Meaning of the name
In order to understand the name "Kiedaisch", you have to be able to speak the Swabian dialect. "Kie" is the plural of "Kuh", meaning "cows". "Daisch" is an ancient word for dung that also occurs in other names, e.g. "Deuschle". Together, Kie + Daisch means cow dung. It's a farmer's name, obviously.
From the spelling variants such as "Küetaisch", "Küöteisch" and the like, which the pastor used by ear, one can see that the name would have to be correctly pronounced Swabian, i.e. with "ie" not as a long "ih", but as impure "ia", in which the e sounds weakly but clearly as its own sound. For Germans who are not able to speak Swabian, this is inexpressible. So the pronunciation with a long "ih" prevailed. For English speakers, it's even more complicated. Emigrants to the USA therefore partially adapted the spelling, e.g. to "Keydash".
Earliest occurrence
All of the Kiedaisch lines that I have researched so far can be traced back to a married couple Jakob and Elisabeth Kiedaisch in Weilheim / Teck. The church registers begin there in 1558, so it is not so easy to venture further into the past here. However, evaluations of telephone books show that this area has the highest density of Kiedaisch households. So one can assume that the name has its origin here.
Tasks
Your support is very welcome if you know or can even evaluate documents that are older than 1560 and in which the name "Kiedaisch" occurs. Collaboration is also welcome if you follow the Kiedaisch lines as far back as possible to see whether they can also connect with this first parent couple, or whether there are still independent lines.
