About the Project
The Peasley Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Peasley name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Peasley name.
As a One-Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Peasleys), by time period (18th Century Peasleys), or by topic (Peasley DNA, Peasley Occupations, Peasley Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches that have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Origins
- "Peasley, Peisley or Peaslee appear to be a variations of the Scottish surname Paisley, an important town in Renfrewshire, in southwester Scotland, near the River Clyde. George Paisley was a citizen of Ascot Parish, Oxfordshire about 1600, and his son Bartholomew, settling in Ireland was granted arms there."[1]
- "The name Peaslee is claimed by some to have sprung from Peter whence we have Peers, Pearse, and Pears. Others assume it was an offshoot of peas the legume. Peas were grown in the east from time immemorial and were introduced into Europe in the Middle Ages. Shakespeare spoke of "pease blossom". Lee is from lea, a pasture. the man who was the son of Mr. Peas perhaps lived on the lea and to distinguish him from the other Mr. Peas, he was called Peas-at-lea and finally Peaslee".[2]
- "One story attributes the name to a combination of the Pease and Lee family names following a marriage between members of the two families. Little significance can be attached to the spelling of the Peaslee name as far as delineating a particular branch of the family. Two of the most common uses are Peaslee and Peasley and are employed almost interchangeably throughout the records, although the early New England double "e" has been retained among families of that area. The "ley" ending seems to have been generally adopted by the families who moved westward".[3]

My theory is that the family spoke with a thick midlands accent and others, even from the locality interpreted the name in the way it sounded to them. Thomas's children including 'Jack' did use Piesley/ Peisley, this name stuck in Australia. Those of Thomas's children for whom registrations have been found were registered as Piesley. There's no birth record for Jack but his criminal record, execution and his death were registered as Peisley. Jack's siblings and their descendants continued to use Peisley but their cousins in England went by the name of Peasland.
