Creating the Slave Owner Profile
In this track you will need to do research before creating the profile.
Review and use this page Documenting Enslaved People in WikiTree to help you with the following exercises.
EXERCISE #1
Time given to complete: 48 hours
In this first exercise you will be working from a Slave Schedule that has UN-named enslaved persons.
- From the USBH Heritage Exchange, Needs Slave Owner Profile category, choose a slave owner from one of the Slave schedules to research. Suggestion - Pick a name to research that is not very common.
- Search WikiTree to make sure the profile has not been created.
- In order to create the profile you will need to find genealogical information that IS NOT located on the slave schedule: i.e. Birthdate and location of slave owner, as well as, the location where the enslaved were held (refer to slave schedule).
- You will create a ===Slaves=== heading at the end of the Biography section where you will add the description and citation to the list of enslaved, OR, if 10 or less, you may list them as described.
- Add the source of the Slave Schedule
- You will add Slave and USBH categories.
If you have any questions, reach out to your Guide. When you have completed this profile, send the URL of the profile to your Guide and ask for a review.
EXERCISE #2a Heritage Exchange Set
Time given to complete: 48 hours
In this exercise you will create a Slave owner/Named slave set.
You will research another slave owner to find NAMED enslaved people. They will be found in a Will or an Inventory, a deed of sale, a runaway ad. If you are having trouble finding a set, ask your Guide for help.
Procedure Slave Owner Profile
- Create the slave owner profile.
- Add the Slaves heading and list the named enslaved along with any other information from the source, such as age (or year of birth), Valuation, and any clearly defined family groupings, (i.e. Eliza, daughter of Betty).
- Add the source information.
- Remember categories.
EXERCISE #2b Review this page Documenting Enslaved People and follow the instructions.

EXERCISE #3 - Creating the Slave Owner Documentation page (Free Space Page)
Time given to complete: 48 hours
In this exercise you will create a "Slaves of" page for a slave owner who held 10 or more enslaved people.
- From this category USBH Heritage Exchange, Needs Space Page category choose a profile that needs a space page
- From the Add drop down menu choose "Add New Free-Space"
- Create the page name. Ex: Slaves of John Doe, South Carolina DO NOT ALTERNATE from this style.
- Add the Sources/references headings, as they are not automatically added on these pages.
- Be sure to save this page regularly as a "Failed Token" sometimes happens if you leave it unsaved for a period of time. If this happens, FULL SAVE.
