Problem Statement

On the 17th of June 1834, one Mr. Lemuel Beebe of New Lyme, Ashtabula, Ohio filed a Revolutionary War Pension claim for his service in that War. In his sworn deposition, filed with that claim, Lemuel Beebe declares that he was "aged Eighty Two" years of age as of the deposition date, thus he was born in 1752. Lemuel also states in the Q&A section of this deposition that he:

  • Was born in New London, Connecticut and lived there until 3 years after the close of the War.
  • Thence removed to Lyme, Connecticut where he remained until about five years prior to his pension deposition, when he moved to New Lyme, Ohio. That is to say Lemuel moved from Lyme, Connecticut to New Lyme, Ohio in summer of 1829.

This document, having its origin as a sworn deposition in the legal system, is as reliable a personal historical document as can possibly be found, so this information may be accepted as wholly reliable and correct. The next genealogical question, of course, is who was this Lemuel Beebe? This question is answered in at least two published genealogies, unfortunately the secondary genealogical literature provides two entirely plausible, but conflicting answers to this question. The first of the two accounts may be found in the 1991 Genealogy of the Family of Beebe, Vol I. by Clifford Beebe, [1] in which Clifford Beebe declares Lemuel Beebe, the Revolutionary War Veteran of New Lyme, Ohio, to have been the son of Theophilus and Mercy (Rogers) Beebe of Waterford, New London, Connecticut and that he was born in 1752, died about 1830, and was the father of at least two children, Ann M. and Mary C. The second account may be found in a 2011 Beebe Genealogy by Dr. Alan Henry which offers an alternative possible pedigree identity for Lemuel Beebe, being the son of Gideon and Ruth Clark Beebe who was also born in 1752 at New London, Connecticut (page 64). It should be noted that Dr. Henry does NOT assert this Lemuel Beebe identity to be the Lemuel Beebe, the Rev War Veteran of New Lyme, Ohio, however the asserted birth date and birth place of this Lemuel Beebe correlate perfectly with the information in the previously cited 1834 pension deposition. Furthermore, Henry's genealogy goes on to question (page 62) whether Theophilus Beebe ever had a son named Lemuel Beebe; that is to say Henry notes that genealogist Don Beebe, of Canada, had expressed that he (Don) was doubtful that the Lemuel Beebe whom was asserted to be the son of Theophilus (by Clifford Beebe) ever existed, implying that this parental link asserted by Clifford Beebe may have been a misguided and incorrect parental assignment of Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon. The balance of this essay then seeks to resolve this conflict by gathering the body of pertinent source information presently available online, and executing a critical examination those historical records in an attempt to differentiate the correct genealogical identity of Lemuel Beebe, the Revolutionary War soldier, who was born in New London, Connecticut in 1752, and died at New Lyme, Ohio.

Background

Noting that Dr. Alan Henry asserts that Don Beebe (and consequently Dr. Henry himself) had examined the genealogical record and they were left with doubts that Theophilus Beebe ever had a son named Lemuel Beebe; the first step in this study is to find whatever evidence may be available to establish whether or not the two plausible Lemuel Beebe identity candidates were, in fact, real people and actually existed.

First, consider Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon; there is, a wholly reliable, primary source record which absolutely affirms that he was a real person, that he was the son of Gideon Beebe, and that he was born about 1752 in New London Connecticut. This document is a January 16, 1767 New London Probate court record [2], available at Ancestry.com, in which "Mr. Zadock Darrow (1728-1827) is appointed Guardian to Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon Beebe deceased, on his choice. G. Saltonstall Judge." Thus, it may be established with absolute certainty that there was indeed a Lemuel Beebe, the son of Gideon Beebe, and that in 1767 he was found needing a guardian, that he was a minor of at least age 14 at the time of the guardianship probate, and that he was assigned the guardian of his choice in the probate court of New London, Connecticut. The general assumption that a minor assigned to guardian by the court was orphaned, appears to be incorrect in this case, as there are at least four guardianship probate records for Lemuel and his siblings between 1762 and 1767; furthermore both Beebe genealogies assert (without documentation) that Ruth (Clarke) Beebe. the wife of Gideon and probable mother of these children, was alive until 1784. This leads one to the deduction that guardianships were granted because Ruth did not have the means and/or ability to provide for the needs of her children, hence requiring court intervention.

Second, in a similar fashion, there is a 14 Nov 1801 Waterford, Connecticut probate record for the estate of Theophilus Beebe, [3] also presently available online at Ancestry.com, which grants an inheritance to Lemuel D Beebe, one of the heirs {of Theophilus Beebe}; two pieces of land. Thus, from this probate court record it may be ascertained, with certainty, that Theophilus Beebe did indeed have a son Lemuel, that this Lemuel D. Beebe was of Waterford, Connecticut, and was alive and well and at least 21 years of age in 1801. This document also identifies Lemuel's siblings as: Theophilus Beebe Jr., Rebekah Rogers, Hopestill Crandall, Patience Beebe, and Lucinda Wheelock; and implies, but does not confirm, his mother to be Mercy Beebe.

Therefore, the speculation by Don Beebe and Alan Henry suggesting that Lemuel Beebe, son of Theophilus, did not exist has been proven to be incorrect; however it is possible, even probable, as will be shown, that the Lemuel D. Beebe mentioned in the will of Theophilus Beebe Sr. is Lemuel Douglass Beebe, who in later life was identified as Douglas rather than Lemuel; thus producing a historical record devoid of an adult Lemuel Beebe, son of Theophilus.

Identity Analysis

As of Nov 2021, the date this essay was written, no source document has been found which unequivocally links Lemuel Beebe, the Revolutionary War Veteran of New Lyme, Ohio, to his parents; therefore indirect methods must be used to establish the identification of his parents. With the information previously cited in this essay it is known with absolute certainty that Lemuel Beebe, the Revolutionary War veteran:

  • Was born in New London, Connecticut in 1752, and lived there until 3 years after the close of the War. {The war officially ended September 3, 1783, which by Lemuel's words means that he was a resident of New London until about 1786; the Lyme, Connecticut census records corroborate this information as Lemuel Beebe is found enumerated in Lyme, Connecticut with a number of his brothers, in 1790}
  • Lemuel Beebe thence removed to Lyme, Connecticut where he remained until about five years prior to his 1834 pension deposition, at which time he removed to New Lyme, Ohio. That is to say Lemuel moved from Lyme, Connecticut to New Lyme, Ohio in the summer of 1829.

The cited probate records establish that both candidate identities, Lemuel, son Gideon, and Lemuel D., son of Theophilus, were born in New London, Connecticut. Here it should be noted that Waterford, Connecticut, the birthplace of Lemuel D., son of Theophilus, was actually and correctly recorded as New London, because his birthplace was included as part of New London, until the area was separated as an independent community called Waterford in 1801; therefore Lemuel D., son of Theophilus was indeed born in New London. The probate records also establish that Lemuel, son of Gideon, was born prior to 1753, and was assigned a guardian Zadock Darrow in 1767, as a juvenile. Likewise, it may be inferred from the probate of the estate of Theophilus Beebe that son Lemuel D., was an adult at that date hence prior to 1780. Therefore, the quest for the parental identity of Lemuel Beebe, the Rev War veteran, is caught in a bit of a genealogical quagmire as the two candidates share the same name, were born in the same municipality, and were born within 27 years (possibly even the same year) of each other, hence any Connecticut records delimited solely by the name Lemuel Beebe, in this time period, may plausibly be associated with either of the two candidate identities; however there are a few other distinguishing properties which may be gleaned from the probate records to assist in differentiating the candidate identities:

Lemuel, son of Gideon:
  • Would associate and be associated with the children of Gideon Beebe, so who were his siblings?
  • Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon, would have lived or at least been closely associated with the household of Zadock Darrow, of New London, from the age 14 to age 21, thus any source reference associating Lemuel with Zadack Darrow or more generally, the Darrow surname, would favor source identification to be for Lemuel, son of Gideon.
Lemuel D., son of Theophilus:
  • Would associate and be associated with the children of Theophilus Beebe and those siblings are absolutely identified as: Theophilus Beebe Jr., Rebekah Rogers, Hopestill Crandall, Patience Beebe, and Lucinda Wheelock in their father's will; it is also possible that Douglas Beebe was a sibling.
  • His mother was probably Ruth Beebe.
  • Any Lemuel Beebe records associated specifically with Waterford, Conn. probably belong to Lemuel, the son of Theophilus.

Lemuel D. Beebe, Son of Theophilus

As of Nov 2021, there is one known primary information source and two secondary information sources which identify the children of Theophilus Beebe Sr. The most reliable source for this information is the Last Will and Testament of Theophilus Beebe Sr. which identifies the following children for Theophilus Beebe:

  1. Lemuel D. Beebe
  2. Theophilus Beebe Jr.
  3. Rebekah (Beebe) Rogers,
  4. Hopestill (Beebe) Crandall,
  5. Patience (Beebe), and
  6. Lucinda (Beebe) Wheelock

Of particular interest is the fact that Theophilus does NOT name a son Douglass in his will even though both Beebe Genealogies by Dr. Alan Henry and Clifford Beebe have modified Theophilus' list of heirs to include a son Douglas, and Henry also adds a daughter Ruth, wife of Phineas Rogers (which appears to be a conflation with daughter Rebecca who is identified as Rebecca (Beebe) Rogers in the will of Theophilus) to the list of heirs in the Will of Theophilus:

  1. ) Douglass Beebe
  2. ) Ruth Beebe

The tombstone inscription of Mercy (Rogers) Beebe provides another primary source of reliable vital information for the life and family of Lemuel D. Beebe; this inscription states, "In memory of Mercy Beebe relict of Theophilus Beebe who died Aug. 7, 1835; aged 95 years." A quick calculation reveals that Mercy (Rogers) Beebe, was born in 1740. This, of course is incompatible with the 1752 birth date identified by Lemuel Beebe the Revolutionary War Veteran of the New Lyme, Ohio in his pension application, simply because Mercy would have only been 12 years of age at this date and therefore far too young to be his mother. Thus, it may be known from this tombstone data that Mercy (Rogers) Beebe could not be the mother of Lemuel Beebe the Rev. War veteran. It also constrains the birth of the Lemuel D. Beebe, cited as an heir in the Will of her husband Theophilus, to have been born sometime after 1760, if he was indeed her son, and as no evidence whatsoever has been found to indicate that Theophilus Beebe Sr. was married prior his marriage to Mercy, the logical deduction is that Lemuel D. Beebe is, in all likelihood, the son of both Theophilus and Mercy (Rogers) Beebe and therefore, Lemuel D. Beebe, son of Theophilus, is exceedingly unlikely be Lemuel Beebe, the Revolutionary War Veteran of New Lyme Ohio.

The only primary or published secondary sources which assign a 1752 date of birth for Lemuel D. Beebe, son of Theophilus are the Beebe Genealogies authored by Clifford Beebe, in 1991, and Dr. Alan Henry in 2011. Dr. Alan Henry observes that the cited 1752 date of birth does not work for Lemuel to be the son of Mercy (Rogers) Beebe and consequently, along with Don Beebe, expresses doubt Lemuel, son of Theophilus even exists. It would appear that Clifford Beebe incorrectly jumped to the conclusion that Lemuel D. Beebe, son of Theophilus was also Lemuel Beebe the Revolutionary War Veteran born in 1752, and consequently appropriated the 1752 date of birth from the Rev War Pension application of Lemuel Beebe and arbitrarily assigned it to Lemuel D. Beebe, son of Theophilus, but with NO evidence to substantiate this assertion. Dr. Alan Henry's Genealogy then copies this error, but cautions his readers that something is wrong with the data. Therefore, the error in Clifford Beebe's genealogy narrative is that Lemuel D. Beebe was born in 1752, whereas the best available evidence indicates his birth occurred sometime (perhaps well) after 1760.

There is one other primary source to examine for information regarding Lemuel D. Beebe, son of Theophilus, and that is the census record. The first of these is the 1790 New London census record for the Theophilus Beebe {Sr.} household. This census enumerates three males in the household, two of them are over the age of 16, and one of these is obviously Theophilus Sr.; and the third male is under the age of 16. Therefore, one may deduce it to be highly probable that two of the sons of Theophilus, were living in his household in 1790 and one of them was under the age of 16. One of these sons was born circa 1775 or later and the other son was born before that date. It may also be noted that the 1790 census enumerates independent, and nearby households for Phineas Rogers, Phineas Crandall, and Jabez Beebe, the husbands for three of his four daughters. However, the 1790 census does not enumerate an independent household for Lemuel D., nor Theophilus Jr, the only two living sons of Theophilus identified in his 1801 probate record. The most probable explanation for this data is that Lemuel D. and Theophilus Jr. were the two sons enumerated as living with their father in the 1790 census. In 1800, the New London Census now includes a household for a Theophilus Beebe age 26-44, and this household has a female aged 45+ years, suggesting that by this date, Theophilus Beebe Sr. was deceased, and Theophilus Beebe Jr. was now the head of house and his mother was living with him. Thus, the 1800 census sets the birth date for Theophilus Jr. between 1756 and 1774; the 1830 New London census further constrains the birth date for Theophilus Beebe Jr to between 1771 and 1780; therefore Theophilus Beebe Jr. was born between 1771 and 1774, and consequently was the older of the two sons in the 1790 census; which then, by elimination, means that Lemuel D. Beebe is then the younger son and could have been born no earlier than 1775 (from the 1790 census data) nor later than 1780 based on being the age of majority by the 1801 probate distribution of his father's estate. Now consider the data in the 1810 and 1820 New London census records, for Douglas Beebe, the 1810 census establishes that Douglas Beebe was born between 1766 and 1784; and the 1820 census sets his birthdate to between 1776 and 1794, therefore Douglass Beebe was born between 1776 and 1784; an age range that coincides exceedingly well with the 1775 to 1780 birth date range for Lemuel D. Beebe established previously in this paragraph. This is powerful circumstantial evidence supporting the idea that Lemuel D. Beebe and Douglass Beebe were one and the same person and that he was born about 1778 and when coupled with the fact the Theophilus Beebe Sr has two and only two sons in both the 1790 census and his estate probate; the case that Lemuel D. Beebe and Douglas Beebe are one and the same person, born between 1776 and 1780 is nearly certain.

Now, synthesizing a pedigree hypothesis able to fit all of the known and reliable information gathered on Lemuel D. Beebe, son of Theophilus; it seems highly probable that Lemuel D. Beebe and Douglas Beebe were one and the same person, i.e. Lemuel Douglas Beebe, was the son of Theophilus and Mercy (Rogers) Beebe and he was born about 1778. This hypothesis fits all known data:

  • Lemuel Douglas Beebe is an heir and son to Theophilus Sr. and is included in the 1801 distribution of father's intestate estate. [3]
  • His mother is Mercy Rogers who was born in 1740 in accordance with her tombstone inscription; this constraint puts Lemuel Douglas Beebe's birth sometime after 1760. This birth date range fits with the census and probate constraints and eliminates him as the Rev War veteran of New Lyme, Ohio. [4]
  • Lemuel Douglas Beebe is the younger son in the 1790 New London household of Theophilus Beebe Sr, born after 1776. (deduced). [5]
  • Lemuel Douglas Beebe has a son son named Lemuel H. Beebe
  • Lemuel Douglas Beebe has a son named Douglas Beebe
  • His sister, Rebecc a (Beebe) Rogers, names one of her sons Lemuel Douglas Rogers James Rogers of New London, Ct., and his descendants; page 174; presumably to honor her brother.
  • 1810 Waterford, Connecticut census for Douglas Beebe, age 26-44, (born 1766-1784) [6]
  • 1820 Waterford, Connecticut Census; Douglass Beebe age 26-44. (born 1776-1794). [7]

As an interesting side note, the 1790 and 1800 census records place Zadock Darrow, the pastor of the Waterford Seventh Day Baptist church, and guardian of Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon, as well as Joseph Levett, the assigned guardian of Amon Beebe, the brother of Lemuel, were both living in the midst of Theophilus Beebe and family at the Waterford enclave. Thus it may be inferred that Gideon and his family (including Lemuel) were living in close physical association the "Beebe" cluster located at Waterford Connecticut near the Waterford Seventh Day Baptist Church, and all doubtless fully entrenched in the Rogers/Beebe Baptist church of that community. This is significant in that prior to the departure of Lemuel, son of Gideon to Lyme in 1786; Lemuel, son of Gideon, and Lemuel D., son of Theophilus would have lived together in common extended family, church, and social structure and doubtless this overlay would have been a source of name ambiguity and confusion for the two Lemuels in their daily life. This ambiguity may have been a contributing factor for the name identification of Lemuel, son of Theophilus as Lemuel D. (in his will) or later simply as Douglas in order to differentiate him from Lemuel Beebe, the son of Gideon.

Lemuel, Son of Gideon

The following section will examine the genealogical records correlated to Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon, in order to determine the extent to which the historical evidence supports the assertion that Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon was the Revolutionary War Veteran of New Lyme, Ohio. As noted earlier in this essay, no documentation has been found to directly link the child Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon, identified in the 1767 New London Guardianship hearing, to Lemuel Beebe, the New Lyme Ohio veteran. Hence indirect methods must be used to establish a potential connection between these juvenile and adult identities. Lemuel Beebe, the Rev War Veteran states in his pension application deposition that he removed from New London to Lyme, Connecticut around 1786 and remained there until the summer of 1829, whence he then moved to New Lyme, Ohio. Therefore, best opportunity to make an intermediate indirect connection between the juvenile Lemuel, of New London, and the Sr. Adult Lemuel of New Lyme, Ohio is to establish and trace Lemuel's family connections in the move from New London, to Lyme Connecticut.

The first step in this process is to identify each of the siblings of Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon. There are several primary records linking Gideon Beebe Sr., the father of Lemuel, to his children; the first of these is Gideon Beebe's last will and testament, unfortunately he only names his son, Clark, and wife, Ruth, in this document. However, Gideon died young and there are at least four New London guardianship records appointing guardians to a number his minor children specifically identified in these records as the children of Gideon Beebe. These records would generally be taken to suggest that his wife Ruth may have died shortly after his death, leaving their children as orphans, but as noted earlier, this is probably not be the case. The list of Gideon's children identified as such in the New London probate records is as follows:

  1. ) Clark Beebe; appointed executor of the 7 May 1759 will of his father Gideon Beebe [8]
  2. ) Phebe Beebe, daughter of Gideon; chooses Mr. Benjamin Gorton as Guardian in a 2 Nov 1762 probate court hearing, about 14 years of age.
  3. ) Amon Beebe, son of Gideon; chooses Mr. Joseph Lovett as Guardian in 2 Nov 1762 probate court hearing. Note that Joseph and Eleanor Lovett are also connected to the family as co-signers of Gideon's will,
  4. ) Christopher Beebe, son of Gideon; chooses Mr. William Manwaring as Guardian at a 13 January 1763 New London, Conn. probate court hearing. The selection of his guardian was granted by his choice affirming Christopher to have been a minor of at least age 14.
  5. ) Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon; Zadock Darrow appointed guardian on January 16, 1767.

Therefore, the presence of any of these siblings, or of their guardians living in close proximity to Lemuel at Lyme, Connecticut, provides substantiation that Lemuel, son of Gideon of New London, and Lemuel Beebe, of Lyme, Connecticut were the same person.

The Beebe Genealogies of Clifford Beebe and Dr. Alan Henry are the only other known, published sources identifying a list of the children for Gideon and Ruth (Clarke) Beebe and these genealogies name the following additional Children:

  1. ) Samuel Beebe;
  2. ) Timothy Beebe;
  3. ) Gideon Beebe Jr.;
  4. ) Ruth Beebe; married ____ Smith, possibly the guardian of brother Nathan.
  5. ) Anne Beebe; wife of Sameul Hewitt of Stonington, Conn.
  6. ) Nathan Beebe; asserted by Dr. Henry to have been assigned Capt. Simeon Smith as guardian, however this record was not found in the New London probate record document (at Ancestry.com) as for the siblings above.
  7. ) Abigail Beebe; asserted by Dr. Henry to have chosen her mother as guardian, however this record was not found in the Ancestry.com New London probate record document as was the case for the guardianships of the siblings cited above.

Dr. Alan Henry cites the Parkhurst Manuscript on microfilm at the NEHGS, Boston, MA, pp.156-157 as his source of part of his information narrative; whereas Clifford Beebe offers no information source citation for his asserted list of children. The question then becomes how did Clifford Beebe and Dr. Alan Henry identify this later list to be named among the children of Gideon and Ruth Beebe? There are a number of possible answers to this question, one may be that Clarence Beebe had identified them in his 1928 revision to his "Monograph of the Descendants of the Family of Beebe" on which Clifford relied heavily for his genealogy, or perhaps an uncited family history or descendants, or it may be that Clifford and Dr. Henry used adjacency from the census records to establish this list. Timothy, Clark, and James Bogue were living near to Lemuel in the 1790 NL census. If indeed brothers Samuel, Timothy, and Gideon Jr. were included in the list of siblings because of census records, then using these family connections to substantiate Lemuel of Lyme and Lemuel of New London, Conn. is a circular argument and is not valid.

Lemuel Beebe is enumerated in the 1790 New London census record and again in the 1800 Lyme Connecticut census in full accordance with the pension application deposition of Lemuel Beebe of New Lyme, Ohio, and this correlation to the pension deposition provides a very high probability these records are for the said Lemuel. The 1790 New London census enumerates two clusters of enclaves of individuals associated with Lemuel Beebe. The first of these occur around page 50-51 of the census and this grouping includes Lemuel Beebe, living in very near physical proximity to Clark Beebe, proven to be a brother of Lemuel by probate records, and this cements that case that the Lemuel Beebe of this 1790 census record, was indeed the son of Gideon. In addition to Clark Beebe, James Bogue Jr. the father of Lemuel's future son-in-laws, Ancel and Shubael, is enumerated on the same 1790 census page, and this data establishes an early connection between the families. However this is only the beginning because in the 1800 Lyme, Connecticut census, James Bogue Jr. is once again found enumerated close to Lemuel Beebe and by extension, it may be deduced that the Lemuel Beebe and James Bogue Jr. of 1800 in Lyme and 1790 in New London were the same persons, thereby providing additional circumstantial evidence that Lemuel Beebe of Lyme was the son of Gideon. In addition to James Bogue Jr., the 1800 Lyme, Connecticut census shows Lemuel Beebe to be enumerated near to Gideon Beebe {Jr.}, Timothy Beebe, and Nathan Beebe, each asserted to sons of Gideon Beebe Sr., in the Clifford Beebe and Alan Henry Genealogies, thus providing further circumstantial evidence that the Lemuel Beebe in the 1800 Lyme census (and thereto of New Lyme, Ohio) was indeed the son of Gideon.

Summary and Conclusion

Therefore, based on a deep dive into the existing primary records, it may be ascertained on two counts, and with a high degree of certainty that Lemuel Beebe, the Revolutionary War Veteran at New Lyme, Ohio, was the son of Gideon Beebe Sr. of New London, Connecticut. The first of these counts is that the primary records for Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon, are fully compatible with and supporting of the personal history of Lemuel Beebe, Rev War veteran as declared in his 1834 pension deposition. The second count is that the primary records for Lemuel Douglas Beebe, son of Theophilus, the person identified, but clearly conflated by the Clifford Beebe Genealogy as the New Lyme Rev War Veteran;, reveal, with a high degree of certainty, that Lemuel Douglas Beebe was born circa 1778, 25 years after the 1752 birth of the Rev War Veteran and therefore clearly NOT viable as a candidate to be the New Lyme, OH Lemuel Beebe.

Census Records

The following 1790 New London census record could apply to Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon, or Lemuel Beebe, son of Theophilus; however the enumeration of Lemuel, Clark, and Timothy Beebe all in close physical is a powerful affirmation that this census record was for Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon. In addition the close physical location of the James Bogue Sr and Jr. families to Lemuel in this census establishes the origins of the connection between the families of Lemuel Beebe and James Bogue Jr. which endured with common migrations to Lyme, Connecticut and New Lyme, Ohio, as well as subsequent intermarriage between the families.

  4. ) New London Probate Records; image 433 of 1284; New London Probate court January 16, 1767: "Mr. Zadock Darrow (1728-1827) is appointed Guardian to Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon Beebe deceased, on his choice." G. Saltonstall Judge. To Clerk Probater for NL district. {(RRB) It is known from the Will of Gideon Beebe Sr., that Gideon Beebe, father of Lemuel, passed away around Dec 1759. This guardianship record establishes that Lemuel Beebe, son of Gideon Beebe, was placed under the guardianship care of Rev. Zadock Darrow on 16 Jan 1767; that is to say his mother, Ruth (Clarke) Beebe was unable to continue to provide for him. This may be because she had died, but that is inconsistent with the records. At least three, possibly four of his siblings had been assigned guardians prior his hearing in 1767, so if his mother had died who provided his care between 1760 and 1767? A model far more consistent with the historical record is that Ruth (Clarke) Beebe did not have the means or ability (partially disabled?) to care for her large family by herself, and it appears she held the family together until the children were at least fourteen years of age; this would have allowed the children to make their choice of guardian in court and also would have made them more desirable to guardian as, at age 14, their ability to provide household labor would almost certainly more than offset the cost of care for the household of the assignee. Hence because son, Lemuel Beebe, was the last of the children to be assigned a guardian in 1767, some four plus years after the guardianship assignment of his sister Phebe, and as he was granted the option to select his guardian, this guardianship record affirms that he was at least fourteen years of age on this date (i.e. born prior to Jan 1753), and suggests that he was the youngest child in the family.}

    1. ) Page 58. Personal data: Gideon Beebe (209) was born 4 Dec 1713 at New London Connecticut, and he died 7 May 1759, also at New London. He was 46 years of age at his death. Gideon Beebe lived in New London, Connecticut. He received land, which bordered on the Nihantic River and New London, from his father Samuel.
      1. ) Marriage. Gideon married Ruth Clark, 25 November 1735 at Westerly RI. The parents of Ruth Clark are unknown; she was born 15 July 1708 at Charlestown, RI. Her date of death is unknown, but she is known to be living in New London in 1784. {Editorial source of this information is uncited and unknown}
      2. ) Children. Gideon and Ruth were the parents of Clark (539), Timothy (540), Gideon (541), Ruth (542), Anne (543), Samuel (544), Nathan (545), Abigail (546), Christopher (547), Amon (548), and Lemuel (549).
        1. ) Page 133: Lemuel Beebe (549) son of Gideon Beebe, was born about 1752. There is a New London, Conn. land deed record dated 12 Oct 1773 in which Lemuel Beebe sell his share of the inheritance from his father to Zadock Darrow. {(RRB:) Note that Zadock Darrow was the individual who was assigned guardianship of Lemuel in 1767. [2] Assuming Lemuel was born in 1752 as asserted, then he would have turned age 21 in 1773 thus enabling him to receive and sell his inheritance.}
  1. ) Dr. Alan Henry account of Lemuel Beebe, son of Theophilus:
    1. ) The Family of Beebe; page 61, 62: Theophilus Beebe Sr. (192. ), son of Samuel Beebe (74.) was born 31 Jan 1731 at New London, Connecticut, and he died in 1801 at New London, Connecticut. Resident of Plum Island, Suffolk, NY. Is said to be deceased when his daughter Patience m. Jabez Beebe 16 June 1799. He had deeds of land on Plum Island. Probably at the time of the Groton Massacre in 1780, he was placed in a boat and set afloat. He made for Plum Island and landed there. He traded for land in Waterford, CT which was under litigation for a long time. His wife Mercy is buried in Waterford, CT. He married Mercy Rogers, b. ABT 1735,25 d. 7 Aug 1835,25 buried in Waterford, New London, Connecticut. Mercy: Don Beebe shows her birth as 1740 which is incorrect or there is an error in dates of the the eldest two children. {Editorial Comment: Dr. Henry is correct, the birthdates for sons Lemuel D. and Theophilus are incorrect as shown elsewhere in this essay.}
      1. ) Children of Theophilus and Mercy (Rogers) Beebe:
        1. ) Lemuel D. Beebe; b. ABT 1752 in New London, New London, Connecticut,25 d. ABT 1830 in New Lyme, Erie, Ohio. Don Beebe of Calgary, Canada questions whether this child might be the child of Gideon and Ruth (Clark) Beebe! {This essay demonstates the best explanation (with supporting evidence) is that Lemuel D. Beebe was one and the same person as Douglas Beebe and he was born circa 1772.}
        2. ) Theophilus Beebe Jr. (495.); b. 20 Feb 1753. {This 1753 date of birth cited by Henry for Theophilus Beebe Jr. appears to have been lifted from the Clifford Beebe Genealogy andis almost certainly incorrect, analysis of census and death records indicates his birth should be about 1773.}
        3. ) Rebecca Beebe (496.) b. 16 Jun 1763.
        4. ) Patience Beebe b. 1765 in New London, Connecticut; d. 23 Apr 1842 in Waterford, New London, Connecticut; and buried in the Old Rogers Cem. at Waterford, New London, Connecticut. Patience m. (2) Ephraim Rogers, son of Jonathan & Hannah (Hiscox) Rogers and (3) Ebenezer Maynard as his third wife. She married (1) Jabez Beebe Sr., 16 Jun 1799 in New London, New London, Connecticut,8 b. 18 Sep 1729 in New London, New London, Connecticut, (son of William Beebe Jr. and Jerusha Rogers), d. 30 May 1814 in Waterford, Connecticut, buried Old Rogers Cem in Waterford, New London, Connecticut. Jabez: Jabez and Eunice were second cousins. Patience is a second cousin once removed. Jabez served in the Revolutionary War. His tombstone says he died 6 May 1814. His will dated 18 Mar 1806 mentions his wife Patience and sons Jabez and Paul, William and daughter Jerusha Rathbun. Blodgett says there is no reference to son William which is NOT correct. She married (2) Ephraim Rogers, 2 Jan 1817 in Waterford, New London, Connecticut, b. ABT 1765.
        5. ) Hopestill Beebe (497.); b. 1765.
        6. ) Douglass Beebe Sr. (498.); b. 1772. {RRB: This essay demonstrates that it is exceedingly probable that Lemuel D. Beebe and Douglass Beebe were one and the same person.}
        7. ) Lucinda Beebe b. ABT 1781. She married Marvel Wheelock.
        8. ) Ruth Beebe (499.) {RRB: Ruth does not appear in the will of Theophilus, therefore either deceased prior to Theophilus, or not a child of Theophilus.}
