Oneida County was created in 1798 from a part of Herkimer County. At that time it was much larger than it is today, Jefferson and Lewis Counties were created in 1805 from the northern portion of Oneida County. Then in 1816, parts of Oneida and Onondaga Counties were taken to create Oswego County[1].
The county seat is Utica. The name is in honor of the Oneida, an Iroquoian tribe that lives in the region. Oneida County is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area.
