Mississippi Plantations

The history of Northumberland begins with Charles Percy, a British army veteran, who named his plantation, Northumberland Place. It is connected to the later named plantation, Edgefield, by its last owner, Josiah Clinton Patrick, sometime after his wife, Eliza (Chinn) Connell inherited the property from her deceased husband, John Connell (aft.1790-abt.1831), perhaps as late as 1843.

In 1777 Charles Percy was awarded 600 acres by Peter Chester, the governor of British West Florida, on the right bank of Bayou Sara, near a settlement later called St Francisville, not far from the border that later separated the future American states of Mississippi and Louisiana.

Through his marriage to Susannah (Collins) Percy, he acquired more property near Opelousas, St. Landry Parish. He eventually came to hold three plantations:

  1. Abluses in St. Francisville (Louisiana) on Bayou Sara.
  2. A plantation in Opelousas, Louisiana
  3. Northumberland House, on Buffalo Creek, where he resided. It was fifteen or so miles below Natchez, in the future Mississippi County of Wilkinson. A small portion of Percy’s Wilkinson County lands included the site that would later be called Edgefield Plantation, on Wayside Road in Woodville.

Chronology of Events

1794 - Charles Percy's estate was inventoried with 59 enslaved people.
1804 - After Susannah (Collins) Percy's death, the estate was inventoried with 79 enslaved people.
1808 - The estate was divided up among his 4 surviving children:

  1. Sarah Percy Ellis, who inherited 20 enslaved people. When Sarahs' husband John Ellis (abt.1760-abt.1808) died in 1808, his property, which included 159 enslaved people was divided into 3 parts. The final division of the estate was recorded on Dec. 7, 1815. Therefore, Nathaniel A. Ware, Sarah's second husband, became the owner of Northumberland plantation.
  2. Thomas Percy
  3. Catharine Percy Brown
  4. Susannah Percy

~1830 - Nathaniel Ware sold Northumberland and the enslaved families to John Connell (-1831).

1831 - The inventory of John Connell, deceased, was made on 10 Jan 1843. Josiah C. Patrick became guardian of the heir, John P.Connell.[1]

Slaves

There may have been as many as 400 people enslaved at this plantation from 1777 until 1865, which includes those held by Josiah Clinton Patrick. One-hundred and fifteen of the people named below were enslaved by others at the plantation later named by J C Patrick.
