Olympics - Team Chinese Taipei
Background
The first Chinese Olympic Committee was formed in 1910 and recognized in 1922. China competed at the Olympic Games of 1932, 1936, and 1948.
In September 1949, Chinese Communists assumed control of the government, and many of the former rulers escaped to the island province of Taiwan, including many former members of the Chinese Olympic Committee (possibly as many as 19 of 26).
The National Olympic Committee (NOC) was formed in 1949 by members of the mainland Chinese committee who had fled to the island. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) official policy at this time was that the mainland Chinese Olympic Committee had simply changed its address and was now located on the island of Taiwan. For many years thereafter, the country was embroiled in a dispute with mainland China over recognition by the IOC
Thus, began a 40-year political problem for the IOC: the question of the “two Chinas”. This resulted in various boycotts over the years.
Chinese Taipei (under the name of the Republic of China) first competed at the Olympic Games in 1956, and since then has taken part at every Olympics with the exception of 1976 and 1980. It has competed in 14 Olympic Games under various names – the Republic of China (1956), Taiwan/Formosa (1960), Taiwan (1964-1972), and Chinese Taipei (1984 onwards). [1]
This is an ongoing project to ensure that all Olympians who represented Chinese Taipei are on Wikitree.
