Map of Oak Hill |
In 1818, six hardy Welsh families from the Cilcennin area set sail from the Aberaeron Wales to the United States. They then set out for Paddy’s Run near Cincinnati but had to stop at Gallopolis, Ohio for provisions. A storm had caused their rafts to float away during the night and they decided not to travel on down the Ohio River. Some of the Welsh stayed in Gallopolis. Others moved down the road and settled in what is today Oak Hill, Ohio . In 1839, another wave of Welsh immigration moved into the area and Oak Hill still remains a majority Welsh settlement.
