Background

Australia was one of the 14 nations to compete at the 1st modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Australia has competed in every Summer Olympic Games. In the games in 1908 and 1912, Australia competed in a combined team with New Zealand (Australasia). Australia has competed in every Winter Games, except for the games between 1924-1932 and 1948. Australia has been most dominant in swimming, winning a total of 212 medals.^[1]
