Olympics-Team Bulgaria

Bulgaria was one of the 14 nations to compete at the 1st modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens, Greece. However, the 5 Bulgarian athletes that were sent to the Olympics arrived late and could not compete, due to a misunderstanding over the use of the Gregorian and the Julian Calendars. A Swiss national who was working in Bulgaria in 1896, Charles Champaud, represented Bulgaria at the games, and thus became the first Bulgarian Olympian.^[1] The Bulgarian Olympic Committee was created in 1923 and sent the first Bulgarian team to the Olympics in 1924. Bulgaria has competed in all the Summer Games since 1924 except for 1932, 1948, and 1984. Bulgaria's first appearance at the Winter Games was in 1936 and has competed in every Winter Games since then.^[2] Bulgaria has won a total of 230 medals, including 55 gold medals. Their athletes have been the most dominant in wrestling and weightlifting.^[3]
