When Joseph E. Owens was born on August 7, 1846, in Cherokee, Georgia, his father, Elijah, was 59 and his mother, Isabella, was 18. He married Artimissa Rhyne and they had three children together. He also had two sons with Fannie M Owen. He died on December 4, 1926, in Berrien, Georgia, at the age of 80, and was buried in Tift, Georgia.
