About the Project

The Ostermann Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Ostermann name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Ostermann name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Ostermann's), by time period (18th Century Ostermann's), or by topic (Ostermann DNA, Ostermann Occupations, Ostermann Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

General Info on Ostermann

According to Forebears, the family name Ostermann „is derived from the Swedish, German and Ashenazic words oster/öster, meaning 'east', and mann/man, meaning 'man'.“

The name is mostly found in Europe, where 88 percent of Ostermann are found. It also occurs in The United States, where 8 percent reside.

According to Kroiß (2023), the earliest mention of the name (in its variant Osterman) was in 1389 in Lüneburg, Germany.[1]

The distribution of the name Ostermann spread in Germany from

  • in 1890: a broad band between Hamburg and Cologne, with smaller pockets in Palatinate, Alsace, Thuringia, and the lower Oder river, to
  • in 1996: widespread cluster bands throughout West Germany, from Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Lower Saxony in the North, via Northrhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate in the middle, to Saarland, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria in the South, plus a strong cluster in Berlin.[2]

Of the original six goals at the start of the ONS, the following three can still be considered a priority:

The other three original goals have been reached to a certain extent, and it could be considered secondary priority to expand on them now:

  • Create categorization structure
  • Create Ostermann research pages by country, like in Alexandra‘s exemplary Geisinger Name Study
  • Tag all Ostermann profiles on WikiTree with Ostermann Name Study sticker
