Introduction

According to William H. Ream, Jr. there are at least four stories as to who Philip Ream's parents were. [1]

Parentage Story Number 1

Philip's father was one of seven immigrant [to the US] brothers (and one sister) who originally spelled their name "Rheam." They dropped the "h" so that their descendants would know they were descended from these brothers. It is also said that by dropping the "h" they were left out of a large inheritance presumably because they could not be traced.

Parentage Story Number 2

A biography of Philip's son Abraham Ream, which is included in The History of Hardin County Ohio, states the following: His grandfather, George Ream, was in the Revolutionary War under Gen. Washington; he was also one of a number sent to quell Shay's Whiskey Rebellion.[2]

This is the most widely accepted version. However, three early Ream researchers were unable to substantiate this story. They were the late Chester Sterling, the late Verda Pifer, and the late Donald Leon Ream.

Parentage Story Number 3

This story is that Christopher Ream and Maria Catherine Becker were his parents. They were married in eastern Pennsylvania and their second child was John Philip Ream, born 22 June 1761 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. In the 1850 Census for Stark County, Ohio, Philip's age looked to some researchers as "89," but is clearly "82." Family lore does say he was born closer to 1767.

Parentage Story Number 4

This story name Nicholas Ream as the father. This individual is likely Nicholas Ream and his wife Margaret Weidman. A descendant of Abraham Ream (Philip's brother) found a church baptismal record of Adam Henry Ream (another brother) giving his parent's names as Johannes Nicholas Ream and Margareta Ream.

I'm not sure this free space is needed any longer. The first two John Phillips (Ream-132 and Ream-369) have been merged with Ream-13. I do believe Ream-13 belongs as the child of Nicholas Ream-366 and wife Margaret Weidtman-3 because they were living in Westmoreland, PA as were the Altman family when J. Philip Ream-13 married A. Maria Altman-63.

John Philip Riehm-140 was baptized 20 Aug 1760 in Lancaster; Muddy Creek Church records: John Philip s/o Andrew Riehm - sp: Jacob & Christine Riehm

John Philip Riem (Ream-666) was baptized 22 Jun 1761 Lancaster; First Reformed records: s/o Christopher Riem & Catherine (Becker). Other children: Henry, George, Michael, William, John. Christopher, the father, was probably the Christopher naturalized in 1761 in Lancaster.
