Disguised Family

Peel Family ?

Is this Peel family really a Pelan family ?

In 1901, David Peel, 33, was living in house 97 in Lindsay Street (Windsor Ward, Antrim) along with his wife Maggie Peel, 29. Their daughter, Ellen Peel, 4, was also living with them. Also living with them were Ellen Peel, 31, Cousin, James Peel, 70, Father, and Margaret Deyermond (widow), 44, Sister. [7]

The suspicion arises because a Margaret Pelan married a James Deyermond in 1876 and there are no apparent Peel / Deyermond marriages. The age is approximately correct.

If Margaret Deyermond is truly 44 in 1901 (and 55 in 1901) - her birthdate is circa 1857 and her marriage should be post 1865. A date of 1876 would be reasonable and the bride's age is listed as 21 => 1855 birthdate.

However, there is a death certificate for a Margaret Deyermond [8] where she died in presence of an Annie Peel and it says that she was a widow of Alexander Deyermond, a labourer. Although the husband was called James Alexander and was a labourer so this still could be the same person.

The death was at 79 Utility Street - which the street directory confirms is a Peel address. So what is going on here? The marriage witness William Pelan signed his name as Pelan.

The child Ellen Peel was born in Dublin. Her father is David and David's father was Christopher Peel so Margaret cannot be a full sister. David's wife was a widow Margaretta Watson née Hull.

This needs some further investigating.

Toome Pelans

There are plenty of accounts of the Pelan's around Toome, "Pelan's Hotel", the O'Neill Arms Hotel etc. but biographical detail is thin on the ground and so good evidence connecting them is lacking.

Here are some snippets to be moved to profiles later:

  • 1838 - William Pelan, Toome reporting bird species for Natural History Society[9].
  • Death of Robert Pelan of the O'Neill Arms Hotel, Toome in 36th year, 19 January 1859[10].

It seems plausible to suggest that Robert Pelan of New Orleans connection is the person that died in 1859 - circumstances seem to fit, although the son called him a coach-maker (1874) and didn't mention he was deceased. It also raises the possibility that Pelan-107 is not the son, despite the obvious connections.

Will calendars @ PRONI state that "Letters of Administration of the Personal estate of Robert Pelan late of Toome Bridge in the County of Antrim Innkeeper deceased who died 19 January 1859 at same place were granted at Belfast to James Alexander Toome Bridge aforesaid Curator of the Minor Children of said deceased during their minority."

  • 1877 - Application for transfer of license from James Alexander to William Pelan (of Toome Bridge, Duneane Parish) [11].

There was a court case where one of the children sued James Alexander for funds that had been denied them, income from the Hotel.

  • 1878 - Action to recover mesne rates and profits - William Pelan v James Alexander - states that " Lord O'Neill leased the hotel and land to William Pelan, whose son, Robert Pelan, died in 1859, leaving a widow and children, of who plaintiff is one" [12]. Plaintiff came of age in 1874/1875.
  • 1879 -William Pelan of Toome, hotel proprietor and farmer, bankruptcy [13]
  • 1880 - William Pelan, of Toomebridge, Innkeekper - Bankrupt [14].
  • 1880 - Transfer of spirit licence from William Pelan to James Alexander[15].
  • 1891 - O'Neill Arms Hotel - For Sale (James Alexander deceased) [16].

James Alexander, 63, of Ballymena, died in 1891.[17]. Mary J Pelan (cousin) was in attendance.
