About Tennis
Most historians believe that tennis originated in the monastic cloisters in northern France in the 12th century, but the ball was then struck with the palm of the hand. It was not until the 16th century that rackets came into use and the game began to be called 'tennis'.
In 1913, twelve national tennis associations agree to form the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF), which was renamed the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in 1977. Currently, there are 213 national and regional associations which make up the ITF's membership.
The four Grand Slam tournaments of the tennis circuit, are Wimbledon (1877), the US Open (1881), the French Open (1891), and the Australian Open (1905). Since the mid-1920s these four tournaments have been viewed as the most prestigious events in tennis. Winning these four tournaments in the same year is called the Calendar Grand Slam.
