Biography
Peter, son of John Martin Coss and Martha Schell, was born 17 May 1808 in Sharon, Schoharie, New York.[1]
Apparently Peter's father, in his declining years, was perturbed at his youngest son, Peter, and wanted to change his will that originally left his property to Peter. In a deposition of Peter Hynds as a witness to the last will and testament of John M Coss, then deceased, it was said:
- "... I think he [John Martin Coss] was declining in body and mind for 10 or 15 years before his death...He never spoke to me to make a will till he came into the store for that purpose and wanted to have one made. He had burned up one will and said he would never make another, should judge that this was 5 years back...He said that his son Peter had gone and got bees and placed them so near the house that they would sting him. That Peter would not obey him. He had willed him his property and then he burned up his will. I have heard him say this more than once. Peter lived near him in a separate house. Had a separate family...Testator complained of other things in which Peter had been disobedient. Peter had not lived with him long, not many years if a year. Thinks Peter was there when the will was burned, and was there when testator told him he had burned the will."[2]
Sometime after 1845, the Coss family moved to a farm in Harmony Township, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.[3][4]
By 1870, Peter and his wife were farming in North Star, Gratiot, Michigan. For a period of time, their daughter Mary Brazee and her children lived with them. [5][6]
