Oakland Plantation
Richard Croom (1805-1859) owned Oakland Plantation in Leon County, Florida. He and his wife, Winifred Bryan (Whitfield) Croom, however, lived in Sumter County, Alabama, where they also owned slaves. Oakland bordered the La Grange Plantation, Leon County, Florida owned by Richard's brother, Bryan Croom.[1]
In the 1850 Leon County Tax Roll and Agricultural Census, Richard reportedly owned 65 slaves. The plantation produced 400 bales of cotton that year.[2] However, the 1850 Slave Schedule Census indicated he owned 81.[3]
