I am adding James Patterson (bef.1745-) to the study if that is okay

I've added my g-g-grandfather John Gill Patterson (abt.1812-1894) to the study - he was the first in the line to emigrate to Canada West (now Ontario), coming from the north of Ireland though, being Protestant, likely has Scottish roots.

I notice he's just the second Patterson in the ONS from Ontario though there are quite a few Paterson's and a couple Pattison's. My aunt (a Paterson who married a Patterson) tells me that Paterson is the Scottish spelling though I see quite a few Scots using the Patterson spelling too.

Gosh, it has been a long time since the last comment was posted on here! My mother was a Patterson and her male line goes back into the early colonial period then fades away

Anyhoo, I have been trying to trace the line where it begins to fade from my 5th great grandfather, James Patterson, to find out which of his Patterson ancestors was the first of his line to immigrate into the American Colonies.

James Patterson was born in 1738 in Accomack County, Virginia and died in that county in 1788.

The father of James was supposedly Anderson Patterson, born in Accomack County about 1708 and died there before 25 March 1760.

Now things get iffy: Anderson's father was supposedly one William Patterson who was born and died in Virginia Colony from 1670 to 1740. That is as far as I have been able to get...my "brick wall". Does anyone working on the Patterson family have any better information on the father of Anderson Patterson (William Patterson?) and any earlier generations as well as when they immigrated to the colonies? Also, from where did they immigrate...Scotland? Ireland? UK?

Also, is there a Patterson family website or group available on WikiTree or elsewhere which I may join to learn more about the Patterson ancestry? I am certainly going to contact Martha Soderberg about the Paterson lineage she has been tracing!!

Greetings, my maiden name is Patterson. I've been researching for the last 32 years. The first Patterson to come to America in my family line was Alexander Patterson, born Dec 25, 1705 in Scotland. I have not been able to find out who his parents were or where he was born. I have found two possibilities but have not been able to verify them yet. I'd love to join this group and share information. I traveled to Scotland in 2016 and went to the Scotlands People Center in Edinburgh, but didn't get to dig as I would've like to, and they didn't seem to have much on the Patterson/Patersone Clan. I did learn that the Patterson Clan lost their chief and were absorbed by the McClaren Clan.

Please sign me up! I've traced the Paterson name back to Adam Aslots de Coden de Patersone (1360-1386), with some fascinating ancestors along the way, especially through the wives! I'll try to enter some more names...

Hello! How do I become a part of this name study? My father was a Patterson.

The first Patterson in my tree is a great grandmother, Mary Ellen Patterson (Patterson-11564). She died long before I was born.

I hope we see more Patterson's on here soon.

My family lived in Philadelphia in the 1700 and 1800s and owned a seed and feed store on the southwest corner of 12th and Market St. My 4th GGF John Patterson, died in Philadelphia in 1808, at the age of 69, from pneumonia. His son, John Jr, who ran the business with him, also died in Philadelphia, in 1819, at age 40, from consumption.

Their son, my 2nd GGF Walter Augustin, and his older brother Hiram, ran the store, until about 1851, when he moved to Doylestown, PA and purchased the farm, that would later be purchased by W Atlas Burpee, who named it Fordhook Farm. He died there 13 years later at 46, in 1864.

His son, my GGF Walter Francis Sr, was born in Philadelphia in 1846, and worked as Chief Engineer of the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad in the early 1870's, before becoming a contractor, building bridges, mines, and tunnels. He was 72 when he died in the Pittsburgh area in 1919.

My GF Walter Francis Jr, was born in Philadelphia in 1874 and joined his father, as an engineer in the contracting business. They worked in Nova Scotia, Boston, PA, WV, KY, AL, OH, and IN. He passed away in Ohio in 1953, at 78.

My father's name was Patterson. Variations occurred from my grandfather (Patison) and great grandfather (Pattison). My grandfather was christened Patison but his 2 sisters were christened Patterson so he took their spelling.

Very confusing when researching...

My mothers Maiden name was Patterson.
