Battle of King's Mountain
In the 7 October 1780 Battle of King's Mountain, the victorious patriots suffered only 95 casualties: 26 killed, 7 mortally wounded, and 62 wounded.[1]
The information on this page - including the numbers adding to 95 casualties - was abstracted from J.D. Lewis's excellent presentation, "The Known Patriots at the Battle of Kings Mountain, October 7, 1780", which details the known patriot regiments and detachments that participated in the battle and the routes they took to get there.[2] [Note - the process of abstracting the information is ongoing as of 12 May 2023, the names in the following sections do come near the total yet. ]
For additional reading, see the References section of the WikiTree page "Overmountain Men and Their Descendants".
"We may never know – for certain – the names of each and every Patriot who truly participated in the Battle of Kings Mountain" says Lewis in the preface to his presentation.[3] For example, the table on page 37 of Lewis's presentation tallies 95 casualties[1] but that number appears to leave off some of the names Lewis includes later in the presentation. Other sources list fewer casualties. An online roster lists 46 killed, 1 mortally wounded, and 47 wounded (94 casualties),[4] and the plaque at King's Mountain names 28 killed, 4 mortally wounded, and 34 wounded (with an additional 25 unknowns - 1 killed and 24 wounded - for a total of 91), listed below.
