Original 46 Purchasers of Taunton
The Cohannet Purchase was a major (if not first) purchase of land from Massasoit, the sachem of the Wampanoags, who claimed the territory. Other purchases would be added to the Taunton settlement.
The following 46 were the original purchasers of Taunton in 1637 or 1638 (the exact date is not known as the original deed was destroyed but 1638 was stated in a later replica from Massasoit's son, Philip). There were a total of 424 shares and all but Mr. John Browne owned from 6 to 12 shares each.
