About the Project

The Ostrander Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Ostrander name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Ostrander name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Ostranders), by time period (18th Century Ostranders), or by topic (Ostrander DNA, Ostrander Occupations, Ostrander Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

How to Join

To join the Ostrander Name Study, first start out by browsing our current research pages to see if there is a specific study ongoing that fits your interests. If so, feel free to add your name to the Membership list below, post an introduction comment on the specific team page, and then dive right in!

Goals

The Goals of this study are to:

• Gather everything about the surname Ostrander and its variants into one place which will provide an indexed resource for those researching the family lines.
• Compare and Merge duplicated profiles and identifying the reasons why (i.e.: Spelling variations, etc) the duplicate was created.
• Resolve family line issues caused by incorrect sources
• Connect all WikiTree profiles with the surname of Ostrander or one of its variants to the worldwide tree
• Add Sources to all profiles that are currently unsourced or improperly sourced
• Cleanup of biographies, writing clean narratives, and eliminating GEDCOM clutter. Please put in the biographies the main profile that did upload the GEDCOM. They have the right to be recognized for their hard work prior to us adding or taking information.
• Share stories, pictures, etc to enrich our common ancestry and to get to know each other

Profile Categorization

As you encounter profiles with the surname Ostrander or any of its variants, please add the appropriate Ostrander Name Study category to the ancestral profile.

If you know which branch the Ostrander profile belongs to, please label it with the appropriate branch. See:

If there are children that come from two different branches of Ostranders, please try and follow this categorization method. If "John Ostrander" from the Pieter Branch married "Jane Ostrander" from the Theunis Branch, then this is what needs to show up on the categorization:

This allows for the female line of Ostrander to be recognized and continue in the appropriate manner.
