Orchard Pond Plantation

Orchard Pond, owned by Richard Keith Call (abt.1792-abt.1862), is located between Lake Jackson and the Ochlockonee River in northwestern Leon County, Florida. It originally consisted of 8754 acres. By 1860 it consisted of 1300 worked acres, and 2544 acres of unimproved land. It was valued at $31,000. The main crops were corn and cotton.[1]

Slave Owners

Slaves at the Lake Jackson-Orchard Pond Plantation at the Time of Probate

Richard K. Call's estate inventory calls his plantation the Lake Jackson Plantation in his probate papers.[2] [3][4] [3]

Richard's will called for a division of the approximately 194 enslaved persons between his two daughters:

Mrs T. W. Brevard, Schedule "A", received 97 enslaved persons from the Lake Jackson Plantation (Orchard Pond Plantation).[5]

Mrs Ellen C. Long, Schedule "B", received 97 enslaved persons.[6] The following 65 enslaved persons "were conveyed to Mrs. Long in lifetime of Gen C." (and were probably at the Grove Plantation with Mrs. Ellen Long at this time.)[7]

New allotment, probably from the Orchard Pond Plantation.[7]

1850 Census

In 1850 Richard Call had 143 enslaved persons at his plantation[9][10] and 75 enslaved persons at a second location (The Grove?).[11][12]
