About the Cemetery
The Ohaupo Catholic cemetery is a small private cemetery located on the on the site of the former St Finbarr church and has become the Hamilton Diocesan Cemetery. The St Finbarr church building was disposed of after St Michael the Archangel church building was built and put into use. St Michael the Archangel was opened in 1916.
According to the Catholic News, on February 17, 1982, the adjacent land was purchased in order to increase the size so that it could become the burial ground for priests of the diocese as well as for local Catholics. [1]
Originally Ohaupo had a thriving Catholic population, with a base of Bohemian and Irish settlers making up the parishioners.
In 1982, the Catholic population of Ohaupo was about 400. In 2017 there would be no more than half-a-dozen. In 2013, the general population of Ohaupo was 519. With a diminishing Catholic community and a shortage of priests, regular Masses in Ohaupo ceased in the 1990s, and shifted to monthly at St Michael's.
St Michael's was decommissioned in about February 2017, and the land and buildings are to be sold. The intended fate of the Ohaupo Catholic Cemetery is unknown.
