Goals

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Task List

This is a place to post your Orr family lines to see how we are all connected.

Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • Orr migration from Scotland to Northern Ireland in the 1600's.
  • History of the Orr name and relationship to various clans.
  • DNA in the Orr's.
  • Meaning of the Orr surname, geographical origin of the Orr surname, Orr veterans, famous Orr family members

Please post any questions or other items of interest!

If anyone is looking for the Orr families in/near Ballyblack, Ards, Down, NI, who were early Scots arrivals in the 1600s, there is great information in the Montgomery Manuscripts.

https://archive.org/details/montgomerymanusc00montuoft/page/144/mode/2up?q=Orr

I discovered them while searching for my own Scots-Irish ancestors. The female descendants of James and wife Janet M'Clement of Ballyblack married into the Jamieson, Martin and Piper families which are 3 of my ancestral surnames.

Hello!

I am interested in joining the Orr name group. My 3rd g-grandfather James Orr emigrated to Saint John, New Brunswick sometime before 1842 when he married Ellen MacDonald in Saint John. Family lore is that he had 2 brothers, one of whom travelled further west into Canada and the other went to the US. We don't know if he came from Ireland or Scotland. Records in Saint John were destroyed in the Great Fire of 1877 so I am at a loss. My dad's DNA is part of the Orr Family Tree DNA project.

A Roy, The Ulster Pedigree has our ancestor, James Orr emigrating to the Ulster Plantation with his wife, janet McClement, in 1608. If you will go on to the Ulster Pedigrees, you can trace your ancestors.

Welcome. Dennis

Hi - I would like to join the Orr Name Study. As you can see I am an Orr, it’s my maiden name. I can trace my Orr line back to only my 2nd great grandfather, Thomas Orr, grocer in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland, who died on 29 Dec 1841. I’d love to be able to trace it back further.

Family TreeDNA has an Orr Group that is exploring the DNA relationships among the various Orr members. The primary DNA (simplified) is R1a and then we have various branches. David K. Orr is leading the group and uncovering many fascinating Orr relationships.

I'm the descendant of a group of Orrs who emigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1853 (after converting to Mormonism). Happy to help out with this project, if I can.

One rumor about the Orr name said it goes back to the 5th Century and is one of the oldest names in Scotland. Another is an Orr came over with Erik the Red circa 1000 A.D.
