About Cricket
Cricket is one of many games in the "club ball" sphere that basically involve hitting a ball with a hand-held implement. A key distinction is the existence of a solid target structure, the wicket that the batter must defend.
It is generally believed that cricket originated as a children's game in the south-eastern counties of England, sometime during the medieval period. The original implements included a matted lump of sheep’s wool (or even a stone or wood) as the ball, a stick or farm tool as the bat, and a stool or tree stump as the wicket. Adults increasingly embraced the game around the early 17th century and by the 18th century it had become an established sport. International matches have been played since the 19th century, and today cricket is the world’s second most popular spectator sport after association football (soccer).
