Nyköping Municipality (Nyköpings kommun) is a municipality in Södermanland County in southeast Sweden.

The municipality was created in 1971 with the amalgamation of the City of Nyköping and a great number of other municipalities. It was split up in three parts in 1992, when Gnesta Municipality and Trosa Municipality were created.

Nyköpings municipality is 1 421 sq.km. big and in 2014 the population was 53 038.[1]

History
In 1863 the Town of Nyköping formed the town municipality of Nyköping. The surrounding parishes had formed country municipalities and in 1950 Nikolai country municipality was devided when Oxelösund town broke loose and the rest joined Nyköping town municipality.

The municipality reform in 1952 led to two new municpalities Jönåker and Rönö when several small country municipalities were merged.

Svärta country municipality joined Nyköping in 1967 and in the reform of 1971 Nyköping Municipality was formed by merging the municipalities of Nyköping, Jönåker, Rönö, Stigtomta, Tysteberga, Tunaberg and parts of Bettna. In 1974 the municipalities of Trosa, Vagnhärad, Daga and Gnesta joined Nyköping municipality only to break loose and form the municipalities of Gnesta and Trosa in 1992.
