Johann Cesar VI Godeffroy of Hamburg built a fleet of trading ships that, at its peak, numbered 29 deep water sailing vessels and some 100 smaller ships. Among these ships was the barque Peter Godeffroy.[1] Built in 1856-57 and delivered to the shipping company of Johann Godeffroy & Sohn on 17-4-1857, the Peter Godeffroy (II) had a length of 127.5 feet, a beam of 26 feet, and a height of 15.4 feet from keelson to the deck. It displaced 175 Commerz Lasten equal to 522 tons [2]
Johann Ceasar Godeffroy & Sohn started carrying passengers in 1844 and, following the gold rushes to California and Australia, they set up a regular passenger service to Port Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, as well as Valparaiso and San Francisco. Pride of this fleet was the 1050 ton (352 Commerz Lasten) full rigged ship, Peter Godeffroy which, in 1849, was commissioned to be built, especially for the emigrant trade at Weilbach's Stockholm shipyard, its first voyage in 1851 being anticipated in Adelaide's German newspapers under
