INDUSTRY
- Ochiltree was historically a rural parish, so its main industry was farming (agricultural and grazing). There was very little industry existing until the arrival of large scale coal-mining.
- snuff boxes were manufactured in Ochiltree, but this commercial industry was dominated by the makers in both Cumnock, and Mauchline. Some box makers were –
- Hugh Kay,
- John Murdoch,
- Alexander Murdoch**, and
- Mungo Peden.
- Note** Alexander Murdoch appeared to take on many trades. He is listed in the 1837 Directory as: a grocer, spirit dealer, and snuff box maker.[2]
