Research

As of 9 Feb 2021, there is no documentation for this person, only hints.

  • In 1979, Clark Moyer said there was a legend passed down that the Moyers had a Native American Ancestor. Ivey (Kramer) Moyer's wedding picture tucked away in the closet to digitalize shows she is a strong candidate for that small thread present in my genes.
  • Posted is the demise of the Sasquehannock Tribe in her daughter, Nancy Owen's profile. But who raised her in York? There was a large Quaker community in York at that time that was actively evangelizing what was left of the indigenous population.
  • William was a dedicated family man who legitimized Nancy as she's listed as one of his Virginia family, while living in Pennsylvania.
  • Nancy married John Owens a Welshman who was also living in York. Nancy and John became one of the foundational settlers of Central Pennsylvania who had many children.
  • One of William's son's middle name is Smiley which perhaps only by chance was the maiden name for a contemporary family member in my father's tree. They also named their next to the last daughter Nancy

It may take time, but some how there's a way to satisfy the most rabid European curiosity. But I'd say there's a story not a date here which could be fun as well. If you are a descendant of Nancy and John Owen, I am looking for Native American markers. We can triangulate our results.

DNA Identification

  • My contention is that This ancestor is Native American
I have no other Native Americans in my ancestry
This would make my percentage 1/128 or .7%

Alleles that are indicative of Native American ancestry.

This test analyses 2,581 SNPs.[1]
Number of SNPs (genetic markers) that we looked for: 2,581
Number of SNPs found and analysed: 83

If your raw data file is lacking certain SNPs, due to a no call from your test or because your test provider does not cover those SNPs, (they do not record your entire genome, only relevant markers for their algorithms) you may be missing some of our reports.

Amanda, Seven isolated SNP's are not conclusive of any native American ancestry whatsoever, much less a specific person seven generations back. Relying on these seven SNP's a family tradition of native ancestry (who doesn't have that) and then attempting to eliminate your 127 other ancestors at this generation to conclude that Nancy Owens's mother must have been an unknown and undocumented Susquehannock Amerindian is not genealogy.

I removed her as a spouse of John Owens since there is no contention that he married this hypothetical woman. But absent better evidence she should be either merged with Mrs. Gillespie or disconnected and tagged with Disproven/Uncertain existence.

N.B., the consumer state of the art for testing native American ancestry would be the percentage shown in AncestryDNA or 23andme's admixture reports. This requires analysis of DNA segments including numerous SNP's in each segment against their database, not just a handful of cherry-picked SNP's. More than 0.5% reported native American ancestry from these providers is likely to be reliable as real native ancestry, but it won't tell you where in your tree it lies. Also seven generations back you have ancestors that you do not inherit any DNA at all from, as their DNA is completely lost in the shuffle between those generations. On average each ancestor at that generation contributes about 0.8% of your DNA, but it could end up being anywhere from 0-3% (or even more).

Before I opened this profile, I asked someone conversant with DNA in wiki if there was enough reason to believe this was a possibility and he said absolutely.

Now, I wish there was some team at play here where I could play a part but there's not. I'm not sure how many times I have to say I am NOT thinking I've proven ANYTHING - I haven't - thus the large capitalized words RESEARCH. THAT'S why I never wrote a biography here. Until I could get past the COULDS or MAYBES to get a hypothesis, biographies are silly. All I'm doing is storing information for reference.

Jillian left a model for the parentage of a couple of children with a married european man and a native american woman. In that model, they found NO trace of Native American ANYWHERE. There SOMETHING here. It can't be entirely discounted. That doesn't mean its supposed to be some Magna Carta.

I'm leaving her off for now because the profile is such a mess. I'm not sure at this point how to target her better than what I"ve done here.

Nathan Kennedy's reponse

Amanda, I'm having trouble following you. I believe you reference Jillaine Smith's comment where she gave an example of another profile for a fabled native American woman, but are contrasting that to this profile where "There SOMETHING here. It can't be entirely discounted." What is this other than your 7 SNP's, your uncle Clark's legend that his family had native ancestry, and your perception of your grandmother's ethnicity from her photograph? That is not sufficient to connect your 4th-great-grandmother to an unsourced inferred native ancestor. This profile should be merged. If you want to have a profile to represent a hypothetical unknown Native American ancestor, I'm not sure that's appropriate; that would be better for your profile or a Space; but this profile should definitely be disconnected in that case.

There are at least half a dozen other active WikiTreers who are also descended from Nancy Owens alone. We all need to do our best to collaborate and abide by the WikiTree Honor Code (I. collaborate; II. care about accuracy; VIII. cite sources).

I took it off as I felt this whole problem was my misunderstanding

As much as I thought I understood something and apparently didn't Best to just take it off and leave it alone and work on it in private. That's fine.
