Location: Focusing on Pit(t)ma(o)n families currently found in the UK, tracing migration routes to the USA/Canada, Australia, New Zealand, S. Africa
Surnames/tags: Pittman Pitman Pyteman
This is a multi-decade ongoing project open to all males with the surname Pittman, Pitman, Pyteman (and variations). The Project is funded by volunteers and uses DNA testing to increase what is known about Pittman lineages, 16th century to present.
We are primarily a Y-DNA project and use the Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) platform. Y-DNA is the patrilineal DNA, passed only from father to son. Some of our project participants do not have Y-DNA test results, though they have a Pittman ancestor, so we also can use autosomal DNA (atDNA), which is inherited from both parents. In addition to FTDNA, many of our participants have atDNA results through Ancestry and 23&Me.
The project is designed to find common ancestors among the distinct branches of Pittman, Pitman, Pittmon (and variations) families worldwide. Our research typically focuses on Pit(t)ma(o)n families currently found in the UK, tracing migration routes to the USA/Canada, Australia, New Zealand, S. Africa and other diaspora, as well as Pittman genealogies found within these countries. This is the pattern for most of the participants to date.
My name is Dan Pittman (Pittman-3885), I founded the Project in March 2004. Today, with 4 other co-administrators, we analyze Pittman DNA results and develop a relatedness chart of all those who have tested at the 'Y' 700 (marker) level. Currently this project 399 members.
If you have questions about the Pittman DNA Project and how it can help in your Pittman research, contact:
- Dan Pittman (Pittman-3885)
- Jef Treece (Treece-72)
For the family history genealogist, genetic links between Pittmans - wherever they now live - will bridge the gaps caused by lost records. If you are a beginner, a test may help you find your particular Pittman bloodline, simplifying your research task.
