Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s

Index to passengers who arrived in United States and Canadian ports from the 1500s through the 1900s. "An excellent index of over 4,588,000 names found in more than 2,500 published sources... 15 vols. This is an index of published passenger lists, as well as other published sources, primary and secondary, which indicate the arrival or earliest presence of an immigrant in America at a particular place and time.[1] The first three volumes are a combined alphabetical index printed in 1981. Supplemental volumes have been issued annually."[2]

Footnotes

  1. Introduction, 1994 Supplement, p. xi:
PILI does not index passenger lists only. Naturalization lists and other publications where immigration to the New World can be determined to have occurred are indexed as well. . . . The date and place appearing in PILI do not necessarily equate to the date and port of arrival. Locations referred to in some sources are in fact sometimes destinations, locations of settlement, or the particular location of the immigrant on the date cited.

Hi Rick, do you know where I might find records of those who returned to England from Virginia in the early to mid-1600s? Thanks!

No, I don't. You may want to ask in G2G. Someone else may know.

Okay, I thought I'd ask you first and then if no success use G2G. Thanks for all of your help!

How do I see the original records? I have an ancestry.com subscription but am only finding the brief transcribed description for individuals. I'm particularly looking for Mackay arriving in Virginia 1635. Thanks!

This source is just an index. If you find the specific "Mackay" you are looking for, it should give you the source of the information. As an example:

Name: Melashus Mackay, Arrival year: 1635, Arrival Place: Virginia. Source Bibliography: DOBSON, DAVID. The Scottish Surnames of Colonial America. Baltimore: Clearfield Co., 2003. As explained on the ancestry.com web site, "original records" where not usually kept at the time.

Thanks Rick. I had already understood what you wrote: just an index, see bibliography; but appreciate your reply.
