9 Hope Place was the family home beginning with Thomas Hale by at least 1830 (as recorded in the Bristol Poll Book). It appears from early maps that Hope Place was a short alley running west to east with 7 tenements on either side. There were stairs entering the alley from the west, with tenements 1 through 7 on the right (south) and numbers 14 through 8 (numbering from west to east) on the left (north). Another set of steps were between number 10 and number 9, just before the Hale's residence. and another set of stairs running west to east, Number 9 was on the north side of the road, and was the second from the east end.
