetery is 35 miles east of Reno and is adjacent to Interstate 80, in Fernley, Nevada. Right below the mountains of the Northern Nevada Trinity Mountain Range sits the 43 acre cemetery.

Northern end of the Columbarium

All buildings and monuments are ADA accessible with ramps leading to the main flag, the POW-MIA flag and the State of Nevada flag at the northern end of the columbarium.

The Northern Nevada Memorial Cemetery is the first Memorial Cemetery in Nevada to test the long term feasibility of a polymer material embedded within the soil for capturing and retaining moisture by limiting water evaporation in dry arid environments.

History

In 1978, Congress established the State Cemetery Grants Program (Public Law 95-476), Nevada approved for 2 (Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery & Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

42,964 veterans and family members are interred in one of the two cemeteries as of December 2014.

Each Memorial Day, fallen soldiers are honored. The remains of sixteen unclaimed veterans were interred in the cemetery and a ceremony honoring them was held.

Ret Lieutenant General Martin Louis Brandtner was born on 3 Jul 1938 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States, the son of Alex Peter and Ida Marie (Kjelstad) Brandtner. General Brandtner passed away on 3 Jan 2017 in Reno, Washoe, Nevada at the age of 78.
